The Thames River flows for 215 miles from Gloucestershire in the west to the Thames Estuary and the North Sea in the east, making it the longest river in England. The area along the Thames has been at the epicenter of much of England`s military and economic history, and has served an important role in the growth of England since the time of the Romans. Some of the most noteworthy cities in the region include Oxford, in Oxfordshire, home to the world`s oldest and most prestigious English-speaking university; Windsor, in Berkshire, home to one of the British royal family`s official residences, Windsor Castle; and London, the largest city in the United Kingdom, which has been one of the world`s most influential cities for over 2,000 years.
