WHAT TO EXPECT

We walk through exuberant tropical vegetation: tree fern, huge trees with the mountain whistling as a musical background. The view clears and the vegetation changes as you arrive above the valley of desolation. No doubt, something is happening here ... So we go down: the earth seems to be alive, the water is boiling and it smokes everywhere, the colors are surprising. A bath in natural saunas is offered to us, before discovering the largest bubbling lake in the world where the water temperature is around 80 ° C. Then we descend from the valley of desolation to reach the parking lot.

WHAT TO EXPECT

It is a canyoning descent in a virgin environment in the heart of the tropical forest. After five minutes of walking, we reach the start of the canyon where we meet a succession of 7 abseils (maximum 10 meters), jumps (maximum 4 meters and never compulsory), slides and swimming in natural pools where we will cross hot and sulfur springs ... The return walk is about 30 minutes in the heart of the tropical forest. My favorite office for canyoning in dominica ;-)

This trip is considered a full-day tour (usually). It is a 6-8 hour guided hike to the 2nd largest but hottest boiling lake in the world. WHAT TO EXPECT

Enjoy pickup at your hotel in Roseau. Meet your local guide, climb aboard the open-air, off-road vehicle and set out to explore the island.

Roll through the island's capital city, listening to your guide's commentary about the cultures, traditions and history of Roseau. Stop at the Botanical Gardens to meet the country's National Parrot, the Sisserou.

Relax and enjoy the ride as your jeep climbs through the mountains to the renowned Wotten Waven Sulphur Springs. Listen as your guide points out the remnants of the island's volcanic activity and the dozens of sulphur-heated springs.

Continue to Laudat, home to the Ti Tou Gorge. Hop out of the jeep to venture into the gorge and take a dip in the pristine rock pool. Get views of a hidden waterfall. Relaxed and cooled off, jump back in the jeep for the return trip to Roseau.

The Gorge is approximately 15-25ft deep and it is an approximate 3 minute swim upstream to a small waterfall. You will have a short rest stop on a natural water carved ledge whilst your guide narrates the scene that was filmed within the Gorge for Pirates of the Caribbean II. Upon your guides' queue you will swim further up into the Gorge and get a chance to climb out of the water and jump back into the deepest part and proceed to swim out. Once out and dried, return to your truck for a sampling of the BEST rum punch on island, water and soda are also available.

Old Market Square (Pass by)

A pass through of the old market square where all activities were held including the sale of slaves, punishment of slaves, sale of food and now the sale and showcasing of arts and craft work.

The Old Mill Cultural Centre (Pass by)

The Old Mill Cultural Centre was initially used for sugar and rum production until the collapse of the Dominica sugar industry. In 1964, the estate was sold to the Government of Dominica. By 1976, a portion of the mill was allocated to the National Arts Council, which transformed it into a cultural centre with the help of a grant from the British Development Division.

DCP Successors Limited (Pass by)

Dominica Coconut Products, started in the 1960s by Phillip Nassief, has evolved over the years and operates under the name DCP Colgate-Palmolive Company. It has become a cornerstone of the Caribbean soap manufacturing industry and significantly contributes to Dominicas economy and regional trade.

Macoucherie Estate Distillery (Pass by)

Located in Salisbury just off of the main west coast highway, this estate has a history dating back to pre-war years, Dominica's major rum distillery has seen up and downs.

The Macoucherie Estate has been in the Shillingford family for several generations and is now the only (official) distillery on the island to produce rum from local cane. Not any cane however is up to the job - Macoucherie uses only that grown on its estate.

Producing 10,000 gallons annually, and up to four types of bottled rum, it's a large operation. But the processes are essentially the same as that of the small-scale operation producing moonshine.

2: Fort Shirley

Fort Shirley is part of the Cabrits National Park in the north of Dominica and can be considered Dominicas most important historic site and was the scene of the famous revolt of the 8th West India Regiment in 1802.
The British undertook most of the construction of the Fort but the French made significant additions during their occupation of Dominica from 1778 1784. Together they amassed a garrison comprising one fort, seven gun batteries, seven cisterns, powder magazines, ordnance storehouses, bakeries, iron forge, barracks and other officers quarters to house and provide for over 600 men on regular duty along with their support staff of artisans and slaves.
