WHAT TO EXPECT

Your tour begins with an early morning pick-up from your central Izmir hotel by air-conditioned coach. As you drive south to Ephesus, listen as your guide fills you in on the history of the ancient city, which was once the Roman capital of Asia Minor and at its peak between 1 AD and 2 AD.

On arrival, follow your guide and small-group of no more than 15 people around the UNESCO-listed ruins, pausing to admire archeological wonders such as the Temple Of Hadrian, the magnificent Celsus Library, and the Great Theatre, which seats up to 24,000 people. Learn more about life in ancient Roman times as you peek into the Public Latrines and Roman Baths, stroll around the Agora, and walk down the grand marble-paved Arcadian Way.

The House of the Virgin Mary (or Meryem Ana Evi in Turkish) is a place where, according to the beliefs of many people Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent the last years of her life. She was supposed to arrive at Ephesus together with St. John and lived there in the years 37-45 CE until her Assumption (according to Catholic doctrine) or Dormition (according to Orthodox belief).

This magnificent library dating from the early 2nd century AD, the best-known monument in Ephesus, has been extensively restored. Facade niches hold replica statues of the Four Virtues. From left to right, they are Sophia (Wisdom), Arete (Goodness), Ennoia (Thought) and Episteme (Knowledge).

We are setting off with our guide from the meeting point in Izmir in the morning. We start our tour from the house of the Virgin Mary, where it is believed that Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent the last years of her life here. Catholic pilgrims visit believing that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was brought to this stone house by the Apostle John and lived and died in this house until she was taken to heaven. Then we are on our way to the Ancient City of Ephesus, which is one of Unesco's World Heritage Sites. Dec. Ephesus, one of the most important port cities of the ancient world, is also mentioned in the books of Revelation as one of the seven churches. We visit the magnificent Celcus Library, the Temple of Hadrian, one of the best preserved and most beautiful buildings, the Odeon and the Trajan's Fountain. We are walking along the historical marble street to the Grand Theater where St. Paul preached. After our visit here is over, we are going to the restaurant to experience Turkish cuisine. After an exquisite dining experience belonging to Turkish culture, we visit the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World, which is the last stop of our tour. After our visit, we will return to our meeting point in Izmir.

Expect prompt pickup at 8am at your Izmir hotel. In a comfortable tour vehicle, travel to the ancient city of Ephesus, located about 37 miles (60km) away.

Once there, disembark for a tour of the city's major sights, accompanied by your guide's informative commentary about Ephesus' history and what it was like to live in the ancient Roman and Greek eras in Anatolia. House of Virgin Mary is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the area together with Saint John. Ephesus is an exceptional testimony to the cultural traditions of the Hellenistic, Roman Imperial and early Christian periods. Ephesus is an important site for Christianity; being one of the seven Churches of Revelation. Apostle Paul probably spent two and half years in Ephesus during his third missionary journey. In two hours, you will be exploring the city by walking on the marble streets, accompanied by our English speaking tour guide.

In our tour, we will be seeing Odeon, State Agora, Prytaneion, Memmius Monument, Domatian Temple, Hercules Gate, Curetes Street, Hadrian Temple, and Latriens. 1: Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House)

The House of Virgin Mary is one of the pilgrimage centres of Christians where the Mary came to Ephesus with John the Apostle and lived her last 10 years.
Pope Paul VI visited the shrine in 1967, and 'unofficially' confirmed its authenticity. Pope John Paul II also visited the shrine in 1979. Pope Benedict XVI visited this shrine in 2006.
Whether or not she died in Ephesus was not known until Anne Catherine Emmerichs vision. A disabled German nun who had never been to Ephesus, had a vision of the House of the Virgin Mary and described it in detail to the German writer Clemens Brentano who later published a book about it. Catherine Emmerich died in 1884. In 1891 Paul, Superior of the Lazarists from Izmir read about her visions and found a little building which corresponded with Emmerichs descriptions. Then, the archeological works started which allows us to visit Mary's House and see the result today!

3: The Temple of Artemis

Artemis was the Greek goddess, the virginal huntress and twin of Apollo, who replaced the Titan Selene as Goddess of the Moon.

The ancient temple was built around 650 BC to the cult of Artemis, was constructed on a site already sacred to the Anatolian Mother Goddess, Cybele. The temple was financed by the wealthy king of Lydia and the marshy ground was selected for the building site as a precaution against future earthquakes.

During the time, it has been destroyed and collapsed many times due to the natural disasters.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your guide meets you at the cruise ship port in Izmir to start your tour.

Travel in a comfortable climate-controlled vehicle for a little less than one hour to reach the House of Mother Mary, where the Virgin Mary is said to have lived out her final years. Designated a pilgrimage site by the Pope, the site includes a small sanctuary, wishing wall, and lush gardens.

After about 45 minutes, continue to Ephesus, the ancient Roman city that was at its peak between 1 AD and 2 AD and home to more than 250,000 people. Your guide takes you on a walking tour of the ancient site, which is considered the most complete Greco-Roman classical city excavation in the world.

Have a few hours to take in the wonders of Ephesus, have a lunch of traditional Turkish cuisine in the garden of a local handicrafts center. Then learn about carpet weaving before continuing to your final stop, the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Your tour ends with return to the Izmir cruise port in the late afternoon.

Drive to The House of Virgin Mary is located on the Aladag Mountains 5 miles away from Ephesus. At the third Ecumenical Council on 431 AD in Ephesus, it was claimed that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D. After the discovery of the house, the Archbishop of Izmir declared there as a place of pilgrimage in 1892. On July 26, 1967, Pope Paul VI visited this place and prayed there

3: Ancient City of Ephesus

We will start visiting one of the main highlights in Turkey, Ephesus, one of the 12 cities of Ionian League (an ancient Greek district on the western coast of Asia Minor) is located near Izmir. As a port city it was a major departure point for trade routes into Asia Minor.

Walk through history along marble streets lined with wonderful public buildings, among them the Baths of Scholastica, the Library of Celsus; it was built in the beginning of the 2nd century A.D. by Gaius Julius Aquila to be a memorial to his father Gaius Julius Celsus Polemanus, the proconsul of Province of Asia. , the Temple of Hadrian and The Grand Theater are two of the most impressive buildings in Ephesus. Grand theatre was built in 3rd century B.C and it was later expanded to 24.000 spectators by the Romans in the 1st century A.D.
