Experience Rasnov
Overview
Rasnov is a small town located near the city of Brasov, nestled in the heart of Transylvania. It lies between Brasov and Bran, making it a great base or stopover for travelers exploring the region. It's mainly known for the Rasnov Fortress, which is open to visitors year-round. The Carpathian Mountains surround the town and offer a mix of history, nature, and quiet charm. The city center is walkable and relaxed with cafes, small shops, restaurants, and guesthouses.
Rasnov is a gateway to outdoor adventure such as hiking and biking in the nearby Bucegi and Piatra Craiului Mountains. Enjoy great skiing at Poiana Brasov in the winter months, just a 15 minute drive away. Paragliding and rock climbing are also great outdoor activities in the area offered for thrill seekers.
Things to see and do
Explore the Rasnov Fortress (Cetatea Râsnov), perched high on a hilltop with sweeping views over the entire city. Built in the early 13th century by the townspeople as a means of defense against Turkish invasions, the fortress is more functional than ornate; its simple design speaks to its purpose. Remarkably, it was only ever conquered once, in 1612, a testament to its strategic location and resilient construction.
Stop by Dino Park, Romania’s first dinosaur-themed adventure park, located halfway between the Rasnov Fortress and the main road. You’ll be greeted by a towering dinosaur at the entrance, setting the tone for a fun and imaginative experience. This family-friendly attraction is perfect for kids, featuring life-sized dinosaur replicas, themed playgrounds, treehouses, and plenty of interactive activities to spark young imaginations.
Discover Valea Cetatii Cave, a hidden gem nestled less than a mile from Râsnov Fortress, easily accessible on foot from the main road. Though modest in size, this cave offers a fascinating underground experience. As you step inside, a cool, damp atmosphere envelops you, and a knowledgeable guide shares the story of the cave’s formation. Walk around and admire the striking stalactites and stalagmites, beautifully illuminated to highlight their natural shapes. Valea Cetatii is the only cave in Brasov County open to visitors and is also known for its remarkable acoustics, so much so that it occasionally hosts live concerts by the Brasov Philharmonic, turning nature into a stage.
Go Hiking. The mountains in the area are absolutely beautiful, and the woods are quite inviting. There are plenty of wooded trails easy to explore from town.
Winter Activities
The Rasnov area offers a mix of outdoor adventure during the winter months. Just a short drive from town is the popular ski resorts of Poiana Brasov where visitors can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and sledding.
Staying in the town of Rasnov itself offers exploring scenic snow-covered trails for winter hikes, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing. If you’re lucky, you may be able to catch a winter concert inside Valea Cetatii Cave, where the cool temperatures and natural acoustics create a truly unique atmosphere.
Cuisine
Râsnov cuisine reflects Romania's rich gastronomic heritage, hearty and flavorful, with dishes that have been passed down through generations. A must-try is sarmale, cabbage rolls filled with a savory mix of minced meat and rice, often accompanied by mamaliga (creamy polenta) and a dollop of sour cream. Another traditional favorite is ciorba de burta, a tangy tripe soup enriched with sour cream and garlic, known for its comforting warmth.
For desserts, papanasi, fried or boiled doughnuts filled with sweet cheese and topped with sour cream and jam, are a local favorite not to be missed. The town offers a few eateries where you can savor these traditional dishes. Sub Cetate Sergiana is renowned for its authentic Romanian fare, while La NOI offers a cozy atmosphere with a menu that celebrates local flavors.
