Itinerary:
Day 1:
Transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the river port on the Madre de Dios River. A 30 minutes journey down the Madre de Dios River by motor canoe brings you to the riverside trailhead to Sandoval Lake Lodge. From here the trail takes you on a 2 miles walk through secondary forest, until we reach a small canal where we board canoes and are paddled. After lunch and a brief rest to avoid the early afternoon heat, we will learn about the history of the lodge and the philosophy of its founders. Then we once again board the catamaran and set off to explore the entire west end of the lake. Here, in the flooded palm forest we drift to the sounds of hundreds of Red-Bellied Macaws; this macaw species is found locally in parts of the Amazon, always living in flooded palm forests such as the beautiful palm stand at Sandoval Lake. At 500-800 birds, this flock of macaws at Sandoval Lake is currently the largest reported in the world for this highly specialized macaw. As night falls we will look for the large and extremely rare Black Caimans. We return to the lodge for dinner.
Day 2:
Today, we will get up very early to go around Sandoval Lake, which offers abundant wildlife including over 40 species of birds resident to its lake margins, like macaws and other parrots. Afterwards, we will return to the Lodge to have breakfast. Later, we will take a trip to go to observe the flora and fauna of all this beautiful Amazon of the Sandoval Lake Reserve that are impressive. We can appreciate monkeys, deer, wild boar, tapirs, spectacled bears, just to name a few. For lunch, we will return to the lodge. Afterwards, we will have some free time to rest or enjoy a refreshing swim in Lake Sandoval. Then, we will embark on a rowing canoe to cross the lake to a place where we can best appreciate a beautiful sunset over the lake. At 7 o'clock in the afternoon, we will return to the lodge for dinner and we will be waiting for the light of the moon, this is a suitable time to go observing caimans again.
Day 3:
After early breakfast the first thing we will do is board a canoe to navigate the Sandoval Lake, then walk back to the checkpoint and from there, we will continue navigating the Madre de Dios River in an outboard boat towards Puerto Maldonado. We will collect any luggage left in our office and we will move to the airport.
