The National Dance Company & BBC Welsh National Orchestra of Wales are also based there. As are numerous other arts organisations.

In 2017, a large stage was constructed as part of the Champions League Festival, in the build up to the UEFA Champions League Final. DJ Steve Aoki headlined a free concert there the night before the final.Cardiff Bay Barrage (Pass by)Cardiff Bay Barrage took 7 years to build. In the 1990s, it was one of the largest civil engineering projects in Europe. At a cost of £120m the Barrage opened in 2001. Sitting on the mouth of the Severn Estuary, Cardiff experienced the same tidal ranges as the rest of the Severn Estuary, which are the 2nd highest in the world. This meant that when the tide went out, large mudflats were exposed. Cardiff was susceptible to flooding from tidal surges. The construction of the Barrage helped solve both these issues. First it stopped water going out with the tide, making the area more attractive, usable and likely to attract investment, whilst also protecting Cardiff from flooding by keeping tidal surges out.
The Barrage created a 2 square kilometre freshwater lake. Its construction started the regeneration of Cardiff Bay and Cardiff as a whole. Today the Barrage also provides a walk and cycle path linking Penarth and Cardiff.Roath Park (Pass by)Roath Park is a popular destination for families and joggers alike, located in the north of Cardiff. Alexandra Gardens is one of 3 Gardens located within Cathays Park. It is the largest of the 3 and contains formal lawns, with island flowerbeds and trees. The Welsh National War Memorial, is in the centre of the park, and was unveiled in 1928. OVERVIEWIf youre a true Doctor Who fan or just interested in the show, this Cardiff Doctor Who Private Walking Tour allows you to hear all about the shows filming in the city without the rush of a massive group tour. A guide who is a Doctor-Who enthusiast themselves takes you around the city sharing the shows facts while also giving you an introduction to Cardiff.See Doctor Who filming locations in Cardiff while getting a city introductionA private tour can be customized to your needs and interestsHear tidbits about even the newest episodes of the show from a guideA walking tour keeps you active while you sightseeINCLUDESGuideEXCLUDESGratuitiesCost of transport to Cardiff Bay (either Train or Taxi)MEETING AND PICKUPMeeting pointCentral StationPlease wait outside the main entrance to Cardiff Central StationOptions and Start timeCardiff Doctor Who Private Walking Tour:09:00 AMEnd pointNational Museum CardiffThe tour will finish the National Museum of CardiffWHAT TO EXPECTWomanby Street (Pass by)Explore how the same location can be used in two separate Doctor Who episodes, with two very different Doctors. Starting with "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" we will explore how this non-descript location is transformed into 1940's Blitz London. Then we will discuss how the same location, filmed from a slightly different angle and 'dressed' in a different way could be used as Pete's World from "Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel" with not even the most eagle-eyed fans spotting that it was the same place.Tiny Rebel Cardiff (Pass by)The Urban Tap House, owned by the renowned Tiny Rebel brewing company is one of the best pubs in Cardiff. Seen in the background of "Face the Raven" when Rigsy is exploring the streets of London for the alien trap street, at this location you will learn how, and why, Cardiff so often doubles for London in Doctor Who (and several other TV series and films).
From outside the Urban Tap House (please let us know if you are over 18 and would like to stop here for a drink as part of the tour) we will be able to see The Principality Stadium, formally the Millenium Stadium, which is home to Welsh Rugby and several episodes of Doctor Who including the series 1 classic Dalek.Saint Mary Street (Pass by)St Mary's Street is seen in the very first episode of 'New' Who "Rose" where James Howell's & Co doubles as Hendrick's department store. Blown up in the very first episode, this well-known departments store in the heart of Cardiff has been used as various Hendrick's department stores including in the episode "Closing Time" where Matt Smith's Doctor finally gets a job!Wharton Street (Pass by)Another trap street from "Face The Raven", this is where Peter Capaldi in a break between filming wandered off into a nearby music store and picked up a guitar.
This street is also where some of the funniest scenes from "The Runaway Bride" take place, and where a woman was woken rudely by a Tank! Find out what happened when you take this amazing tour!1: St John The Baptist City Parish ChurchSt John The Baptist Church in Cardiff is one of the oldest buildings left in the city. Used as a filming location for "The Runaway Bride" starring Catherine Tate and David Tennant, at this location you will hear about how the production team worked with the church so that they could use the church's organ and organist to play the Wedding March, but also why the Doctor Who team will never be allowed back to film here again. Finally, you will have the chance to find a cyberman hidden inside this ancient church.
Once outside the church, you will learn how filming for the Christmas special "The Voyage of the Dammed" was almost stopped by drunken students, who managed to miss Kylie Minogue who plays Astrid in the episode, who was hidden in plain sights - maybe she was protected by a perception filter!10 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeQueen's Arcade (Pass by)Queen's Arcade is seen in the very first episode of Doctor Who, whilst at this location, you will find out how the Doctor Who team managed to fool everyone into thinking that this shopping centre was in London, and how they worked with the centre management to bring the Auton invasion to life. The Friary (Pass by)The Friary is another location in Cardiff that is supposed to be in London. Seen in "Dark Water"/"Death in Heaven" two-parter in series 8 it is supposed to be close to St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London. Sadly due to restrictions on filming with firearms in the City of London these sequences had to be filmed in Cardiff. Did the Cybermen and UNIT team cause a scene in Cardiff when they filmed? Find out when we get to this location.2: Cathays ParkCathay's Park is one of the finest examples of a early 20th Century Civic Centre. The buildings in this part of Cardiff are constructed using the same stone as St Pauls, making it the perfect stand-in for London. Used numerous times in Doctor Who, this is were Danny Pink dies whilst on the Phone to Clara, and where Bill attends St Luke's University.
After exploring the Civic Centre, we will head to the National Museum Cardiff.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: National Museum CardiffThe National Museum Cardiff has been seen in numerous episodes of Doctor Who, Sherlock and other film and TV productions set and filmed in Wales. Home to one of the best collections of Impressionist and Post Impressionist Art in the UK it is worth a visit even before you consider its links to Doctor Who.
Whilst at the National Museum, your guide will show you some of the highlights of the collection as well as the spaces used in filming for Doctor Who - including the room where Gallifrey Falls/No More was displayed in the 50th Anniversary special "The Day of the Doctor".
Please note that the Museum is closed on Monday's. Tours booked on Monday will be unable to visit the interior of the museum but other locations will be added to the tour by the guide on the day to compensate for this.45 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeNew Theatre (Pass by)The new theatre is where sequences for both the Doctor Who episode "The Unquiet Dead" and The Sarah Jane Adventures episode "Secrets of the Stars" were filmed. Sadly we are unable to visit the auditorium of the theatre, but whilst outside the theatre, your guide will explain how The Sarah Jane Adventures came into being, and why they ended so suddenly in 2011.
From the New Theatre, we will walk to Cardiff Queen Street Station, where your guide will help you purchase return train tickets to Cardiff Bay where the final section of our tour will take place.4: Cardiff BayCardiff Bay is the modern name for the old Cardiff Docks which at their hight were the largest coal exporting docks in the world. Owned by the Marquis of Bute, the Jeff Bezos of the day, the area was as multicultural then as it is today. Home to the Wales Millenium Centre, Roald Dahl Plas, The Senedd, BBC Wales' Studio and countless Doctor Who filming locations. Whilst 'down the bay' as the locals would say, your guide will show you around one of the most interesting, and beautiful parts of Cardiff, the locations used during the filming of Doctor Who, and its more adult spin-off Torchwood including the internationally famous Ianto's Shrine.1 hour -Admission Ticket FreeThe Coal Exchange Hotel (Pass by)The Exchange Hotel is the former Coal Exchange in Cardiff. Famous for being where the first 1 Million Pound deal, was agreed in 1904 the area surrounding it is full of Doctor Who filming locations. Used in episodes such as "Rise of the Cybermen" and "The Lie of the Land" to name a few, whilst here your guide will explain how the Doctor Who team manage to film in such a public location without being mobbed by Whovians.Portland House (Pass by)Portland House is the former site of the Cardiff Dock branch of the National Provincial Bank which later became National Westminster Bank. Said to be where the first Million Pound Cheque was cashed, Portland House is seen in the hugely popular Doctor Who episode "Blink" as the Police station where Sally Sparrow reports her friend Kathy Nightingale missing.Mermaid Quay (Pass by)Mermaid Quay has changed dramatically since the filming of Doctor Who started in 2004. Home to Ianto's Shrine and the Torchwood Hub, here you will have a chance to take photos outside the famous shrine and see what people have left here in memory of the fictional torchwood character.Senedd (Pass by)The Senedd is the home to the Welsh Parliament (formally the National Assembly of Wales) and when open we will take a few moments to explore this iconic building. Used as Lazarus Labs in the episode "The Lazarus Experiment" whilst here your guide will explain how the Doctor Who team manage to film in such an important government building, and how Doctor Who is more important than James Bond!5: Wales Millennium CentreThe Wales Millennium Centre is one of the newest and most iconic buildings in Cardiff. Home to several resident arts organisations, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC National Chorus of Wales (both of which regularly provide music for Doctor Who) the Millennium Centre itself, is a major location in several episodes of Doctor Who. Perhaps most notable for its appearance in New Earth, the Wales Millennium Centre has also been seen in "The Sounds of Drums", "The Girl Who Waited" and "Vincent and the Doctor".10 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeRoald Dahl Plass (Pass by)Roald Dahl Plass is named after the famous children's author and son of the city of Cardiff. Educated at Llandaff Cathedral School he is just one of the famous Welsh cultural icons whose lives are celebrated throughout the city of Cardiff.
Roald Dahl Plass' most iconic feature is the Water Tower, a water fountain built by Nicholas Hare Architects and the sculptor William Pye which many people recognise as one of the entrances to the Torchwood Hub.
We will end the tour in Roald Dahl Plass, where your guide will be more than willing to suggest nearby places to eat, or point you to Cardiff Bay Train station where you will be able to take the short train journey back to Cardiff Queen Street Station.ADDITIONAL INFOInfants and small children can ride in a pram or strollerService animals allowedPublic transportation options are available nearbyTravelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitnessNot wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 15 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYFor a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.(For information purpose only - definite start times will show on voucher, once confirmed) -

OVERVIEWThe Cardiff Dark Side Tour shows you the other side of the Welsh capital.
Cardiff is a city renowned for its castle and its rugby stadium, built on the success of the Bute family and the coal exporting industry. However, it has a darker edge that one doesn't see today, one of hangings, executions, graveyards and disease, for example.
Even the most innocuous locations of central Cardiff that we walk by every day may have been the location of execution or slum.INCLUDESExperienced native English speaking guideMEETING AND PICKUPMeeting pointJohn Batchelor StatueThe walking tour starts from next to the statue of John Batchelor, who sits in the centre of Cardiff city centre on The Hayes. Indeed the city of Cardiff gets its name from the old Roman fort, as Cardiff or the Welsh version Caerdydd translates into English as "Fort on the river Taff". Developed by the Normans the castle has seen many changes and was once used as a royal prison. Developed further by various English marcher Lords, the castle fell into ruin in the 16th century. Taken over by the Marquis' of Bute in the 17th Century, it wasn't until the 3rd Marquis that the current version of Cardiff Castle came into being. Described as a victorian escapist dream, it is a stunning former stately home and Welsh national treasure.
Whilst here your guide will show you around the castle, including its most interesting historical features such as a million-pound ceiling, the Second World War Tunnels, and the Museum of Welsh Soldering. Finally, you will be able to climb the castle's keep and see the stunning views of Cardiff.2 hours -Admission Ticket IncludedSaint Mary Street (Pass by)St Mary's Street has historically been the heart of Cardiff's shopping district. Home to Cardiff's famous market and Victorian arcades, full of beautiful boutiques, cosy cafes, and the oldest record shop in the world, this is your chance to explore a part of Cardiff that is not normally seen on a tour.
Thanks to the nature of this private tour, you will be able to stop and explore any of the shops that take your fancy. You will also hear how these shopping gems are an integral part of life here in Cardiff, from a local guide who has spent many an hour exploring these beautiful arcades with their friends and family.2: Tiny Rebel CardiffThe Urban Tap House, owned by the renowned Tiny Rebel brewing company is one of the best pubs in Cardiff (please let us know if you are over 18 and would like to stop here for a drink as part of the tour). From outside the pub, we will be able to see The Principality Stadium, formally the Millenium Stadium, which is home to Welsh Rugby and several episodes of Doctor Who.
Whilst here we will explain how Ruby, a sport developed in an English Public School became the national sport of Wales, how the Millenium Stadium became the first sports stadium in Europe to have a closable roof, why the north stand of the old Cardiff Arm's Park was included in the building, and why for several years the home to Welsh Ruby became the home of the Football Association's Cup Final.
Finally, we will explain how the stadium, with its multi-purpose use, has welcomed some of the biggest names in the music business to Wales for the first time.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Spillers RecordsSpillers Records is the oldest record shop in the world and is a South Wales institution. Everyone who lives in, or near Cardiff has brought at least one record from this amazing part of local history.
Regardless of your musical tastes, Spillers will have something for you - often a record that you didn't even know you needed in your life but which will find its way into your possessions and your heart.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free4: Cardiff MarketCardiff's impressive Victorian covered market is another location that you might not experience unless a local took you there. A favourite with Cardiffians for its diverse range of products on offer, ranging from second-hand books to cakes, to fresh meat and fish, the market is a centre of food excellence. Whilst walking through the market you are free to stop and sample the local delicacies, explore the stalls, and spend, spend, spend!
Previously home to Cardiff's Goal (or Jail) it was outside Cardiff Market where Dic Pendryn was executed. One of Wales' most famous historical figures (although few people outside of Wales have heard of him), your guide will tell you how Dic, a labourer from nearby Merthyr Tydfil was charged with killing a soldier with a bayonet during the famous Merthyr Rising and hanged on the orders of Lord Melbourne - Queen Victoria's first Prime Minister - who was Home Secretary at the time of the riots.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free5: St John The Baptist City Parish ChurchSt John The Baptist Church in Cardiff is one of the oldest buildings left in Cardiff and the only building that remains from the old medieval walled town. Built around 1180 it is one of the few pre-norman building left in this part of Wales, although much of the church was redesigned in the 15th century after Owain Glwndwyr sacked the city in 1404.
Famous for its use in the TV series Doctor Who, in the episode "The Runaway Bride" starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, St John's Church should be known for its beautiful interior decor which includes Victorian stained glass by leading pre-raphaelites including William Morris which will be pointed out to you as part of the tour.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free6: Statue of Aneurin BevanAneurin 'Nye' Bevan is the father of the UK's National Health Service. Immortalised in a statue that many people in Cardiff walk past every day, which is used as a popular meeting place (many Cardiffians 'meet at Nye Bevan') and which is a preferred perch for pigeons, we will stop here to discuss how Bevan changed the UK forever. A major political opponent of Churchill during the Second World War, which brought him into the national consciousness, it was Bevan's experiences of poverty in Wales, his time spent working in a mine, and his position in the post-war Labour government that helped shape one of the most important, well-loved and adored institutions in the UK.
Whilst here we will discuss Bevan's role in the creation of the NHS, his history and his politics as well as exploring part of Cardiff's role in the Coal trade.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: Cathays ParkCathay's Park is one of the finest examples of an early 20th Century Civic Centre. Built on land previously owned by the Bute family, the buildings in this part of Cardiff are constructed using Portland Stone, the same stone as St Pauls Cathedral. Home to Cardiff's Crown Court, Cardiff University, The National Museum Cardiff, and the Welsh National War Memorial we will explore why this area is so important, and how it was built using the wealth brought into the city by the booming coal trade in the 18th - mid 20th century.
Whilst exploring the civic centre we will also discuss why Cardiff is now one of the most popular filming locations in the UK, and how this sector of the creative arts industry and the tourism it generates to the South Wales area is filling some of the gaps left by the de-industrialisation of Wales.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free8: National Museum CardiffThe National Museum Cardiff is home to one of the best collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Art in the UK. Its collection, which is spread over 15 galleries, includes masterpieces by Monet, Cézanne, includes Renoir's famous Blue Lady 'La Parisienne' and Rodin's 'The Kiss'. Also home to some of the best Welsh art, both modern and historic, it would be easy to spend a whole day in the museum exploring the world-class collection that is on permanent display. Sadly this tour can only offer you a taster of what is on show but promises to get you 'up close and personal' with as many of the most famous artworks. How did the National Museum manage to collect such an impressive range of art? Your guide will explain all, including who to thank, during the tour.
Please note that the Museum is closed on Monday's. Tours booked on Monday will be unable to visit the interior of the museum but other locations will be added to the tour by the guide on the day to compensate for this.1 hour -Admission Ticket FreeLlandaff Cathedral (Pass by)Llandaff is one of the most important Christian sites in Wales. Famous for its stunning cathedral that was heavily damaged by a German landmine during the Second World War, this area of Cardiff is where the author Roald Dahl grew up.
As we drive through this quaint area of Cardiff your guide will point out the Cathedral School, where the young Roald Dahl studied, and the site of Mrs Pratchetts sweet shop on Llandaffs High Street which is said to have inspired several of Dahl's stories including Mathilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.9: St Fagans National Museum of HistorySt Fagans National Museum of History is the most popular visitor attraction in Wales. Named Art Fund Museum of the Year 2019, St Fagans is like no other museum that you will have experienced before. Comprised of a collection of historic buildings that have been saved from demolition and transported to the museum St Fagans offers you the chance to see what living in Wales has been like since the Celtic period.
Starting with lunch in the Museum's excellent cafe which serves a range of hot and cold food, your guide will take you to explore a selection of buildings which we think summarises the museum's collection and the history of Wales. This summary includes recreations of an iron age roundhouse and a mediaeval Prince's court, a former workmen's institute, a row of terraces which explore the changing lives of people living in Wales, a School House and St Fagans Castle a Grade 1 listed building and one of the finest Elizabethan manor houses in Wales.2 hours -Admission Ticket FreeCardiff Bay (Pass by)Cardiff Bay is the modern name for the old Cardiff Docks which at their hight were the largest coal exporting docks in the world. Owned by the Marquis of Bute, the Jeff Bezos of the day, the area was as multicultural then as it is today. Now the cultural heart of Cardiff and the political centre of Wales, Cardiff Bay is home to the Wales Millenium Centre, Roald Dahl Plass, The Senedd, and the new BBC Wales' Studios. Whilst 'down the bay', as the locals would say, your guide will show you around one of the most interesting, and beautiful parts of Cardiff, explain its rich and vibrant history, and explain how Cardiff went from the largest coal exporting docks in the world to the beautiful waterfront you see today.10: The Coal Exchange HotelThe Exchange Hotel is the former Coal Exchange in Cardiff. Famous for being where the first 1 Million Pound deal, was agreed in 1904 this stunning Hotel is not only one of the top places to stay in Cardiff, but has also held concerts staring the likes of Sir Tom Jones, Beverly Knight, and Gregory Porter.

One of the many listed buildings in this area, our guide will explain why so many of these buildings are now at risk of being lost.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free12: Roald Dahl PlassRoald Dahl Plass is named after the famous children's author and son of the city of Cardiff. Educated at Llandaff Cathedral School he is just one of the famous Welsh cultural icons whose lives are celebrated throughout the city of Cardiff.
Roald Dahl Plass' most iconic feature is the Water Tower, a water fountain built by Nicholas Hare Architects and the sculptor William Pye which is a favourite with locals and tourists alike.
Known for numerous events throughout the year, Roald Dahl Plass is sometimes off limits due to the construction work required to host these events. This said if you are lucky enough to visit when one of the many free events are taking place, such as the International Food and Drink Festival, or the Cardiff Bay Beach our guide will be more than happy to show you around these amazing events as part of the tour.2 hours -Admission Ticket Free13: SeneddThe Senedd is the home to the Welsh Parliament (formally the National Assembly of Wales) and whilst here we will take a few moments to explore this iconic building which was designed by the famous architect Lord Richard Rogers. Designed to reflect the open and democratic nature of Welsh devolution, the Senedd is a masterpiece of modern architecture.
Whilst here we will discuss the role that Wales, its people (including the Welsh Tudor kings and David Lloyd-George) and its culture have had on UK politics. We will also discuss devolution in Wales and how the call for Welsh Independence from England is on the rise.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free14: Wales Millennium CentreThe Wales Millennium Centre is one of the newest and most iconic buildings in Cardiff. Home to several resident arts organisations, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the BBC National Chorus of Wales, and the internationally renowned Welsh National Opera. Andrew Lloyd Webber famously said that "There's nowhere in London that comes close to the Wales Millennium Centre", which was designed to reflect the unique character of Wales and its culture.
Whilst at the Wales Millennium Centre your guide will explain the international importance of the building and its resident organisations, how the building owes a lot to a very generous South African, and how everything in the building, even the door handles, were carefully considered to reflect the purpose of the building and Wales' history.
After exploring the Millennium Centre you are free to either stay in Cardiff Bay (where there are several amazing eateries) or as the guide to take you back to your accommodation.30 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeADDITIONAL INFOService animals allowedPublic transportation options are available nearbyInfants and small children can ride in a pram or strollerTravelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitnessNot wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 6 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYFor a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.(For information purpose only - definite start times will show on voucher, once confirmed) -

Considered to be one of the mightiest medieval castles in Europe, it was built to protect Norman/English interests in the area. Still an impressive sight to behold the Castle was restored by the Marquis of Bute and William Burgess, however, unlike their fantasy castles at Cardiff and Castell Coch, Caerphilly retains much of its medieval military might.
Surrounded by a lake (much reduced since its heyday but still impressive) the castle seems to rise out the water with its most impressive element - a tower that leans at an angle greater than the leaning tower of Pisa - a much loved and prominent feature.
Restored over 174 years, the castle is a testament to the work that the Marquises of Bute undertook to preserve the history that was contained within the property that they owned.1 hour -Admission Ticket Included2: Castell CochCastell Coch (or the Red Castle in English) is a unique castle within Wales. Built in the Neo-Gothic style, this Castle could be mistaken for a fairytale court or a fantasy fort and is a real hit with kids both young and old. Indeed the Castell has been used numerous times in films and TV shows for that exact reason! Described by the historian David McLees as "one of the greatest Victorian triumphs of architectural composition" the current Castell was intended as a summer retreat for its owners, who sadly never visited!
Designed by William Burgess for the Marquis of Bute, the Castle and its stunning decorations are not to be missed - nor are the breathtaking views of Cardiff, which can be seen from many of the Castell's rooms.1 hour -Admission Ticket IncludedLlandaff Cathedral (Pass by)Llandaff is one of the most important Christian sites in Wales. Famous with locals for its range of products and produce, including delicious cakes, rare vinyl records, second-hand books, and fresh fruit and veg, fans of TV series filmed in Wales may recognise the market from A Discovery of Witches and Torchwood. Considered to be one of the last bastions of 'old Cardiff' this is one of those locations that you would only visit with a local, who knows the secrets that this marvel has to offer including a 100-year-old family business that has traded from the same stall since 1928 and a fishmonger who has traded at Cardiff market since 1866!
Once the site of Cardiff's prison or gaol, the market now stands on the site of one of the most famous (or should that be infamous) miscarriages of justice in Wales' (and the UK's) history. But what happened? Starting with "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" we will explore how this non-descript location is transformed into 1940's Blitz London. Then we will discuss how the same location, filmed from a slightly different angle and 'dressed' in a different way could be used as Pete's World from "Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel" with not even the most eagle-eyed fans spotting that it was the same place.Admission Ticket Free3: Tiny Rebel CardiffThe Urban Tap House, owned by the renowned Tiny Rebel brewing company is one of the best pubs in Cardiff. Seen in the background of "Face the Raven" when Rigsy is exploring the streets of London for the alien trap street, at this location you will learn how, and why, Cardiff so often doubles for London in Doctor Who (and several other TV series and films).
From outside the Urban Tap House (please let us know if you are over 18 and would like to stop here for a drink as part of the tour) we will be able to see The Principality Stadium, formally the Millenium Stadium, which is home to Welsh Rugby and several episodes of Doctor Who including the series 1 classic Dalek.Admission Ticket Free4: Saint Mary StreetSt Mary's Street is seen in the very first episode of 'New' Who "Rose" where James Howell's & Co doubles as Hendrick's department store. Blown up in the very first episode, this well-known departments store in the heart of Cardiff has been used as various Hendrick's department stores including in the episode "Closing Time" where Matt Smith's Doctor finally gets a job!Admission Ticket Free5: Wharton StreetAnother trap street from "Face The Raven", this is where Peter Capaldi in a break between filming wandered off into a nearby music store and picked up a guitar.
This street is also where some of the funniest scenes from "The Runaway Bride" take place, and where a woman was woken rudely by a Tank! Find out what happened when you take this amazing tour!Admission Ticket Free6: St John The Baptist City Parish ChurchSt John The Baptist Church in Cardiff is one of the oldest buildings left in the city.
Once outside the church, you will learn how filming for the Christmas special "The Voyage of the Dammed" was almost stopped by drunken students, who managed to miss Kylie Minogue who plays Astrid in the episode, who was hidden in plain sights - maybe she was protected by a perception filter!10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free7: Queen's ArcadeQueen's Arcade is seen in the very first episode of Doctor Who, whilst at this location, you will find out how the Doctor Who team managed to fool everyone into thinking that this shopping centre was in London, and how they worked with the centre management to bring the Auton invasion to life.Admission Ticket Free8: The FriaryThe Friary is another location in Cardiff that is supposed to be in London. Seen in "Dark Water"/"Death in Heaven" two-parter in series 8 it is supposed to be close to St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London.
As this tour offers an overview of the city of Cardiff, we will be unable to enter the Castle during the tour. However, your guide will tell you the highlights of this impressive structure's history from outside the Castle.Saint Mary Street (Pass by)St Mary's Street has historically been the heart of Cardiff's shopping district.
You will also hear how these shopping gems are an integral part of life here in Cardiff, from a local guide who has spent many an hour exploring these beautiful arcades with their friends and family.Tiny Rebel Cardiff (Pass by)The Urban Tap House, owned by the renowned Tiny Rebel brewing company is one of the best pubs in Cardiff (please let us know if you are over 18 and would like to stop here for a drink as part of the tour).
Finally, we will explain how the stadium, with its multi-purpose use, has welcomed some of the biggest names in the music business to Wales for the first time.1: Spillers RecordsSpillers Records is the oldest record shop in the world and is a South Wales institution. Everyone who lives in, or near Cardiff has brought at least one record from this amazing part of local history.
Regardless of your musical tastes, Spillers will have something for you - often a record that you didn't even know you needed in your life but which will find its way into your possessions and your heart.10 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Cardiff MarketCardiff's impressive Victorian covered market is another location that you might not experience unless a local took you there.
One of Wales' most famous historical figures (although few people outside of Wales have heard of him), your guide will tell you how Dic, a labourer from nearby Merthyr Tydfil was charged with killing a soldier with a bayonet during the famous Merthyr Rising and hanged on the orders of Lord Melbourne - Queen Victoria's first Prime Minister - who was Home Secretary at the time of the riots.20 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: St John The Baptist City Parish ChurchSt John The Baptist Church in Cardiff is one of the oldest buildings left in Cardiff and the only building that remains from the old medieval walled town. Built around 1180 it is one of the few pre-norman building left in this part of Wales, although much of the church was redesigned in the 15th century after Owain Glwndwyr sacked the city in 1404.
Famous for its use in the TV series Doctor Who, in the episode "The Runaway Bride" starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, St John's Church should be known for its beautiful interior decor which includes Victorian stained glass by leading pre-raphaelites including William Morris which will be pointed out to you as part of the tour.10 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeStatue of Aneurin Bevan (Pass by)Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan is the father of the UK's National Health Service.
Whilst here we will discuss Bevan's role in the creation of the NHS, his history and his politics as well as exploring part of Cardiff's role in the Coal trade.Cathays Park (Pass by)Cathay's Park is one of the finest examples of an early 20th Century Civic Centre.
Whilst exploring the civic centre we will also discuss why Cardiff is now one of the most popular filming locations in the UK, and how this sector of the creative arts industry and the tourism it generates to the South Wales area is filling some of the gaps left by the de-industrialisation of Wales.4: National Museum CardiffThe National Museum Cardiff is home to one of the best collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Art in the UK.
Tours booked on Monday will be unable to visit the interior of the museum but other locations will be added to the tour by the guide on the day to compensate for this.1 hour -Admission Ticket FreeCardiff Bay (Pass by)After visiting the National Museum of Wales we will head to Cardiff Bay. Whilst at the Wales Millennium Centre your guide will explain the international importance of the building and its resident organisations, how the building owes a lot to a very generous South African, and how everything in the building, even the door handles, were carefully considered to reflect the purpose of the building and Wales' history.
After exploring the Millennium Centre you are free to either stay in Cardiff Bay (where there are several amazing eateries) or as the guide to take you back to your accommodation.10 minutes -Admission Ticket FreeADDITIONAL INFOService animals allowedPublic transportation options are available nearbyInfants and small children can ride in a pram or strollerTravelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitnessNot wheelchair accessibleThis tour/activity will have a maximum of 15 travelersCANCELLATION POLICYFor a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.(For information purpose only - definite start times will show on voucher, once confirmed) -
