WHAT TO EXPECT

After hotel pickup in Ushuaia, travel to Paso Garibaldi, a mountain pass that cuts across Patagonia's Southern Andes. Drive across the Feugian Cordillera and enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Escondido, stopping at a lookout to admire this 'hidden lake.' Take in the views of the unspoiled Lake Fagnano as well.

Descend into Lago Escondido in your 4x4 vehicle with an adventure guide. Off-road among the trees in the Feugian forest, follow ancient woodcutter trails, reaching places that are impossible to reach without a 4x4.

Take in the stunning views of Lake Fagnano and then take an internal route that leads to Lake Escondido.

Listen to an introductory talk from your guide, then hop into a canoe to start paddling across the lake.

Head to Refugio de Tierra Mayor for a lakeside barbecue lunch of prime beefsteaks, choripan (traditional Argentine sausage sandwich), salad, Malbec wine, and dessert. Request a vegetarian meal ahead of time if you wish.

1: Paso Garibaldi

We are going to take the famous route 3 that runs through part of the Cordillera Fueguina, which allows us to access to the Paso Garibaldi. From here, we will see Escondido and Fagnano Lake.

2: Lago Fagnano

We will start the descent, leaving the conventional route to follow the old tracks of the woodcutters. The 4x4 trucks will help us with this expedition, reaching places where access would be impossible otherwise. We will cross forests, following paths of mud, stones, and overcoming different challenges in our way. Finally, we will arrive at Fagnano Lake, which will surprise us with its size and the incredible landscape that surrounds it.

There, we are going to have a stop at that lake where we will enjoy a delicious local asado. While the guides prepare lunch, we can make a walk around the area to explore the forest and the beavers that are part of the local landscape nowadays.

After lunch, we will continue with this adventure but this time using a route to get to Escondido Lake.

3: Lago Escondido

This lake is smaller than the other but it will still surprise us with its unique natural environment.

If we choose this tour during the summer, we can go canoeing on the Escondido Lake. First we will have an introductory talk with our guides, prepare the canoes and finally paddle around the lake for 45 minutes. We will enjoy the area landscape in a different way.

But if you choose it during winter, we will have lunch in a winter shelter and while it is being prepared, we can walk around or have fun on the sledding track. After lunch, we will visit the Tierra Mayor Winter Center, where we will have time to explore the area and make extra activities such as snowmobiles, husky sleds, skiing or ice-skating. Also, if you wish, you can stay in the warm hosteria contemplating the incredible Nevado Valley.

Places of interest: Carbajal Valley, Escondido Lake, Fagnano Lake, Historic Estancia.
Enjoy a peaceful afternoon in nature between lakes, mountains and forests. After pick you up at your hotel, we will leave the city taking the Route 3 towards West.

Along the route we will stop at panoramic points to take nice phictures. One of these stops will be at Paso Garibaldi, where we will see Escondido Lake from a panoramic viewpoint at 430 meters over the sea level.

Then, we will reach the coast of Fagnano Lake, where the historial country house is located. This place used to be a resting and supply post for those who crossed the mountain range on horseback when national route nº 3 did not yet exist..
The owners of the house will received us, there we will enjoy a snack with homemade bread and coffee. In that place we will make moderate walks, with luck we´ll see beavers.
The groups on this tour are small and departures are during afternoon.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Be ready for pickup at your hotel in Ushuaia around 8am then travel approximately 12 miles (20km) to the Nunatak Refuge, located in the Tierra Mayor Valley.

then start the trek to the Emerald Lagoon. Cross streams and peat bogs; walk through ancient forests of Coihues and Lengas while listening to commentary from your guide. Keep an eye out for beavers, condors, foxes, and other local wildlife.

Take a break on the banks of the jewel-toned Emerald Lagoon for a rest. Continue on along the tributary, which leads to the Eye of the Albino Glacier. Once you reach the glacier, strap on your crampons and climb to a scenic viewpoint, located 2,952 feet (900 meters) above sea level. Take a rest and refuel with lunch, then head back to the origination point via a different path.

Return to your Ushuaia hotel around 6:30pm.

We begin our hike in the Tierra Mayor Valley, crossing native forests and peat bogs until we reach the stunning Emerald Lagoonour first stop after about an hour.

From there, the climb starts. We leave the forest behind and ascend rocky terrain for about three hoursthe most challenging part of the hike. Surrounded by the towering Andes, the landscape is awe-inspiring.

The trail leads past striking orange cliffs to a natural viewpoint overlooking the lagoon belowa spectacular sight. From here, the final ascent begins. Depending on the season, we may need to use our hands, wearing helmets and proper gear, always guided and supported by our guide.

2: Glaciar Ojo del Albino

We made it! After four and a half hours of steady, intense hiking, were rewarded by the glaciers towering 20-meter ice wall, its green meltwater lagoon, and the stunning surroundings. This trek guarantees a payoff for the effort.

In winter, the lagoon freezes and is covered in snow, allowing us to walk right up to the ice wall. We enjoy a well-deserved lunch, great conversations, and breathtaking views before heading back the same way.

At around 6pm we pick you up at your hotel, from where we have a half hour drive to Llanos del Castor, our winter center. The excursion consists of 3 outside activities, all guided by experienced staff.

First we take you for a walk with snowshoeing over a frozen peat bog. The snowshoeing comes in very handy when there's a lot of snow, it provides you from sinking away in it. The guide will provide you with flashlights and will tell you all about your surroundings and about the beaver, an introduced animal in Tierra del Fuego.

Then you go for a ride on one of our snowmobiles. You will follow the guide on a beautiful circuit trough the snowy forest. If you've never ridden them before, don't worry! The guide will instruct you on how to handle them. The snowmobiles are tandem, but half way along the track you'll get the chance to switch, so everyone gets to drive!

Last but certainly not least, our well trained sled-dogs, guided by their 'musher', will take you on a sleigh ride. Sled through the silent, snowy woods and appreciate the patagonian winter in the best way.

Departing from the port of Ushuaia, the catamaran embarks on an unforgettable tour of the stunning landscapes and natural wonders that surround the town on all sides. As you sail out of Ushuaia harbour, enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of what is said to be the most southerly city in the world and its extraordinary setting, with jagged mountain peaks forming a backdrop. With a running commentary to provide expert information on the sights, the vessel makes its way into the Beagle Channel and passes close to the Isla de los Pajaros ('Bird Island'), home to a large number of bird species, including a large colony of cormorants.

Next the cruise sails around the Isla de los Lobos ('Island of Wolves'), a rocky outcrop where large numbers of seals and sea lions take up residence.

The catamaran offers both enclosed areas, for those preferring to stay out of the elements, and open deck space for the more adventurous, so there are plenty of opportunities for budding wildlife photographers, especially at Isla de los Lobos, where the captain steers close to shore. On the return trip to Ushuaia, the cruise passes by the remarkable Les Eclaireures End-of-the-World Lighthouse. The duration of the cruise is approximately two and a half hours.

1: Martillo Island

We set sail from the local tourist pier along the wide Ushuaia Bay until we reach the Beagle Channel through Paso Chico.

There we sail around Isla de los Pájaros (Birds Island) where we will appreciate the Fuegian avifauna observing Skuas, Black-browed Albatrosses, Steamer Ducks, Geese, Kelp Gulls and Grey Gulls; and Isla de los Lobos (Sea Lions Island) where we will be able to observe one and two hair sea lions. Both islands belong to the Bridges Archipelago.

Arriving at Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse (The Illuminators), we will be able to appreciate the colonies of Imperial Cormorants and Rock Cormorants; and also hear the story of the sinking of the SS Monte Cervantes in 1930.

Continuing, we will sail eastwards enjoying the wonderful landscapes of the channel and the mountains that surround it, there we will see Puerto Almanza on the Argentinean coast and on the Chilean coast the Puerto Williams Naval Base, and then we will arrive at Martillo Island where we will have the opportunity to see a colony of Magellanic Penguins and some specimens of Papua penguins.

There, we turn to return to Ushuaia, sailing close to the north coast of the Channel, appreciating the characteristic flora and seeing some historical sites such as Estancia Túnel and Estancia Remolino, where the semi-sunken hull of the Steamship Monte Sarmiento has been located since 1912.

Leaving the city of Ushuaia, take RN 3 towards the winter centers area. You descend in one of the centers, to equip yourself properly and thus begin the walk to the area where the beavers live. The area is the ideal habitat for these friendly animals and we will have the possibility of touring several castoreras with the security of seeing them in their wildest state.
Along the way, you will be able to observe several active castoreras, where, if you keep silent, you can see these animals with twilight habits, while knowing their history and their impact on these lands.
After the sighting, you return to the refuge where you will be waiting for an exquisite dinner and later return to the hotel.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Board a minibus at your Ushuaia hotel and head toward the Lasiphashaj River to begin your full-day Patagonian excursion. Opt to take a guided boat trip down the river and along the Beagle Channel. Listen to a safety briefing and don the provided equipment (including a life jacket, waterproof pants, and rubber boots) before launching your inflatable two-person canoe, keeping an eye out for seabirds and sea lions basking on the rocks and small islands.

The boat trip is suitable even for novices; learn paddling techniques or choose to ride in a boat with a guide. Or, if you prefer not to adventure out in the boat, you're driven straight to historic Estancia Harberton, one of the first settlements in Tierra del Fuego. While touring the homestead and perusing the on-site museum, learn about the English missionary turned sheep farmer who settled there in 1886.

After paddling for 2 hours, the canoeing group reaches Estancia Harberton to explore the homestead for a half-hour before meeting up with the rest of the group and departing for Isla Martillo (Martillo Island).

This island is famous for its penguin rookery, where Magellanic penguins breed and raise their chicks. View from the boat the thousands of breeding pairs of penguins just a few meters away from you.

Then continue your boat ride and head for Gable Island, where a lunch of baked fish, potatoes and traditional Argentine picada a sampler tray of cured meats (salami, pepperoni, ham), cheeses and olives is served. Relax on the scenic shore of the island and enjoy wine, water, soft drinks, and coffee.

After lunch, take off on a guided 90-minute hike around the island. Along the way, encounter beaver dams, lush forest, and quiet coastal pathways. You'll meet your boat back at the Beagle Channel, then travel back to Harberton and board your bus for the trip back to Ushuaia. Your day trip ends with a drop-off at your hotel.

Start your full-day excursion with pickup from your hotel by minibus. Depart Ushuaia for the Lasiphashaj River, where you have the option to take a guided trip by inflatable canoe down the river and along the Beagle Channel. Youll hear a safety briefing and learn paddling techniques, then slip on provided rubber boots, overpants and a life jacket before setting out on an exciting aquatic adventure leading to the sea.

Once youre paddling on the Beagle Channel, set your course for the Harberton port. Experienced guides help you spot wildlife, including many different species of seabirds as well as sea lions basking in the sun on small islands along the way. (Note: There is one guide per two canoes, and less experienced paddlers will have a guide in their boat with them.)

3: Estancia Harberton

Alternatively, if you don't want to paddle, enjoy a scenic drive straight to Estancia Harberton (Harberton Ranch) and tour the surroundings of one of the first settlements in Tierra del Fuego, established in 1886 by an English missionary turned sheep farmer. His descendants have created a fascinating museum that exhibits the bones of whales and other marine animals it has about 4,000 specimens in all.

4: Martillo Island

After 2 hours on the rafts, the canoeing group reaches the shore and has about 30 minutes to explore the homestead. Then everyone gathers together at the pier in Harberton to board a Zodiac for Isla Martillo (Martillo Island), also known by its native name, Isla Yécapasela.

Upon arrival you will see a penguin rookery, where you can observe, from the boat, penguins in their breeding lair. With abundant food and few predators, the Magellanic penguin colony has reached around 3,000 pairs and is growing each year.

5: Canal Beagle

Then continue your boat ride to Gable Island, where lunch is served in the afternoon with provided wine, mineral water and soft drinks. Sate your hunger with baked fish and potatoes along with picada a sampler tray of cured meats (salami, pepperoni, ham), cheeses and olives.

After an hour of relaxation, including coffee, embark on an easy, guided 1.5-hour hike around the gorgeous island, crossing over beaver dams, passing the coast and walking through a forest. When you reach the shore of the Beagle Channel, a boat takes you back to Harberton.

Come see the beautiful scenery and wildlife of the area. Leaving from the tourist pier with Southeastern direction, sailing the waters of the Bay of Ushuaia and the framework of the capital of Tierra del Fuego to our backs. Already in the middle of the Beagle Channel, we find the archipelago where the Alicia island inhabited by a large colony of shags is. Throughout the tour we will have the opportunity to observe the majestic black-browed albatross, as well as Scuas and different kind of gulls, without forgetting the funny steamer ducks or Alakush.

Our navigation continues eastwards through the channel and we now turn to the area of Les Eclaireurs Archipelago. In this archipelago is the island of Lobos. It will observe the two species of wolf's characteristics of the channel (one and two hairs). On another islands a lighthouse was built with the same name of the archipelago. It was precisely in this area that occurred in 1930 Cruise Ship sinking Mtn. Cervantes.

Always eastward then we navigate between the coasts of Port Almanza (Argentina) and Port Williams (Chile) and then enter the area of the Mackinlay Pass to go directly to the Martillo Island to watch the elegant Magellanic penguins.

The tour continues now towards the zone of Harberton Estancia where we will enjoy a tour organized by their historic facilities and completion thereof, will embark again to initiate our navigation back to Ushuaia through the winding Paso Guarani, after all this we find a small populated Puerto Almanza, whose few inhabitants are engaged in fishing for king crab and salmon breeding.

We will begin the tour at the pier of Don Eduardo Arturo Brisighelli where we'll be able to see the most important buildings in the city of Ushuaia and the Maritim Museum which is the old prison. We'll also see and learn about the Museum of the End of the World, and the important industrial area that started in 1980 and has continued to grow.

Not only will you learn about the city and structures, you'll be blown away by the landscapes and natural beauty all around you. From this point, the landscape is a combination of sea and mountains-specifically you'll have a chance to see Olivia, Five Brothers, the Fique and Tunel estancias (typical Argentine ranches), and the Encajonado River.

From here we will board a small catamaran and sail on into the middle of the Beagle Channel. The ever famous Les Exlaireurs lighthouse will come into view as the boat heads southwest towards the archipelago that houses the lighthouse. As we pass by several small islands you'll have the chance to see pieces of the ship Monte Cervantes, which was shipwrecked in 1930.

As we approach the Sea Lion Island, you'll have the rare opportunity to see the sea lions in their natural habitat. You are sure to fall in love as you watch these peculiar sea mammals sunbathing, diving into the water, and playing with each other. This is really an untouched part of the world-aside from the screeches and squeals of the sea lions you will notice complete silence as the catamaran sails around the island.

After about a half an hour, we will head towards the Bird Island to see the Magellanic Cormorants, the Imperial Cormorants Imperial, the Giant Albatrosses, Petreles Fullman, Petreles, Squas and 20 different species of sea birds. The birds have really taken over the island and it's a site to behold!
