Alhambra Craft Workshops
Discover "the Alhambra with your hands" a fun activity for children, adults and families in our central location of Granada (500 m from the Cathedral).

You will learn the basics of Arabic decoration, manage the tools and materials to make your first work of Andalusian craftsmanship.

You can choose between making a tile mosaic, decorating with paint and gold leaf an Alhambra plaster piece or making a taracea chess board (grenadine marquetry).

"The Alhambra with your hands" will be an unforgettable, special and unique memory of the Granada of the Alhambra.

This workshop will take you through the spirit of Hispanic-Musulman artisans in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere under the supervision of our artisan.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Discover the "Alhambra Workshops with your hands" a fun activity for children, adults and families in our centrally located classroom in Granada (500 m from the Cathedral).

You will learn the basics of Arabic decoration, you will handle the tools and materials to elaborate your first masterpiece of Andalusian craftsmanship.

Paseo de los Tristes offers stunning views of the Alhambra and begins at the point where it crosses the Bridge of the Chirimias; the Chirimias are a kind of flute that was once played from a balcony or veranda built there for such use.

3: Sacromonte

The Sacromonte district is located on the Valparaiso hill of Granada and borders the north-east side of the Arab El Albaícin district. In the 15th century, a large group of Roma, or the Spanish gypsies (the Gitanos) situated themselves here. They created houses by making cave homes in the hills; the Sacromonte district owes its fame to these houses. In the 15th century, the Valparaiso hill received the status of holy mountain, because people believed the caves in the hill contained the remnants of the city's patron saint, San Cecilio. The literal meaning of Sacromonte is therefore holy mountain.

4: Albaicín

The Albaycin is the old Arab Quarter. It comprises approximately the area between the hill of the Alhambra, the hill of San Cristobal, the Sacromonte and Elvira.

The Albaycin is like a different world within Granada. This is due to the strong Muslim influence in this area. It was the place where the first Siri court was built in the eleventh century.

The city descended from Saint Nicholas to the banks of the River Darro. The Albaycin featured luxurious carmenes and public baths, like the Banuelo

At the height of splendour the Albaycin enjoyed in the last years of Nazarid dominance, the quarter comprised a population of more than forty thousand inhabitants and thirty mosques.

The streets were very narrow and small with clean houses, plus numerous wells, some of which are still in the Albaycin.

With the reconquest, the Albaycin was left for Muslims as their own place of residence.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Meet your guide in central Granada, and set off into UNESCO-protected Albayzín, one of the citys most historical quarters.

Covering a hill facing the Alhambra Palace, this quaint neighbourhood forms Granadas medieval heart, and consists of old Moorish and Andalucian buildings clustered around labyrinthine cobbled streets.

Learn about Albayzíns 11th-century roots, and meander through the picturesque lanes to admire the whitewashed houses with their flower-filled balconies, as well as churches, squares, and fountains. Pass landmarks like the old city gates and other Moorish remnants, and drink in panoramic views of the Alhambra atop the neighboring hill.

Next, continue to the Sacromonte district to the east of Albayzín. This fascinating quarter is home to Granadas Roma gypsies, who first arrived here in the 15th century, and is famed for its underground, rock-cut homes.

Follow the cobbled path around the hillside, and see some of the traditional caves where gypsies and others still live. Many are now flamenco bars and tiny museums that showcase the traditional lifestyles, arts, and handicrafts of the original cave dwellers.

8: El Banuelo

Traditionally, it has been dated to the 11th century, that is, the zirí stage is part of a second construction stage of the zirí dynasty, corresponding to the reigns of Badis and Abd Allah (1038-1090). The Hammam al-Yawza or Bano del Nogal has been known since the late 19th century with the diminutive of Bañuelo for being smaller than the Alhambra's royal baths.

On a rocky hill that is difficult to access, on the banks of the River Darro, protected by mountains and surrounded by woods, among the oldest quarters in the city, the Alhambra rises up like an imposing castle with reddish tones in its ramparts that prevent the outside world from seeing the delicate beauty they enclose.

Originally designed as a military area, the Alhambra became the residence of royalty and of the court of Granada in the middle of the thirteenth century, after the establishment of the Nasrid kingdom and the construction of the first palace, by the founder king Mohammed ibn Yusuf ben Nasr, better known as Alhamar. The fortress became a citadel with high ramparts and defensive towers, which house two main areas: the military area, or Alcazaba, the barracks of the royal guard, and the medina or court city, the location of the famous Nasrid Palaces and the remains of the houses of noblemen and plebeians who lived there.

The habitual residence of the kings of Granada, their construction began at the beginning of the 14th century. The Nasrid Palaces are a palatial complex formed by three buildings:
- The Mexuar is the oldest hall. It was employed for meetings between the ministers of the king and as a courtroom.
- Next, we come to the Palace of Comares, which dates back to the era of Yusuf I. This dwelling was erected around the Patio de los Arrayanes (Courtyard of the Myrtles), and its side exits lead to the Sala de los Embajadores (Hall of Ambassadors) and the Sala de la Barca (Hall of the Boat). The Hall of Ambassadors is located inside the Tower of Comares.
- The Palace of the Lions, dating back to the era of Muhammed V, is also a royal residence. A palace that met all the comforts of the time for the emperor and his family, as the Alcázar, next to the Alhambra, Construction of the palace began in 1527 and financed entirely in 1957.

2: Nasrid Palaces

The habitual residence of the kings of Granada, their construction began at the beginning of the 14th century. The Nasrid Palaces are a palatial complex formed by three buildings: - The Mexuar is the oldest hall. It was employed for meetings between the ministers of the king and as a courtroom. - Next, we come to the Palace of Comares, which dates back to the era of Yusuf I. This dwelling was erected around the Patio de los Arrayanes (Courtyard of the Myrtles), and its side exits lead to the Sala de los Embajadores (Hall of Ambassadors) and the Sala de la Barca (Hall of the Boat). The Hall of Ambassadors is located inside the Tower of Comares. - The Palace of the Lions, dating back to the era of Muhammed V, is also a royal residence. It is composed of a central courtyard, the Courtyard of the Lions, and halls along each side, the Hall of the Mocarabes, the Hall of the Kings, the Hall of the Two Sisters, the Hall of the Ajimeces, leading on to the mirador Daraxa viewpoint, and the Hall of the Abencerrajes, along with the Harem.

Beyond the walls of the Alhambra, in a mountain called Cerro del Sol, lies the Generalife, a country estate belonging to the Nasrid sultans that was also used for agricultural production.
