Things to See & Do
Discover the Pico Bonito National Park. This expansive park of 500 square meters is a protected area due to itss unique ecosystem where numerous species such as toucans, lions, jaguars, leopards, and many more mammals. Visit the Cayos Cochinos Archipelago. Located about 18 miles northeast of La Ceiba. It is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, ideal for snorkeling and diving. The island are also home to a small Garifuna community, known for their music and culture, which you learn about. The beaches of Cayos Cochinos are one of the main tourist attractions. They are famous for their golden sand and clear waters.
See the animals at the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is accessible by a vintage train ride. Once you arrive, there are boat tours through the mangrove canals that are teeming with wildlife such as manatees, monkeys, and various bird species.
Visit the Lancetilla Botanical Garden. Founded in 1925, these gardens are the largest and most varied botanical gardens in Latin America, with over 2,000 species of plants from around the world. You’ll also find several animals, such as birds, monkeys, and reptiles, that inhabit the tropical forest.
Discover Cacao Lagoon (Laguna de Cacao). Located within the Nombre de Dios Nationa Park, this lagoon is home to wildlife that inhabits the mangroves and swampy areas of the country. Whether by hiking through the sugar cane and cocoa plants that cover everything, or by kayak or riding a horse, there are a wide variety of options to choose from.
Relax in the Hot Springs in the Mountains. Located in the Nombre de Dios National Park, there are two hot springs complexes in the middle of the rainforest. There you will find natural pools where you can bathe and relax in the middle of nature. The resorts also have restaurants and spas.
Nestled in the rainforest, the natural Sambo Creek hot springs offer a relaxing experience with thermal pools and mud baths. There are also canopy tours and hiking opportunities.
Beaches & Islands
Sambo Creek Beach: The beautiful beach of white sand and clear waters is located just a few miles from La Ceiba. This is an ideal place to enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and sun. There are several restaurants and bars near the beach to enjoy fresh seafood dishes and local Garifuna cuisine. There are also boat rides, horseback riding, and visits to the local indigenous communities in the area.
Roatán Island: Located 1 hour and 15 minutes by ferry from La Ceiba, this popular tourist destination offers beautiful white sand beaches, clear waters, and its coral reef, which is the second largest in the world, offers excellent opportunities for diving and snorkeling. This is a great area for paddle boarding to enjoy the island’s natural reserves, such as the Roatan National Marine Park or the Oak Ridge Mangroves.
The main towns to visit are Punta Gorda and Coxen Hole, where you can book excursions to other parts of the island or do water sports. We also recommend a visit to Gumbalimba Park to discover the wildlife that inhabits the island.
Utila Island: This is a small island with a population of around 4,000 people, and the main activity is tourism. For this reason, you will find a variety of activities and tourist attractions, such as scuba diving, fishing, or hiking trails. Utila Island is also famous for its stunning white sand beaches that offer a variety of bars and restaurants. To go to Utila, you can take a ferry from the port of La Ceiba; the duration of the trip is 3 hours.
Culture & Events
La Ceiba Carnival (Gran Carnaval Internacional de La Ceiba) is held annually in May. This is one of Central America's largest carnivals, featuring parades, music, dancing, and vibrant street celebrations along Avenida San Isidro.
Garifuna Cultural Experiences bring the Garifuna community together in villages like Sambo Creek, where you can experience traditional music, dance, and cuisine, offering a deep dive into this unique Afro-Caribbean culture.
