Overview
Nestled along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Sosua is a picturesque town where sun-soaked beaches meet a vibrant blend of cultures. The town retains a strong European influence, particularly from German immigrants, stemming from the arrival of World War II refugees in 1938 who played a key role in shaping the area. It's an ideal destination to experience the rich local culture, from its stunning beaches to its traditional music and mouthwatering cuisine.
Things to See
The soft golden sand, the stunning views of the turquoise waters and the green, palm-lined coast make up the beautiful beaches of Sosua. The town’s main attraction, Sosua Beach is a crescent-shaped coastline with picturesque views of the bay. There are dozens of bars, restaurants, gift shops, and water activities to choose from. This is also considered the excursion hub in Sosua, as various water activities are available here.
Playa Alicia is a quieter alternative to Sosua Beach. It has a fascinating history of constantly adapting to nature’s will. From being no beach to now a vast sandy paradise to relax and swim. One of the best spots for sunset lovers. The beach is flanked and serviced by two restaurants, Stevens and the Waterfront, both bringing your order straight to your lounger by the beach.
Surfer’s paradise Cabarete is only 15 minutes east of Sosúa. Cabarete is one of the best wind and kite surfing spots in the world, has hosted PKRA World Kite Boarding Championships since 2001 and is running each year in February the Master of the Ocean-surf contest.
People love snorkeling and diving to check out Sosua’s underwater world of vibrant and diverse coral reefs. Rent some snorkeling gear and explore the coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, starfish, and other marine life. The catamaran and yacht excursions include snorkeling as part of the deal. Preferred spots are the Three Rocks, Sosua Bay, and the Canyon.
For a more luxurious experience, charter a private catamaran. Sail the serene waters, sunbathe on the deck, and relish the beauty of the coastline while you party with family and friends. The charter boats will make various stops in all the key snorkeling areas and secluded pristine beaches.
A must-see attraction in Sosua is the Jewish Community Museum, which gives visitors a captivating look into the town’s colorful past and how it served as a refuge for Jewish people escaping World War II. The museum’s displays and hands-on exhibits pay tribute to human courage and perseverance in a way that touches visitors.
For nature enthusiasts, El Choco National Park promises an unforgettable adventure. Explore lush green forests, take refreshing dips in crystal-clear pools, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic. Other must-see spots include the stunning Playa Dorada beaches, the lively town of Cabarete, and the historic El Batey district. Don’t miss the quirky Mundo King Art Museum, the scenic viewpoint at Los Charamicos, the panoramic vistas from Mirador Park, the striking Airport Wall artwork, Monkey Jungle National Park, and the underwater wonder of the Zingara Wreck.
Just a short drive from Sosua, Monkey Jungle (mentioned above) is a must-visit. This reserve offers zip-lining adventures amidst capuchin monkeys that freely roam the grounds. It is the best monkey experience in the island, featuring the experience in a large, natural enclosure that lets the monkeys come to visitors from a very relaxed, natural experience.
Los Charamicos was formerly a sleepy fishing village that has, in recent years, been converted into a business and residential area for Dominicans. The ambiance is typically Dominican: Here you will find tin-roofed shacks, vegetable stands, packed little shops and music everywhere; the typical Dominican everyday life.
Explore the area and backroad on an ATV adventure. It’s an adventurous way to discover the town’s rugged terrain. Tours explore rivers, forests, a waterfall, farmlands and the beautiful outback of the North Dominican Republic.
Cuisine
You can’t experience Sosua without trying the town’s lively and tasty local food. Indulge in the strong genuine flavors and the various fresh local ingredients like those from Productos Sosúa. Check out the local markets and talk to friendly vendors to discover more about the special ingredients and cooking techniques that make Dominican food what it is. The markets are a real treat for all your senses, from the sweet-smelling spices and herbs to the freshly-caught seafood.
There are various local restaurants, each with its own spin on classic Dominican foods. From the delicious mofongo, a favorite dish made with fried plantains and flavored with garlic and pork, to the tempting seafood dishes that show off the best of the Caribbean, every meal celebrates the town’s rich food culture.
Nightlife
Sosua boasts a vibrant nightlife scene with numerous bars and restaurants. Indulge in local delicacies, sip on tropical cocktails, and immerse yourself in the Dominican way of life. Dominican nightlife typically starts around 10pm. People gather in the center of Sosua or at Cabarete Beach, in the villages around Rancho Tipicos or at gas stations. Ojo Club/LAX is a hot spot in Sosua.
Merengue is the heart and soul of Dominican culture. Join the locals at a club or bar, and sway to the intoxicating rhythms of this traditional dance. Find yourself in a local bar enjoying great cocktails and the local vibes of Merengue.

January to March:
Whale watching in Samana – one of the world’s best spots to see humpback whales. There are many excursions from all the cities in the Dominican Republic to Samana peninsula to watch the whales.
February:
Carnaval Vegano – visit on Sundays the famous Dominican carnival parades in La Vega, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo.
Master of the Ocean – see the best surfers competing in Cabarete (surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing).
October/November:
Merengue Festival Puerto Plata – a weekend full of live music on the Malecon at the ocean.
