WHAT TO EXPECT

Make your own way to the kayak rental facility near the intersection of the Truckee River with Lake Tahoe. The staff outfits you with all the necessary kayaking equipment, including a sit-on-top-style kayak built for one person.

You can choose to paddle out on the lake in any direction. Lake Tahoe is one of the deepest lakes in the United States and the largest alpine lake in North America, measuring 12 miles (19 km) across and many more miles long. It is recommended that you stay close to shore to avoid the motorboats and jet skiers that zip around the lake.

Take in the granite boulders and towering sugar pines that ring the lake, then return to your starting point on the Truckee River to end your 3-hour rental.
10AM-1:00PM Lake Tahoe is a year-round playground offering incredible hiking, boating, and kayaking through most of the summer and some of the best skiing in North America in the winter. Ringed by massive mountains and beautiful pine forest, the lake is the largest alpine lake in North America and one of the deepest in the United States. Every year, thousand of visitors and residents alike flock to the lake to escape the searing heat of the California Central Valley and to enjoy the abundance of incredible water sports and outdoor activities the area offers.

Your three hour kayak rental will start at a local kayak facility near the mouth of the Truckee River, Lake Tahoe's only outlet, where you have the option to paddle out in whatever direction you feel like. The lake is 12 miles across and dozens of miles long, and although you may be tempted, you'll want to stay close to the shore and avoid trying to cross among the motorboats and jet skiers cruising the area. Your single-person kayak will keep you afloat among the gentle waves and light wind that cross the lake in the early morning and afternoon as you float by the granite boulders and massive sugar pines that ring the lake. The time will pass quickly as you work your muscles and push yourself throughout the three hours until you return to the river to disembark for your next adventure - unless you decide to upgrade to a full day rental!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Make your way to the local outfitters office near the main marina in Tahoe City, getting an early start to avoid the summer crowds for a peaceful mountain morning on the lake. Get equipped with a kayak, paddle, and life vest, and receive a brief safety orientation before launching out onto the calm waters.

As you paddle through the clear, snow-fed lake, soak up the relaxed atmosphere of Tahoe in the summer, which has a distinctly different vibe from the winter ski season. Learn how the relaxed culture and less developed landscape of the west shore differs from the high-rise hotels and casinos of the Nevada shoreline while your guide shares local insight into the history of recreation on the lake.

Learn about the early settlers who built rustic lakeside cabins, and hear tales from California history like the legendary Donner Partys tragic winter, Teddy Roosevelts stalled efforts to turn the area into national parkland, and stories of life along the nearby Truckee River. After about 2.5 hours cruising along the shoreline in your kayak, return to the marina midday a perfect time to enjoy lunch at one of Tahoe Citys many restaurants (own expense).

Leave Tahoe City at 9:00 am and glide across water so clear that you can see the bottom. Kayak past the historic homes and beautiful scenery of the West Shore. Our knowledgeable guides will tell you stories about Lake Tahoe and some of the West Shores landmarks as you paddle. The tour will return to Tahoe City around 11:45am.
