WHAT TO EXPECT

This experience is designed to make you time-travel back to the early ages of photography. Youll have your portrait made through one of the oldest photography processes, invented by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851: wet plate collodion and will have the chance to experience the whole process of development. This immersive experience will be held at FIVE HISTORIC PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO, which itself is equipped with antique cameras, and furniture, alongside some literature on 19th century Photography, all for your edification.

This particular technique creates unique images, reminiscent of a distant past. You will have the chance to choose from three different sizes in which the tintype portrait will be made.

Some 19th century clothes and props will be available for the portrait session.

In addition to being an extremely interesting process, you will have the opportunity to follow the hosts to the laboratory/dark-room to experience/see the whole development process.

The aluminium plates (tintypes) are ready to take, one hour after the experience starts.

1: Fonte da Sabuga

It was built in the 18th century. People use to come to this fountain to fill their bottles by draining natural water and humidity from the top of the mountain. It is the largest source we have in Sintra.

Ordered to be built by António Augusto Monteiro and commissioned to the Italian Luigi Manini. This is where the famous Initiatory Well is located, with an unparalleled mystique along with the resulting tunnels and lakes.

Built in the last half of the XIX century by José Luís Monteiro inspired by different styles, such as that of Luigi Manini and among others, by order of the Biester family.

On this whole-day adrenaline-pumping journey. Weve been exploring this crazy beautiful and mysterious mountain landscape since we could slip past mums watchful eyes. So trust us that to really know Sintra you have to go beyond the walls of its many palaces. That said, it would be rude to drive past the UNESCO World Heritage town and not share a saucy story or two before we dive into the forest.
From untouched lakes to ancient hilltop convents, well pull up at the coolest hidden gems and chase non-stop adventure in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. In summer, feel the breeze whip your hair as we crawl and bounce along dirt tracks with the roof off. In the cooler months we keep the roof on, turn the music up (real loud) and splash through puddles of mud as we swerve past house-sized boulders, pine forests and giant ferns.
After a damn good lunch at a cheap-and-cheerful village restaurant well direct our 4×4 chariot for the coastline. Feel the sand beneath your feet and dive into the cool, salty sea (if you dare). Our secret beach is surrounded by incredible soaring cliffs. Before the day wraps up, well head for the edge of the earth (or at least Europe) and snap a Polaroid memory.

In 1866 Hans Christian Andersen traveled to Portugal. After a few months in Lisbon and Setúbal, I've got Sintra. How was Sintra at the time and what did the danish writer see here? Where did you walk by and what were your impressions?

What did the peasants and the high society believe in the Moorish Castle then? And what happened here for Andersen to jump like a little faun full of joy?

All of this and much more will be transmitted to you by the Historian Miguel Boim, who studied the memories of Andersen in Sintra, as well as Sintra in the 19th century.

You will start your walking tour in Sintra's Historic Center and from there you will pass through a number of places - in the Village and around it - where Hans Christian Andersen also walked, as well as important spots, untraceable nowadays due to the man-made development that followed Andersen's time in Sintra.

The walking tour will have a duration of around 3h30 (regular terrain) and the effort implied is equivalent to spending the whole afternoon strolling around touristic areas, with its ups and downs.

We will start our tour with a pick up at Sintra train Station and proceed to visit a ruined medieval village at the gates of the Moorish castle, there, we will see the remains of an archaeological excavation where i worked back in 2012 and is now an open air museum with old structures, graves popping off the ground and a museum with a lot of artifacts we found there.

2: Santuario da Peninha

The seccond place we will visit lies in the middle of the Sintra forest where an old chapel lies on a top of a hill, this chapel is known as an old pilgrimage spot where a miracle happened. Another ruined building is also seen on this barren hill top, this ruined church has its foundations on the foundation of Portugal itself. Our journey will continue to this more place of the hill, away from the crowds and mostly known only by locals. For me one of the best views of all the Lisbon bay area.

3: Penedo de Adrenunes

The last place we will visit will be a curious one. After a 15 minute walk deep down in the Sintra Forest, another hill top facing the westernmost point of continental europe can be visited. The place called Penedo de Adrenunes, gives us the Stonehenge vibes. Despite archaeological artifacts never been found here, it is believed that this place was used by our ancestors 5000 years ago.

1: Sintra National Palace

Here you will see the National Palace of Sintra - seen only from the outside without entrance - and you will know some of its characteristics, especially those that are no longer in sight and which made it one of the great manor houses of Europe in the years 1500 In addition, you will also hear about human beings from the past who, in addition to feeling the cold, the warmth, the love and the hating that we feel these days, have left their name engraved on history for more than 500 years. And throughout the night the words of these will surprise you - to your mind and heart - in the memories of times already lost.

2: Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais

Along our climb up the mountain (the total effort will be very similar to spend an entire afternoon strolling in and around Sintra) there will be stop-points in which - besides resting - you will see the night landscape around you and , more than that, will be, through my words, surprised by the accounts that were written in history and that will make you feel the way people in the past felt the most mystical places: apparitions of religious chronicles, visions in dreams consummated in reality , buried treasure beliefs, and blinding rays falling from the sky. All this comes from my research work on the Local History of Sintra, with special focus on the religious chronicles and memoirs of foreign travelers written several centuries ago.

3: Centro Historico de Sintra

Descending from the mountain, we will go to the meeting point, to the Historic Center of Sintra, where you will be able to observe in the mountains ahead of you the path you have taken and where you will record the memory of a night which, speaking of many others from the past, will accompany you throughout your life.

Well start the day with a visit to the magical Pena Palace, the red-and-yellow Disney-like castle that sits atop Sintras second highest peak.
Next stop, lunch at a traditional Portuguese restaurant.Think fresh, local ingredients and plenty of wine!
After lunch we visit the 12th century Peninha Sanctuary. From here youll take in 360-degree views of the forest, the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais. As we cruise around in one of our convertible jeeps we will take you off-road to epic lookouts and secret spots other visitors cant reach. Snap Polaroid pictures at the coast, play epic tunes all day long and give you the chance to taste Sintras traditional sweet pastry and Port wine.
Palace tickets (7,5 p/person) and lunch (25-30 p/person) are not included. Our visit will exclusively cover the terraces, chapel, and gardens. Depending on the season the waiting times can affect or compromise parts of the rest of the experience as host no longer have priority in the queues
