AKUREYRI - HOTEL ZONES

City Center

The city center of Akureyri is vibrant and lively with plenty of attractions, a variety of cafes and restaurants, and museums to enjoy. The main street where you will find most of these amenities is called Hafnarstræti. Staying in the center of town allows you to walk to the local restaurants, stroll the botanical gardens, explore the beautiful harbor fronts, and visit the iconic landmark church. The area is an excellent location to be in the heart of everything and is easily walkable. You will immediately notice, however, how steep some of the streets are. This town started as a small harbor village but as it started to grow, there was only really one direction it could go - uphill!

Old Town

The old town of Akureyri brings you back to the beginning of the town. The area is located just a short stroll from the town center, towards the south.

The area is a monument to the town's history and culture with a collection of old houses and buildings. Together they give visitors a glimpse into the early history of Akureyri. Some of the historic buildings still standing are the old theatre, the old school house and the hospital built in 1827. Also in the old part of town is Laxdalshús, a beautiful wooden home built in 1795. Many of the residential houses in this part of town are also quite old and make for charming surroundings for a stroll. The houses and style of architecture are what draws attention to this area. It is very convenient and walkable to many of the town center amenities.
