The ruins of Leon Viejo were first located by researcher Luis Cuadra Cea in 1931. Later in 1967 they were discovered by researchers from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-León), who carried out the first excavations at the site, documenting and materializing the finding. As a result of the excavations, it has been possible to learn about aspects of the architecture, urban layout and other elements of the social dynamics of León de Nagrando. As a matter of fact, the discovery of the ruins became the most important archaeological discovery of the 20th century in Nicaragua.
