Itinerary:
Day 1:
Transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the river port on the Madre de Dios River. A 30 minutes journey down the Madre de Dios River by motor canoe brings you to the riverside trailhead to Sandoval Lake Lodge. From here the trail takes you on a 2 miles walk through secondary forest, until we reach a small canal where we board canoes and are paddled. After lunch and a brief rest to avoid the early afternoon heat, we will learn about the history of the lodge and the philosophy of its founders. Then we once again board the catamaran and set off to explore the entire west end of the lake. Here, in the flooded palm forest we drift to the sounds of hundreds of Red-Bellied Macaws; this macaw species is found locally in parts of the Amazon, always living in flooded palm forests such as the beautiful palm stand at Sandoval Lake. At 500-800 birds, this flock of macaws at Sandoval Lake is currently the largest reported in the world for this highly specialized macaw. As night falls we will look for the large and extremely rare Black Caimans. We return to the lodge for dinner.
Day 2:
A pre dawn wakeup call will enable us to be on the lake for sunrise and a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters who frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. Sandoval Lake offers abundant wildlife including over 40 species of birds resident to its lake margins, and this outing should provide excellent views, of the prehistoric looking Hoatzins. After returning for a late breakfast we will hike in the deepest of wildlife. It has a great variety of flora and fauna, looking for families of mammals, reptiles, birds, monkeys, peccaries, tapirs, toucans, as well as giant trees. During this walk our expert guide will explain about medicinal plants and much more. Soon after we returned to the lodge for dinner.
Day 3:
Relax. Tours will be provided.
Day 4:
Another early awakening awaits us today as we go around Lake Sandoval, where a large number of different palm trees grow in the water creating a swamp area. This place is called Macaw Palmera (Collpa de Palmeras) and it attracts several species of macaws and other parrots to eat sawdust from their palms. Then, we go back to the country house that breakfast should be given. Later, we will take a trip to go and observe the flora and fauna of the impressive Sandoval lake reserve. We can appreciate monkeys, deer, wild boar, tapirs or spectacled bears, just to name a few. For lunch, we return to the lodge. Afterwards, we have given ourselves a free time to rest or enjoy a natural bath in the Sandoval Lake. Then, we will embark on a canoe to cross the lake to a place where we can best appreciate a beautiful sunset over the lake. At 8 o'clock in the afternoon, we return to the lodge for dinner while waiting for the moonlight, a suitable time to go see caimans again.
Day 5:
After breakfast, we will first board a canoe to navigate the Sandoval Lake and then we will walk back to the control point and from there, we will continue navigating the Madre de Dios River by a boat to Puerto Maldonado. We collect any luggage left in our office and then we go to the airport.
