Overview

Things to See

First stop, head to the city center of Puerto Plata. Much of what you want to explore can be done on foot. This is also a hub for taxis and transportation to get to your final destination. The heart of the city is not large, but it’s a great way to experience the history and culture of the city.

The square in Puerto Plata has a beautiful, historic St Philip The Apostle cathedral on one end, along with rows of colorful buildings lining the other sides. There are little souvenir shops, street vendors, street art, and more! there may not be a ton of attractions that draw you into Puerto Plata (especially when you know it's right next to so many gorgeous beaches), but you will find it to be so charming!

Wander around the nearby streets of the town square. The city has been developing recently and adding more and more for tourists to enjoy, and there are a couple of streets in particular that you don’t want to miss. P.º de Doña Blanca, otherwise known as Pink Street where literally, everything is painted a rich, eye-catching pink. The sole purpose here is for you to have somewhere to take fun photos, so enjoy! The other famous street is Umbrella Street, perfect for photo ops as well!

Visit The Fortress Of San Felipe situated on a little peninsula that juts out from the mainland of Puerto Plata, this fort has been around since the 1500's. It's one of the first European forts built in this part of the world, thanks to explorer Christopher Columbus. Wander around and grounds and inside the fort, and get a view of the museum of the coast and the fishing port.

Take a Rum Factory Tour. The Macorix House of Rum prides itself on its premium brand of rum, Ron Macorix. Created in 1899, it has been a prominent fixture in the Dominican Republic ever since. Here, you can learn about the history of the brand as well as the process of making and distributing rum. Tours are available at the Macorix House of Rum factory, and the best time to visit is during the morning hours when the factory is less crowded.

Outdoor Adventures

Saddle up for a unique exploration by Horseback riding along the beach or the countryside. Let your horse lead you into the heart of nature and wildlife, listening to the birds fill the air with their songs, and noticing the wildflowers along the path. Or take a sunset ride along the beach. Skilled guides are with you every step of the way to ensure a safe and memorable experience, letting you connect with the land.

Take a visit to the Ocean World Adventure Park to swim with the dolphins. Ocean World’s unique experiences allow you to swim with dolphins in shallow or deep water.

Go snorkeling or scuba diving amongst the beautiful Caribbean Reefs. There are a handful of diving centers to take a guided underwater dive or snorkeling tour along the nearby reefs. These places also offer scuba lessons.

Discover the Damajagua River and Falls with stunning lagoons and waterfalls. This is one of the top things to do if you’re looking for adventure. Take a trek to the legendary Damajagua Waterfalls a series of 27 cascading pools (affectionately known as “27 Charcos” by locals) tucked away in the lush forest. Dive from varying heights of up to 25 ft into crystal-clear waters, swim beneath thundering falls and slide down the natural rock slides, all surrounding the beautiful Dominican Republic’s countryside. This is a very popular destination for visitors, but most people only go through the first few waterfalls. You will see fewer people the further along you go. This should be a must-do on your list of things to do in Puerto Plata!

Head to the Puerto Plata countryside and Adventure Park to go ziplining for almost 8,000 feet. Soar through scenic landscapes and cool off after the final ride by plunging into the swimming pool. It’s a great way to experience the beauty of the area from above.

Ascend Mount Isabel de Torres, a mountain located just southwest of Puerto Plata, standing tall at 2,555 feet above sea level for stunning views of the whole city and the coast. You can hike it, take the cable car, known as ”the teleferico”, or take a taxi to the top.

At the top of the mountain, there's a smaller replica of the famous "Christ the Redeemer" statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statue here sits on top of a dome that houses a souvenir shop inside. Fun! You can also enjoy dining at the restaurant located here. There are also spots where you can hike around and see some lush green landscapes, so make sure you walk around and explore. You likely don't need more than an hour at the top though.

Go White Water Rafting in teh Yaque del Norte River - the longest river in the Caribbean. It is located about an hour and a half from the city. It is definitely worth the trip and one of the most adventurous things to do in Puerto Plata!

Beaches

The beaches of Puerto Plata boast golden sands, turquoise waters, and a backdrop of blue skies, offering pristine locations and secluded landscapes along the North Coast. This region is home to around 43 distinct beaches, each with its own unique charm. In the main district, you'll find postcard-worthy spots like Long Beach, Camacho, and Acapulco, along with the more famous Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada, and Pueblito.

Heading east, you'll pass by beaches such as Bergantín and Cangrejo, before reaching the world-class Sosúa Beach, Alicia Beach, and others along the way to Cabarete Beach, known for its vibrant atmosphere. West of Puerto Plata, Costambar and Cofresí stand as iconic beaches from the golden age of North Coast tourism. Continuing along this route, you'll discover Teco Beach, Cambiaso, and a dozen more hidden gems near Luperón.
