El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse. Experience the breathtaking scenery, clear mountain rivers, and outdoor recreation opportunities year-round. El Yunque is also home to hundreds of unique plant and animal species, beautiful waterfalls, natural pools, hiking trails, camping areas, and historical sites. The forest gets its name from an Indian spirit Yuquiyu (or `Yokahu`), which means `Forest of Clouds.` Stay in nearby Rio Grande, Ceiba, Luquillo, or Humacao for easy access to this natural wonder!
