San Ignacio (Pass by)

Departing San Ignacio Town at 8:00 am with an hour drive to the Actun Tunichil Muknal National Park. San Ignacio town was originally named El Cayo by the Spanish. On 19 October 1904, El Cayo was officially declared a town by the government of British Honduras. In the past, a creek ran between the Macal and the Mopan rivers, one mile outside of San Ignacio, going toward Benque Viejo.
Enjoy the picturesque ride while passing the different local communities and observing multicultural people in their daily lives. We can see Mennonite people riding their horse and buggy, and a different architectural house.

Teakettle (Pass by)

Teakettle Village in Belize's Cayo District was founded by British settlers in the 1800s, likely named after local teak wood, and is a mix of Creole, Mestizo, and Mayan cultures. The village is near the Belize River and is significant for its proximity to Maya archaeological sites, such as the famous Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave. While its economy is based on agriculture, recent tourism infrastructure improvements, including an ATM Facilitation Center, mark a focus on developing its tourism potential.

1: Atm Cave Belize (actun Tunichil Muknal)

Archaeotours at Actun Tunichil Muknal activities were envisioned by Dr. Rafael Guerra as a way to enhance the visitors experience beyond the mainstream tour information. Dr. Guerra is the only tour guide who is also a professional archaeologist. These expeditions came from the realization that a percentage of the tourist population wants a bit more than just the Cacoethes loquendi of tours. This type of activity allows visitors to inquire more about the archaeological processes in the cave of archaeological knowledge building. We start our adventure with a 35-minute hike through the forest, crossing the Roaring River 3 times to get to the cave entrance. While hiking through the Jungle, Dr Rafael Guerra would explain local usage of the pants or start explaining about the general history of the Mayas. Before entering the cave, Dr. Rafael will go over the Safety of caving, instructions on how to use your equipment.

Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the Cave of the Stone Sepulchre for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life.

Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place.
This is the final resting place of Crystal Maiden, an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.

2: Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve

Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the Crystal Maiden.
We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides.

We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio.

Difficulty level: Moderate (involved some easy swimming and life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, who will also be escorted by our highly trained guide).

WHAT TO EXPECT

ATM Cave is located within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. It's located approximately one hour drive south east of San Ignacio Town in the Teakettle Village. A thirty minute hike through jungle trails and river crossings will bring you to the entrance of the cave. A short swim, approximately 15 feet allows access to Xibalba the Maya underworld. From here you will be guided by your headlamp, navigating your way through the cave to the main plaza, where burial chambers can be found. Along the way you will learn about the sacrificial ceremonies that took place in this sacred place thousands of years ago. Intact calcified remains, ancient artifacts and altars where Maya leaders would make blood offerings, tell the story of what once took place. WHAT TO EXPECT

This full-day adventure begins with a pickup at your San Ignacio hotel. From there, drive 45 minutes to a turnoff at Teakettle Village, then another 30 minutes along a dirt road to reach the Tapir Nature Reserve.

During a flat, 45-minute hike through the tropical reserve, you'll encounter many native plant species and wade across the Roaring River three different times. At the entrance to the cave, you'll receive a safety briefing, and gear up with hardhats and headlamps. Enjoy a picnic lunch here either before or after exploring the cave, depending on what time your tour arrives.

Your caving adventure will begin with a quick, refreshing swim across a pool of water at the hourglass-shaped cave entrance. Just a few minutes into the darkened depths, youll approach the Breakdown the most challenging part of the adventure where you will wade, swim, and scramble through rocky passages and squeeze through some tight crevices. Your guide will instruct the group how to safely navigate challenging areas.

While passing through various chambers, stop to admire massive stalactite and stalagmite formations created by thousands of years of water passing through the cave. Light from your headlamp will illuminate shimmering columns and dripping formations that resemble waterfalls and chandeliers.

To reach the caves highlight, climb up a stone platform to an expansive chamber where archaeologists discovered a treasure trove of ceremonial Mayan pottery and the remains of more than a dozen victims of human sacrifice. Most of these artifacts remain exactly where they were discovered, allowing you to get an amazingly up-close view.

For the grand finale, climb a ladder into the uppermost chamber of the cavern, where you can marvel at the famous Crystal Maiden a complete human skeleton covered in a crystalline substance caused by natural calcification.

After spelunking your way back out of the cave, youll emerge into the sunlight and the cool water of the Roaring River, then prepare for the return hike and drive back to San Ignacio.

It will take us an hour to drive to the parking lot. Your experienced guide leads your group on an easy 35-minute hike to the cave entrance. Walk along the bank of the Roaring River, which youll cross three times before arriving at the cave entrance. To prepare your group for entering the cave, your guide provides a historical overview and a safety briefing. The water passage allows you to splash and play as you wade through the water, which may come up to your ankles, knees, waist, and even necksometimes requiring you to swim. At one point, youll climb up to a ledge to enter one of the most attractive parts of the cave, where archeologists have recorded more than 1,000 pieces of pottery and 19 human sacrifices. To explore this chamber, you must remove your shoes to protect the natural surroundings, including impressive formations like rock columns, stalactites, stalagmites, citrines, and flowstones. Your guide will share fascinating details about ancient Mayan rituals and ceremonies that once occurred deep under the earth.

Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave of the Stone Sepulchre was first discovered in 1989. Located in the Tapir Mountain Reserve of the Cayo District near the village of Roaring Creek, this popular cave is rated as the #1 cave in Central America by National Geographic and listed as one of the top things to do in Belize.
The ATM Cave is known to have been used by the Mayas for ceremonial purposes during the Classic Period. Most of the ceremonies and/or rituals were carried out at the entrance of the cave. The interior of the cave was considered to be more sacred for its proximity to the Mayan rain God, Chaak. Towards the end of the Classic Period, it is believed that the rituals moved deeper into the cave as a result of drought, thus believed to contribute to the collapse of the Mayan Civilization.
The natural geological wonder of crystalline stalactites and stalagmites formations are not the only remarkable thing about the ATM. This 5-kilometer-long museum is filled with ancient Mayan artefacts and holds over 14 human skeletal remains of men, women and children.

San Antonio Village locally known as Osh Multun Kakab is a community of 3,500 people most of which share Mayan roots. The village currently practices subsistence agriculture, most farmers in the area grow crops such as peanuts, corn, squash, and beans, much like their ancestors, and sell their products at the San Ignacio market or local restaurants. A local Womens Group made up of nine Mayan women formed the San Antonio Womens Co-op, to support and empower women and youths of San Antonio by preserving culture and traditional arts and crafts. The women started the cooperative to find a way to earn an income, learn new skills, and share their traditional knowledge not only with the younger generation but also with visitors looking to know more about the Mayan world. This tour offers an Authentic cultural experience, from the women dressed in their traditional and colorful clothing to griding their corn using the tools of the ancient Maya, true to their heritage.

Located in San Ignacio Town, Ajaw Chocolate takes visitors back to the time of the ancient Maya when chocolate was served only to the elite. When we hear chocolate today, we think about rectangular chocolate bars or even triangular or heart-shaped pieces. However, the origin of chocolate stems from seeds found in a green, yellow, orange, red, purple, or maroon ellipse-shaped fruit (Cacao) that had to be fermented, ground, and made into a paste for tea. Big Rock Falls is a hidden gem located in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve flowing over the Privassion Creek. It is a large cenote surrounded by big rocks and a small pool at the bottom. It takes about 1 ½ hr from San Ignacio Town to the 150 FT waterfall. Upon reaching, there is a trail of about 300 yards and 130 FT down to meet the valley. You will be welcomed by the roar of the cascading waterfall and cool mist and captivated by this secret paradise natural beauty.
This tour is for both adventure seekers and relaxation lovers. You can climb boulders and plunge into the pool below or relax under the water fall and enjoy a water massage.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This archaeological site is about one hour from San Ignacio and requires about four hours from beginning to end. The drive to the cave is very scenic, passing through a few Maya Villages along the way. It is only accessible by canoe and requires minimal physical activity as you glide along gently. Formations of stalactites and stalagmites found inside are remarkable. Evidence of use by the Maya exists on ten ledges within the first kilometer of passage. Pottery shards indicate use between the Early Classic (200 to 600 AD) to the Late Classic (600 to 900 AD) periods. The remains of at least 28 humans have been found within the cave. This tour is slow paced, educational, and fun for all ages.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This tour departs San Ignacio at 8:30 AM, driving one hour and thirty minutes toward the east then south of Belize . Arriving to the park the guides will provide you with a tube, then you will hike through the jungle along the river bank. There are several starting points; the most popular is after a 45 min walk which is located in between two cave entrances. You have a choice of jumping in or lowering yourself into the water. The tubing adventure is two caves if you do the 45 min walk, if you do a shorter hike of half an hour then you end doing one cave. The first cave is just an easy float through the mountain you just sit back and relax as the guide interprets the Mayan culture and believes. After floating down the first cave we end between to cave entrances again were we can stop for a swim, and get ready for the last caving adventure. The last cave has some rapids that add to the adventure, and there are also a couple areas where you can get out and explore. At the end of the last cave we end up floating down the river ending where we started hiking. Cave tubing is for those who want to have an easy relaxing and fun day.

The session can take up to an hour or more. We will guide you before we start taking pictures to ensure all photos taken are perfect. We want to make sure you're happy with each photo. During the session, all pictures will be reviewed to make sure they are perfect before we start working on them.

Departing from San Ignacio, youll journey deep into the jungles of Belize to the Chiquibul Forest Reserve home to one of the largest Mayan sites in the country. We offer free pick up for hotels within San Ignacio town limits. For hotels out of town, can pick up for an additional surcharge.

1: The Maya Ruins of Caracol

Largest Maya site in Belize.

2 hours -Admission Ticket Included

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve (Pass by)

Enroute to Caracol Maya site you will be driving by the Mountain Pine Ridge while having the chance of spotting flora and fauna typical to this region.

2: Rio On Pools

After enjoying touring around the Maya site and enjoying a delicious packed lunch, you will have the option of choosing either between the Rio On Pools or Big Rock for a quick swim in the cooling water holes.
