Things to see and do
Visit one or all of the national parks on the island. The Lucyan National Park is the most popular, it is the oldest park on the island founded in 1982 by Peter Barratt, it covers 40 acres of land. It has the most cultural, and historical significance of all the parks and incorporates the largest underwater cave system in the world. The park includes 5 ecological zones from mangrove creeks, and coppice forests, to sandy dunes and coral reefs. There are nature trails and boardwalks leading through the park, and there are picnic areas and tables on the beach.
The Rand Nature Center is another national park located in Freeport it comprises 100 acres of natural beauty that was established in 1992. There are 2,000 feet of trails that wind through pine barrens, native and exotic coppice, and lead out to freshwater ponds brimming with plantlife and wildlife. This is a birdwatchers paradise housing a variety of bird species that can be spotted year round, the peak season is October through May, when winter residents and migratory birds arrive.
Peterson Cay National Park is a 1.5 acre small, rocking, deserted island located about a mile offshore. It boasts a nice beach, vibrant coral reefs for snorkeling and diving, and is only accessible by boat. This beautifu park is the only cay on Grand Bahama’s leeward side, it is an Important Bird Area and is a significant nesting colony for Bridled Terns. Visitors can take a short swim out to the main reef to see a diverse amount of marine life such as tropical fish, barracuda, and manta rays.
Visit Garden of the Groves, a lush botanical garden and serene oasis that stands out amid the vibrant bustle of Freeport. It is one of the most popular attractions in the city for nature lovers. It is housed in a beautiful replica of an old Bahamian mansion and offers free tours with a chance to mix, bottle, and name your own fragrance.
See the remarkable Cooper’s Castle, a fascinating landscape that offers visitors a unique glimpse of the history of the islands and its charming architecture. The castle was built by businessman Cooper Lightgourn in the 70s, and the design is reminiscent of European castles with turrets, battlements, and an impressive stone facade. This unique attraction uses cutting edge technology to grow corals up to 50X times faster than in nature, and boosting their resilience at the same time. The center plays a vital role in restoring marine ecosystems, and protecting coastal communities. They take fragments from local coral reefs and raise them in tanks, then once mature they transplant them back into the wild.
Spend the Day at UNEXSO, a renowned diving facility offering an extensive array of water based adventures such as dolphin encounters. The dolphin encounters allow participants to learn about dolphins behaviours, conservation, and their habitat, all while swimming alongside them. The center provides a safe and immersive environment in a large open lagoon. There are also opportunities for scuba divers (both beginners and experienced divers) to explore spectacular underwater caves, and sunke shipwrecks around Freeport.

There are some excellent shopping opportunities to explore when visiting Freeport. Wander around downtown freeport where you will find plenty of souvenir shops by the cruise ship docks. There are some unique boutiques where you can pick up Bahamian clothing, crafts and other authentic items. There are many vibrant stalls and stores worth exploring to find the perfect gift.
The Port Lucaya Marketplace is the largest shopping, dining and entertainment open air facility in all of the Bahamas. The bustling marketplace offers shoppers over 40 speciality stores and boutiques, it also boasts 11 restaurants, and 11 bars for dining, drinks, and entertainment. Theres a large variety of Duty-Free stores, two Straw Markets, two Craft Centers, and a myriad of other shops. Shoppers can pick up unique local arts and crafts, authentic Bahamian items like conch shells, straw hats, jewelry, and hand woven straw baskets. The massive complex covers 5 acres on the peninsula along the waterfront in Freeport.
Beaches
Grand Bahama Island boasts 43 names beaches, they are some of the main draws to the island with miles of pristine beaches surrounding the island lapped by some of the most beautiful crystal clear turquoise waters in the world. Grand Bahama Island is home to a sprawling reef protected shoreline, with cays that are filled with picturesque beaches that are sure to take your breath away.
Taino Beach is set in the vibrant heart of Freeport just a short distance from the cruise port. Xanadu Beach is the closest beach to the cruise port and close to the Xanadu Beach Resort where it gets its name. Its best knonow for its soft white sand, crystal clear waters, water sports, and a small coral reef.
Paradise Cove Beach is located at the west end of the island, a quiet, secluded beach and home to Paradise Cove Beach Resort where it get its name. Pay a small resort fee and relax on the beach for the day, there are options to rent loungers, snorkeling gear, and kayaks, as well as options for food and drinks at The Red Bar.
Lucaya Beach is near the Port Lucayan Marketplace and home to the Grand Lucayan Resort that offers visitors a day pass to use their facilities such as restrooms, lounge chairs, umbrellas, 6 swimming pools, hot tubs, hammocks, a locker room, free wifi and a restaurant.
Fortune Beach is a quiet beach located about 5 miles from Port lucaya Marketplace. It got its name from a $2 million dollar shipwreck that was discovered offshore by treasure hunters in 1965. Banana Bay restaurant is located here for food and drinks.
Visit Smith’s Point Beach situated adjacent to Taino Beach for the famed Wednesday night beach fish fry, with locals and visitors gather to eat, socialize and dance.
Cuisine
There is some delicious Bahamian fare to enjoy in Freeport with many restaurants, bars, hole in the wall joints found downtown along with highly regarded restaurants and upscale dining options. Many restaurants are located on the waterfront providing great menu items such as fresh fish and seafood and spectacular tropical views.
