EXPERIENCE BOCAS DEL TORO

Overview

Bocas Del Toro is a series of islands in northern Panama, along the Caribbean coast, near the border with Costa Rica. You can only get there by boat or plane, and once you arrive, the water taxi is the most common form of transportation. It’s one of Panama’s most popular destinations, known for its island vibes, lush tropical scenery, and vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture reflected in its rhythmic reggae and calypso music, flavorful dishes like coconut curry and fried fish, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe.

The area has been populated somewhat recently (mostly within the last 30 years), and is primarily made up of people from various areas of Panama with diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as many expats. There are, however, some areas of the islands with populations of aboriginals.

Each of the many islands has its own unique feel and it’s worth visiting as many as possible if you have time. The main town, Bocas Town, is on the Isla Colon and serves as the hub for visitors. The islands boast stunning beaches with soft white sand, turquoise waters, and palm-lined shores. The clear Caribbean waters make Bocas a haven for snorkeling and scuba diving, offering vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Nature lovers will also find plenty to explore, especially in Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, where jungle hikes lead to sloth sightings, colorful birdlife, and the iconic red frogs. Bocas is a well-known surfing destination too, with waves for all skill levels.
