Overview

The nearby town of Copán Ruinas is a charming and quiet place to explore, with cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, and a bohemian vibe.

Things to See & Do

Explore the Copan Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discovered in 1579 by Diego Garcia de Palacio, the ruins of Copan, one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization, were not excavated until the 19th century. It is renowned for its intricate Maya stelae, hieroglyphic stairway, and the Acropolis. The ruined citadel and imposing public squares reveal the three main stages of development before the city was abandoned in the early 10th century.

Visit the Museum of Maya Sculpture, located adjacent to the ruins. With nearly 60 exhibits and more than 3,000 pieces of sculpture, this museum offers the best original sculpture and architecture that the Mayans of Copan produced.

Explore the area of Las Sepulturas located just a short walk from the main site. This residential area offers insight into the elite Mayan life, featuring intricately carved tombs and courtyards.

Stroll through the town of Copan Ruinas. This is a charming area with cobblestone streets, colonial charm, and a laid-back vibe. Visit the central plaza and enjoy the many restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Stop in The Tea & Chocolate Place to discover the art of tea and chocolate making. Located in town, this place offers beautiful views alongside a selection of delicious teas or hot chocolate, and traditional snacks, all originally grown at the nearby Copan Botanical Research Station. This is especially nice to enjoy an hour during sunset.

Explore the Macaw Mountain Bird Park & Nature reserve. This is a tropical bird sanctuary for rescued birds. It’s about a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride from Copan Ruinas. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the nearby jungle while supporting the wonderful work of this rescue, rehabilitation, and release center. There are nature trails and a swimming hole to enjoy a refreshing dip in the water.

Soak in the Natural Hot Springs in Agua Caliente. This is a full-day trip from town, surrounded by lush jungle. There are two small swimming pools, as well as access to the river where hot water gushes from the rocks.

Visit a Coffee Plantation. The region around Copan Ruinas is known for its coffee, and there are several coffee plantations in the area that offer tours. Finca San Isabel is one in particular where you can learn about coffee cultivation and enjoy fresh brews. Tours often include transportation and meals.

Go Hiking or Horseback Riding in the countryside. In the surrounding hills and countryside alongside Macaw Mountain, there are guided tours or horseback rides, offering beautiful scenic views and cultural insight. The area is surrounded by beautiful forests that are home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, toucans, and parrots. You can visit the Los Sapos ruins nearby, La Pintada, or a Maya Chorti Village.
