This isnt the earliest known use of the site either, as archaeological excavations has found it was once used for farming. Some of the early farm buildings may even have been recycled and incorporated into the burial site. Today, the remains of Clava Cairns are located on two separate sites. The main site Balnauran of Clava sits in a quiet, leafy setting. It consists of three large burial cairns, each surrounded by a stone circle. Two of the cairns are passage cairns, where the central burial chamber is accessed via a narrow corridor. Between the two passage cairns sits a kerb cairn, with an enclosed central burial chamber. Cup and ring markings, which commonly occur during this period, can be found on the cairns and stones. Sadly, the true meaning of this ancient art has been lost in time so we can only guess at the significance30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Culloden BattlefieldCulloden Battlefield Visit the powerfully moving site of the final Jacobite Rising the last and most harrowing pitched battle to be fought on British soil. A visit to Culloden is a poignant experience. Headstones mark the graves of hundreds of clansmen who gave their lives for the Jacobite cause; a 6m-high memorial cairn honours the fallen; and an eerie silence often falls across wild Drummossie Moor there is no escaping the emotions Culloden evokes.

The troops stationed there were to maintain law and order and enforce the Disarming Act of 1716.The barracks saw action twice. 1 hour 30 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included6: Beauly PrioryVisit Beauly and the Old Priory building. Beauly was again another Highland location mentioned heavily in Outlander and is the home of Lord Lovat again mentioned in Outlander.
Old Priory Beauly is a well visited location and the ruins look spectacular in its current state. It is estimated to have been founded in 1230. The French monks, had a strong enough French-speaking presence to give the location and the river the name "beau lieu" ("beautiful place") and have it pass into English.
An alternative story about the naming of Beauly village is that 'Mary, Queen of Scots' was said to have been travelling through the area, in her late teens and popped her head out of the Carriage window and uttered the words 'Beau Lieu' (beautiful place).
It is not the best documented abbey, and few of the priors of Beauly are known by name until the 14th century. It became Cistercian on 16 April 1510, after the suppression of the Valliscaulian Order by the Pope.

Urquhart Castle was once one of Scotlands largest castles and has been fought over many times with control of the castle passing back and forth between the Scots and the English during the wars of independence. It is near here that St Columba is purported to have seen the loch ness monster in 580 AD, the monster came out of the water to attack one of his disciples and St Columba banished it back to the water. The castle gatehouse was deliberately destroyed in 1692 so it could never be used again as a military stronghold.1: Culloden BattlefieldAfter Urquhart Castle we come to Culloden Battlefield where on the 16th April 1746 the last battle on British soil took place. The battle was fought between the Jacobites who wanted to restore the Stuarts to the throne and the Hanoverians who were the government. In less than one hour more than 1600 men were killed, 1500 of them Jacobites. The battle lasted just over one hour. The result of this battle was to change the way of life in the highlands forever.
1 hour 20 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included2: Clava CairnsLess than a mile from the Battlefield we come to Clava Cairns, this ancient burial ground is more than 4000 years old. Diana Gabaldon is believed to have taken inspiration for her outlander series. The winter solstice was a very important time for these people and the cairns are aligned in a south westerly direction to face the midwinter sun.
20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Cawdor CastleAfter Clava we head to Cawdor Castle. Cawdor Castle has been home to the Thanes of Cawdor for centuries and is one of the few castles in the Highlands to be left unscathed after the Jacobite uprisings, this is very surprising considering it lies between Auldearn and Culloden where two battles took place. The castle is still lived in today by the Dowager Countess of Cawdor.
1 hour 20 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included4: InvernessContinuing back to Inverness we stop at Inverness Cathedral, this is the most northerly Anglican cathedral in the UK and was completed in 1866. Driving through Inverness we pass the Old High Church where the Jacobite prisoners were held after Culloden before they were executed in the graveyard, you can still see musket ball marks on the church wall where the executions happened. Opposite the Old High Church you will see the Dunbar Hospital, built with stones from Cromwells citadel, the stones originally from Beauly Priory. Further along this street we pass Abertarff House, the oldest house in Inverness dating from 1593 and once the townhouse for the chiefs of Clan Fraser. Continuing through Inverness we pass Inverness Castle and you will see the statue of Flora Macdonald, famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape to Skye after Culloden.45 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeADDITIONAL INFOInfants and small children can ride in a pram or strollerService animals allowedPublic transportation options are available nearbySpecialized infant seats are availableTravelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitnessThe remaining time is allocated for driving time and also stops for lunch and photo stops. Not wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 8 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYFor a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.(For information purpose only - definite start times will show on voucher, once confirmed) -

Simon, in the context of "Outlander," would have nominally been Jamie's Grandfather. In real life, Lovat was an interesting and colourful character, the subject of the book, "The Last Highlander."1: Old High St Stephen's ChurchIn the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden Jacobite prisoners were held in the tower of the Church. Blindfolded, they were summarily executed one by one. Since this was indeed a civil war, it was not unreasonable to believe that wounded prisoners being held at Balnain House across the river may well have witnessed brothers or other relatives being shot. You can still see the mark made by musket balls in the wall of the tower. Brutality was commonplace.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Culloden BattlefieldFighting with Bonnie Prince Charlie's, Jacobite Army, Jamie Fraser, the hero of Diana Gabaldon's books and the film series, lay wounded here and was thought to be dead. The Fraser stone marking where the men of his clan fell is close to the central monument on the Battlefield. It is seldom without floral tributes.
The Visitor Centre is award-winning and well worth the time it takes to absorb all its attractions.
Culloden was the last pitched battle ever to be fought on British soil and the defeat of the Clans marked the end of the Highland way of life forever.
Post Culloden, an Act of Proscription banned the wearing of tartan, the carrying of Arms, the speaking of the Gaelic Language and the playing of bagpipes for 40 years. Virtual ethnic cleansing ensued in the King's name, levied by his son, William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, earning him the title, Butcher Cumberland.
1 hour 30 minutes -Admission Ticket Not IncludedCulloden Moor (Pass by)Kings House Stables . Jacobite Officers[ Jamie Fraser amongst their number] were rounded up imprisoned overnight, particulars taken and summarily shot in the field the following morning.3: Clava CairnsAdmission Required This 4,000-year-old burial ground is thought to be also a communal meeting place for the Pictish community which it served, perhaps even an early parliament. The three cairns are each surrounded by a ring of standing stones and these are thought to be the inspiration for Creag Na Dun in the "Outlander" books and film. The field is built on lay lines and energy conduits are believed to travel from the stones to the cairns. Two stones, in particular, attract fans, the tallest stone at number one cairn and the butterfly stone at Cairn number three which is often used as a logo for bloggers. Both have characteristics of the stones that appear in the film version of the series. It doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to believe that this spiritual place was the focus of many ceremonials lost to our present-day practices. This is a special visit which has a profound effect on some people.40 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: Wardlaw MausoleumBuilt originally on the end of the Parish Church in 1634, Wardlaw Mausoleum was the family burial place for the Lovat Frasers. Notable amongst the dignitaries in the crypt here is the coffin, reputedly of Simon, Lord Lovat, the Old Fox, (grandfather of Jamie Fraser of Outlander fame.) A recent controversy concerning the validity of the remains, reveals doubt. A forensic investigation, by Dame Sue Black, apparently reveals that the remains, which are most intact, appear to be those of a headless woman of around 30 years of age. Simon, along with two other rebel Earls, Lord Balmerino and Lord Kilmarnock were executed on Tower Hill in London. The authorities there claim that all three were buried in the wall of the Tower. The custodian of Wardlaw is seeking permission for these remains to be exhumed. Follow this on the Wardlaw website. This is a privileged visit and requires respect and decorum to be afforded to the Fraser family and the custodians of the Mausoleum.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: Castle LeodThis 12th Century Castle has survived many travails in its long history and is today the home of the Earl of Cromartie, the chief of clan MacKenzie.
The filming of Outlander was completed at Doune Castle near Stirling and was named Castle Leoch. This is plainly a homage to the real-life home of the clan you were Jamie Frasers guardians and kinsmen.
By special arrangement we are allowed to drive into the grounds for a photo opportunity with the Castle in the background. On a number of special days in the year, as advertised on the castles website, it is possible to visit the Castle and meet the Chief and maybe Lady MacKenzie.
There is a very pleasant woodland walk in the grounds with some very special trees including one
planted by Diana Gabeldon who is a patron and friend of the Estate.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included6: Beauly PrioryFounded in 1230 by monks of the Valliscaulian order from Dijon in France and John Byset, a local landowner, the Abbey was visited by Mary Queen of Scots who was brought up in France and betrothed to the Dauphin. She is credited with possibly naming the town by remarking, Beau Lieu Beautiful Place.
Many chiefs of Clan Fraser and Clan MacKenzie are buried here.
The Outlander connection has Claire receiving advice from a female Gaelic Seer while Jamie lay wounded in the rear chapel. Ultimately this was the site of them leaving Scotland for France on a schooner anchored in the Firth.
Oliver Cromwell sacked the Priory and had stone transported to Inverness by barge to build his Citadel there.
30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: Fort GeorgeThis formidable fortress is a tangible statement by the British Government that never again will a Highland Army be raised against the British Crown. Built from 1746 in the aftermath of the 45 Jacobite Rebellion it cost a monstrous £240,000 a huge amount of money at that time. It is still today home to the Black Watch Regiment of the British Army.
