Visit the town of Bran. Bran is a quiet, spread-out village with just a few thousand permanent residents. Rather than feeling like a traditional town with a defined center, it’s more like a region dotted with guesthouses, restaurants, and shops that have grown around one key attraction: Bran Castle.

The “city center” of Bran has several shops and restaurants. It is extremely touristy, and signs, windows, and souvenirs adorn it with references to Dracula and Vlad the Impaler. The town center doesn’t have a massive draw for visitors, it often can be overrun with cars and tour buses.

Visit the Bran Castle. Dating back to the 14th century, Bran Castle was initially built as a fortress to defend against Ottoman invasions. Over the centuries, it evolved into a royal residence and a symbol of national pride. While the connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula is largely fictional, the castle’s Gothic allure has cemented its status as a must for fans of the novel.

Perched on a rocky hilltop, the architecture of the castle blends a medieval fortification and romantic design. Explore the narrow staircases, hidden passageways, and turreted towers that seem straight out of a fairytale. The wooden balconies offer panoramic views of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains.

Tours are readily available and are a great way to visit the castle to learn more about the history and inhabitants of the castle, and you can also visit the castle on a self-guided or audio-guided tour.

Explore the Museum. Discover artifacts, furniture, and royal memorabilia that provides a glimpse into the castle’s storied past.

As it doesn't take long to see the castle, you may also wish to explore the local area. There is a little market at the entrance to the castle which sells lots of gifts and souvenirs. You can find handmade pottery, art, food and drink, woodwork, clothing, and much more here. Plus, there is also a local life museum, which is found just to the left of the entrance, where you can find preserved traditional Romanian housing. There is also a horror house in the market for the tourists (more aimed at children).

Go Hiking. If you feel like getting active, this part of Romania is surrounded by stunning countryside, which is perfect for hiking. Check out the popular (and challenging) Bran Castle to Magura village walk. The hike takes around 3-4 hours and covers 5 miles, starting with a steep climb. The beginning of the trail can be found in front of Vama Medievala Bran Museum. You can also continue the trail to explore the isolated villages of Magura and Pestera.

There are plenty of other hiking trails to discover. Bran is nestled between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului Mountains, providing access to scenic trails suitable for all levels. The Rucar–Bran Pass offers panoramic views and connects to charming villages like Moieciu and Fundata.

Explore Piatra Craiului National Park. Located nearby, this park is ideal for wildlife spotting, photography, and hiking through its dramatic limestone ridges and dense forests.
