WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Chugach State Park

We will take you to the wintry wonderland of the Glen Alps just east of Anchorage where a colossal, glaciated valley awaits. After a quick introduction, or refresher, to the elements of snowshoeing, we will hit the snow-packed trail and head to South Fork Campbell Creek, draining through the heart of the valley.

After crossing the creek, we will drift in between hemlock forests and snow-covered alpine meadows, pausing to take photos of magnificent sights. We will take note of the tracks we see, and seek out wildlife like moose, snowshoe hare, and birds. Several peaks dominate the landscape for our viewing pleasure and camera lenses. This tour is an awe-inspiring, breathtaking, and thrilling experience for the adventurous soul.

Experience Suggestions: You should have a small amount of hiking experience or be in good physical condition before attempting this tour. At a minimum, you should be able to walk at least 8 miles on flat pavement, or 5 miles of uneven rolling terrain over the course of 4 hours. You should also be able to easily climb many flights of stairs over the duration of the hike. Many parts of trail are steep and hilly, placing additional stress on areas of the body not impacted by level terrain. Not recommended for those with cardiac or respiratory issues/illness. May be difficult for those with severe joint issues.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After morning pickup at your Anchorage hotel, travel along the Seward Parkway with a small group towards Portage Valley.

Your knowledgeable guide shares fascinating commentary about the wildlife of Turnagain Arm and the Chugach National Forest area. Stop at Beluga Point and Bird Point to get different vantage points on the Turnagain Arm, and look for wildlife such as moose, caribou and eagles. The Turnagain Arm is a narrow branch of the Cook Inlet, which connects to the Gulf of Alaska.

Visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a wildlife reserve located at the edge of Portage Valley. On the sprawling refuge, injured and orphaned wild animals are rehabilitated, including large Alaskan land animals like grizzly bears, wood bison, caribou, moose, musk ox and deer. View the animals up close and learn about their backstory as you walk around the large wildlife center.

Your half-day tour ends with return to your Anchorage hotel.

1: Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

We will visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The AWCC opened to the public in 1993. It is located on 140 acres at the southern edge of Turnagain Arm and the entrance to Portage Valley. The centers mission is to provide care and rehabilitation for injured and orphaned wildlife and to provide wildlife education and awareness. Animals that are unable to be released or survive in the wild are given refuge in the center's spacious habitats. Here people can safely get close, observe and photograph some of Alaska's largest land animals, including moose, bison, elk, deer, caribou, bears muskox, small mammals and birds of prey. During spring and summer, visitors can often witness the rehabilitation of orphaned baby animals of various species.

2: Beluga Point

Beluga Point, is an area that is named after the beluga whales that can be seen from the shoreline, especially during the summer months (July to August).

This area offers several natural attractions that make it a popular stop for visitors such as wildlife, breathtaking views of Turnagain Arm, a narrow waterway surrounded by mountains. The scenic backdrop of mountains and the ocean creates opportunities for stunning photography and quiet reflection. At times we can also see a phenomenon called a tidal bore, where a wall of water rushes in, reversing the flow of the river. The bore wave can be seen along Turnagain Arm, and Beluga Point is one of the spots where people gather to witness this natural event.

Turnagain Arm is a stunning fjord-like waterway located southeast of Anchorage, Alaska, known for its dramatic tides, breathtaking mountain views, and abundant wildlife. Part of Cook Inlet, it features one of the world's largest tidal ranges, creating a unique tidal bore where a wave rushes inland during high tide. Visitors often spot beluga whales, Dall sheep, and various bird species along its shores. The Seward Highway, which runs along Turnagain Arm, offers one of Alaska's most scenic drives, with views of rugged mountains and vast tidal flats.

We will visit either Rendezvous Mile High Ridgeline, two of the best ridgelines in the entire Chugach State Park. They feature both alpine scenes and 360 views of the Anchorage Bowl. We'll determine which location we visit based on weather and group ability the day of the hike.

Ridgeline trekking is an incredibly unique way to see the landscape. While the ascent can be tough, once you arrive at the top, it is truly remarkable. You can see forever! On a clear day, we can even see Mt. Denali hundreds of miles away! Plus, the terrain can be fairly flat, making the trekking a truly enjoyable experience. During the tour, we may see moose, bear, Dall sheep, mountain goats, and a variety of small mammals like arctic squirrels and marmots. There are also plenty of birds to gaze at like bald eagles, thrushes, chickadees, and jays. This is one of our favorite ways to hike Alaska and the Chugach State Park.

Experience Suggestions: You should have a small amount of hiking experience before attempting this hike, or, be in good physical condition. At a minimum, you should be able to walk at least 8 miles on flat pavement, or 5 miles of uneven rolling terrain over the course of 4 hours. You should also be able to easily climb about 150 flights of stairs over the duration of the hike. Many parts of trail are steep and hilly, placing additional stress on areas of the body not impacted by level terrain. Not recommended for those with cardiac or respiratory issues/illness. May be difficult for those with severe joint issues.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Meet your guide in Downtown Anchorage prior to your morning start time. Learn about Alaskas rich cultural heritage from your guide as you make your way to your first stop at Ship Creek, where you can watch salmon running upstream for much of the year.

Pass by important Anchorage landmarks like Earthquake Park and Lake Hood on your way to your next stop, Alaska Wild Berry Products. Watch a 20-foot tall (6 meter) chocolate waterfall tumble toward the ground.

The aurora borealis is one of the most amazing natural wonders this world has to offer. Join us on a quest to view and photograph the northern lights in and around the Anchorage area. We will use our luxury tour vehicle as a base camp as well as a state of the art portable winter shelter complete with heater, chairs, hot drinks and snacks. We use modern technology to forecast both the space and earth weather each night. The tour only operates on nights that have a reasonable expectation for the lights to be visible. While we cannot guarantee you will see the aurora, if we do operate the tour we have over a 90% success rate of seeing the northern lights. You only pay if we operate the tour. WHAT TO EXPECT
Youll begin your adventure with an introduction to your guide/pilot. A overview of the days activities will include a safety briefing, discussion on best bear viewing practices, and a review of traveler gear. A spectacular departure over downtown Anchorage will begin your approximate 1 hour flight to our bear viewing locations. Enroute youll likely see mountains, glaciers, and wildlife while capturing great photos and video from your window seat. Youll have two-way communication with your pilot and fellow passengers during your flight getting to know each other and learning about Alaska.

After a thrilling remote landing near the bears, youll literally spend hours in the National Park roaming amongst these amazing animals. Your guide will ensure the best up close bear watching opportunities always considering your safety. Youll see bears playing, teaching their cubs, eating clams, resting and even mating. Youll walk and hike through the tundra, grassy meadows, and along rivers during this once in a lifetime experience.

Your adventure will continue on a secluded beach with an excellent shore side picnic lunch. WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Flattop Mountain Trail

This is the perfect tour if you are looking to go on an easy hike, learn about Alaskas vegetation and animal populations, and see one on the Chugach State Parks most photogenic alpine valleys. Well start by meandering through hemlock forests scarred by thrashing leeward winds from the Turnagain Arm. Snowshoe Hares make their homes here attracting the rare lynx living in the area. Wild geraniums, bluebells, and forget-me-nots pop up In June and blissful blueberries, funky fungi, and changing colors tell us when summer is coming to a close.

The flora and fauna of the Glen Alps tell us a story of an ecosystem living in harmony just outside of Anchorage. Moose and bear birth their young in spring and mate during the fall months. They travel through the mountains and valley in search of their favorite browse, providing ample opportunity for wildlife viewing and photography.

Both our launch and end locations are wheelchair accessible. However, please note that our vehicle does not have a ramp for wheelchair access. Our rear step is low to the ground, allowing easy access to the back bench seats. For safety, passengers must be able to transfer to the back bench seats independently, and any wheelchair must be collapsible for storage purposes. Meeting place is at the EAST END of Tudor Elementary property. Meet at the PARKING LOT EXIT. This is on the side of the school adjacent to an open field. Meet by the stop sign. Guide will have a yellow Hi-vis vest and clipboard. Starting August 12, please park on Cache Dr, NOT in the parking lot.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Whaling Wall

Travelers will be able to see the Whaling Wall, a huge mural depicting Alaskan marine wildlife, and will learn interesting facts about the mural. This is just one of the many art stops along the tour route. This is also the spot where we stop for coffee.

2: Anchorage Museum

The tour will pass along the south side of the Anchorage Museum, touring several works of public art that are there. These include an abstract sculpture, tile mosaic, and a graffiti style mural. No museum entrance or admission provided.

3: Tony Knowles Coastal Trail

After seeing many works of public art in downtown, the tour makes it's way down to the Coastal Trail bike path. From there, you can see stunning views of Cook Inlet, Lake Clark National Park, Sleeping Lady Mountain, and even Denali (on a clear day).

4: Chester Creek Greenbelt

The Chester Creek Greenbelt is our link from Downtown to the UAA campus, and includes stops at public art along the way. The area has dense birch and spruce forest, and moose and bear are regularly seen (no promises, though!)

5: Campbell Creek Greenbelt

Our tour starts and ends with Campbell Creek Greenbelt. The trail here offers stunning views of the Chugach Mountains as well as spruce and birch forest.

The tour skirts the APU campus. Travelers are free to check out the art galleries there after the tour is over!
