Depart early in the morning for Chinchero, a small Andean Indian village located high up on the windswept plains of Anta with beautiful views overlooking the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Chinchero is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow. The village may have been an important town in Inca times. The most striking remains from this period is the massive stonewall in the main plaza, which has ten trapezoidal niches. The construction of the wall and many other ruins and agricultural terraces (which are still in use) are attributed to Inca Tupac Yupanqui who possibly used Chinchero as a kind of country resort. In the main plaza, there is an adobe colonial church, dating from the early seventeenth century, which was built upon the foundations of an Inca temple or palace. The ceiling and walls are covered in beautiful floral and religious designs. The church is open on Sundays for mass.

Wander and shop around the nice native market, which is one of the most typical and commendable ones in the region. It is still possible to observe bartering of goods, and almost always people exchange tropical goods such as fruits, coca leaves or salt for some other regional goods such as potatoes, broad beans, or ollucos. There is a market for tourists with diverse handicrafts and excellent weavings.

The site was apparently an Inca agricultural research station designed for experimenting with crops at various altitudes (some of which run down to depths of 100 meters). From Moray, you continue to Maras, which was a pre-Incan settlement that was later abandoned. Its important occupation began when the Cusquenian Incan noblemen were dispossessed of their palaces in Cuzco and had to move. They settled in other small towns such as San Sebastian and Maras. Maras also served as a stronghold during the war started by Manko Inka trying to recover his Quechua nation. Many of its houses are emblazoned with Spanish nobility coats of arms on their lintels, which indicate the importance gained by the town in colonial times. Today it is a town that languishes due to its isolation and development of modern life.

_Shared Machu Picchu on Expedition Train - Full Day

You will wake up very early in the morning for a shared transfer from your Sacred Valley hotel to the Ollanta Train Station. Note that being a shared transfer, its duration may be anywhere between 20 minutes to 1 hour, considering your hotel may be the first stop further out from the Train Station. You will board the Expedition Train to enjoy a 2-hour journey passing through lush, green fields and colorful villages in the foothills of the Andes. Final train destination is Aguas Calientes, the little town with an elevation of 6,700 ft., located at the bottom of Machu Picchu Mountain. Your tour guide will meet you at the train station and will walk with you to the bus stop (next door to the train station). A 20 minute shared bus ride takes you to the top of the mountain, where you will find the entrance to the marvelous citadel, an awe-inspiring sight, Machu Picchu.

The ruins are situated on the eastern slope of Machu Picchu in two different areas: the agricultural and the urban. The latter includes the civil sector (dwellings, canalizations), and the sacred sector (temples, mausoleums, squares, royal houses). Your shared guided tour through the citadel takes around 2 hrs. 30 mins.

PLEASE NOTE: 

- The maximum period to stay in Machu Picchu citadel is no longer than 4 hrs. At the end of the tour you will be directed to the exit door; it is forbidden to re-enter the ruins once you leave.

- The entrance of single-use plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic straws or styrofoam containers to the Machu Picchu citadel has been forbidden. We advise our passengers to bring environmentally friendly alternatives, such ascanteens or reusable water bottles (please consider that glass bottles are also restricted).

- After the tour, lunch is included at Cafe Inkaterra Machu Picchu.

Lunch at the Inkaterra Cafe: is located inside the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, in Aguas Calientes Town. To get to Inkaterra Cafe, take a bus down the mountain. Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is located within walking distance from the bus stop.

This trip consists of a Train ride of 2 hours aboard the Expedition train, followed by a shared ground transfer from Ollanta train station to your hotel in the Sacred Valley (between 20 minutes and 1 hour considering your hotel may be the last stop in the Sacred Valley).

When boarding the train you must submit your train ticket, which will be provided upon your arrival in Peru, and photo ID. In the case of minors who have no identification documents and travel with adults, PeruRail presume that all information provided by the adult is true.
If you refuse to show your identification when requested, you run the risk of landing prompted the train and / or not being loaded on the service planned to travel. From experience one of these cases, your ticket is not valid for a refund.

During this ground ride you will be descending from approximately 11,000 ft. to 7,900 ft. above sea level. Note that being a shared transfer, its duration may be anywhere between 1 hr 30 minutes to 2 hrs 15 mins, considering your hotel may be the first stop. Upon arrival to the station, you will board the Voyager Train at the Ollanta Station to enjoy a 2-hour journey passing through lush, green fields and colorful villages in the foothills of the Andes. Aguas Calientes town is small, charming and easy to stroll so walking to your hotel will be a good experience to enjoy the local flavor.
After spending the number of nights selected for your stay in Machu Picchu, start your return trip to the Sacred Valley. This trip consists of a Train ride of 2 hours aboard The Voyager train, followed by a shared ground transfer from Ollanta train station to your hotel in the Sacred Valley (between 20 minutes and 1 hour considering your hotel may be the last stop in the Sacred Valley).
