2: The Plaza Central Park

In Antigua Guatemala, you will feel that you go back in time, observe and contemplate the majesty of the Water Volcano looming in the background of the city, and the old cobbled streets, and the more than 500 years of architecture. We begin our walking tour from the Central Park of the Plaza de Antigua Guatemala, which is the center of the city, also surrounded by the most important buildings.

3: San José Cathedral Antigua

Is a Roman Catholic church in Antigua Guatemala. The original church was built around 1541 but suffered several earthquakes throughout its history, and the first church building was demolished in 1669. The cathedral was rebuilt and consecrated in 1680. By 1743 the cathedral was one of the largest in Central America. However, the devastating 1773 Guatemala earthquake seriously damaged much of the building, though the two towers at the front remained largely intact. These have undergone restoration work, and the cathedral has been partly rebuilt.

We visit a local coffee plantation located in the nearby city of Jocotenango. From the office you will follow a local guide on about a 15 minute ride to the coffee plantation La Azotea. Once at La Azotea you will receive a in depth bilingual tour from the plantations guide, you will be able to see various process of the coffee producing, making, and packaging that goes to serve a good cup of JOE. The coffee tour lasts about 1 hour once finished you will walk around with our local guide.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Depart from a central meeting point in Antigua around 9:00am. Youll head up toward the town of Santa Maria de Jesus, located at the base of Volcan de Agua volcano at 6,790 feet (2,070 meters).

Spend some time wandering this laid-back hamlet, including a stop at its miniscule local market and a trip through the town square. Youll continue the trip by returning back down to Antigua, crossing through the city center and back up into the hills toward the small village of El Hato.

Upon arriving in El Hato, take a short stroll up the path to Earth Lodge, a local eco-resort where you can kick back in a hammock or grab a snack as you enjoy views of the valley down below and multiple volcanoes off in the distance.

As you descend back down make one last stop at Cerro de la Cruz, offering a scenic overlook with Antigua down below. Youll return back to your starting point at the end of the trip.

We will stop at a local Chocolate Factory in this colorful little town at the foothills of the Agua Volcano, During this stop we will also visit a local wine shop which sells wines made out of a local fruit named Nispero.

3: San Pedro Las Huertas

Here we park by the Plaza and visit a local jade shop. At the factory we are shown the processes it takes to turn raw Jade rocks and convert them into fine jewelry. A small shop is located at the factory where we can see a selection of finished products such as Nahuales made into necklaces, bracelets, and even keychains.

We park by the central plaza and are able to walk over and visit the first cathedral built in Central America in the year 1534. After a small walk in the plaza we arrive at the local market and while we are there we are shown how to make tortillas like the locals. Arco de Santa Catalina, also known as Santa Catalina Arch, is one of the most recognizable landmarks that can be seen in the city of Antigua Guatemala, Arco de Santa Catalina is certainly one of the most iconic ones, since it is featured everywhere when Antigua Guatemala is mentioned.

2: Convento de las Capuchinas

The Capuchinas Convent was the only convent that allowed low-income women to enter, since the other convents demanded a dowry, which meant goods or money that a woman's family contributed to the convent or religious order to which he was to belong
According to experts , some of these cells were for the nuns with better economic possibilities. At the entrance of the Tower you can see side chambers that were used as bathtubs. They are narrow rooms with a window and two small tubs.

Next to these cells there is a narrow space with a small hole where firewood was placed to heat the water. The building has a drainage system made up of individual channels installed under each cell and reaching the same storage tank.The specialist shares that due to its characteristics, this is considered one of the first apartment buildings in Latin America.

In La Antigua Guatemala only the big houses had a place where you could wash. For this reason, most of the inhabitants housewives went to public laundries.

The La Unión Tank (Tanque de La Unión), known in the past as the Plaza de San José, is one of the most representative washing places in this city. It was inaugurated on February 3, 1853. Its arches are neoclassical in style.

The most outstanding detail of this enormous church is its VIA SACRA that was built on Calle de los Pasos, so called because of the 1,322 steps that Jesus walked from the Praetorian palace to the hill of El Calvario, where he was crucified. This route is known as the Via Sacra, and the 14 stations were carried out on it.

The Hermitage of El Calvario or Ermita del Santo Calvario is a secular Catholic parish that operates in the city of Antigua Guatemala. It is one of the few religious structures that survived both the Santa Marta earthquakes in 1773 and the subsequent transfer of the capital from the Captaincy General of Guatemala, then known as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala to a new location. The parish of El Calvario has remained open to worship since its foundation on November 19, 1618 and is recognized for having been built by the holy Brother Pedro de Betancur.

The School of Christ Church is located in the city of Antigua Guatemala. The temple was founded in the hermitage of Vera Cruz in 1664 and since 1689 it was known as the Congregation of San Felipe de Neri. Due to the 1717 San Miguel earthquakes, the building was damaged, and its reconstruction was completed in 1730 under the direction of the Chief Architect Diego de Porres. After the Santa Marta earthquake in 1773, the church moved to the facilities of the parish of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, when it moved to Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción. Its façade boasts Renaissance architecture and is made of stone, like the Capuchinas church, a characteristic that differentiates it from the other temples in the town

The Plaza Mayor was the commercial, civil, religious and civic center for the city since its foundation. 2: Arco de Santa Catalina

The Santa Catalina Arch is one of the distinguishable landmarks in Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala, located on 5th Avenue North and is one of the walks visitors must do. Built in the 17th century, it originally connected the convent to a school, allowing the cloistered nuns to pass from one building to the other without going out on the street. A clock on top was added in the era of the Central American Federation, in the 1830s.

3: Centro de Formacion de la Cooperacion Espanola en La Antigua Guatemala

The Church and convent of the Society of Jesus in Antigua Guatemala is a religious complex built between 1690 and 1698. Located 1 block west from Central Plaza, once belonged to the family of the city chronicler Bernal Díaz del Castillo. It held three monastery areas and a church. There were only a maximum of 13 Jesuit priest. Today the building is part of the Spanish Cooperation Agency and with amazing gardens, corridors and galeries, it is definitely worth visiting

4: Casa Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo Church and Monastery are partially restored. It is located in the east side of the city and its history can be traced back to 1538 when the Dominicans arrived in Guatemala. It had two towers with ten bells and the monastery was filled with treasures. The entire building was destroyed in the 1773 Santa Marta earthquake. Today part of the complex have been transformed into a fine hotel and its museums exhibit exquisit colonial art pieces.

Santa Maria de Jesus (Pass by)

This tour is done in motorcycles around the Panchoy Valley of Antigua Guatemala. You can choose the vehicle that you are comfortable with or you can also choose to ride with a guide. This tour will take you first to San Cristobal el Alto. Here you will visit "El Cerro de San Cristobal" a garden to table restaurant which has magnificent aerial views of the city, volcanoes, and entire Panchoy Valley. They also have a small orchid greenhouse, organic garden, avocado trees, food and drinks to freshen up (not included).

Next stop is the indigenous village of Santa Maria de Jesus. A completely mayan village over a mile above sea level at the top of the local Agua volcano. We walk through the local plaza and market with the locals.

Camino a Hobbitenango (Pass by)

We head back down to the mountain cross the city of Antigua and go to Hobbitenango a hobbit themed place YES! ¨Lord of the Rings theme¨ place in one of the highest mountains of Antigua. We can enjoy some fresh air, wonderful views, trail hikes, snacks and drinks during our time here.

1: El Hato

The final stop is a little spot down the same mountain of El Hato, where you will take a 300 meter hike to visit Earth Lodge 50% stairs 50% trail, an avocado plantation with cabins, tree houses, food, drinks, games, amazing views, a nature trail and an incredibly relaxing environment. Once finished you will ride back down into Antigua.

This Due South Travels tour will walk a leisurely route from Iglesia de la Merced, down 5a Avenida, through Central Park. Then we will visit the cathedral ruins and head past Tanque Union Park, and end at Iglesia de San Francisco.

3: Iglesia de La Merced

Baroque architecture. Starting point at the front of the church. If you'd like to enter, please wear conservative clothing that covers to your elbows and knees, and remove any hats before entering. (You cannot enter during a mass service)

4: Tanque de la Union

Learn about this park, the medical clinic, the pila, and the ruins of Santa Clara.
