At the waterfall, one of the largest in the United States, take an elevator 175 feet (53 meters) down into Niagara Gorge. The boat starts off at a calm part of the Niagara River, near the Rainbow Bridge, and takes its passengers past the American and Bridal Veil Falls, then into the dense mist of spray inside the curve of the Horseshoe Falls, also known as the Canadian Falls. (Seasonal, May through October).

An elevator takes you from the area between the American and Canadian Falls down to the level of the Niagara River at the base of the American Falls. The Niagara River runs north from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, forming part of the border between the Province of Ontario in Canada and the State of New York in the U.S. Beginning from Grand Island, N.Y., climb aboard a single or double kayak and paddle along a relatively easy route that includes the scenic sights and abundant wildlife of the Upper Niagara River islands.

Pass the River Lea Farmhouse, a Victorian farmhouse located in the Beaver Island State Park where President Grover Cleveland worked at his first job for his uncle.

Look for a variety of waterbirds on Motor Island, including egrets, great blue herons and Caspian terns, among others. Then theres Strawberry Island with its deep lagoon, its one of the most significant aquatic ecosystems in the Great Lakes region.

Enjoy being out on the water and learn a thing or two about the history of the area. Tour includes a light snack, water, and all the necessary equipment.

The Niagara River follows a 36 mile course flowing first around Grand Island before cascading over the brink of Niagara Falls more than 15 miles downstream. It is at the southern tip of Grand Island that your kayak tour begins. Your guide will lead you along some of the very same canoe trails that were used by the early settlers of the Niagara frontier. As you paddle through the tranquil river waters you will learn about the geology, history and ecology of the Niagara River. You will get to visit the restored East River Marsh, an active heron rookery on Motor Island and you will even land on Strawberry Island where you may see the Bald Eagles that are in residence. Birdlife abounds and it is likely that you will encounter great blue herons, great egrets, black crowned night herons, ospreys and spotted sandpipers as well as a variety of gulls and terns so plan on bringing a camera.

After meeting your guide you will be briefed on the days trip and the potential highlights.
You will be given a choice of either a single or tandem kayak that can be adjusted to fit you comfortably. All paddlers will be required to wear a lifejacket equipped with a whistle while out on the river.

Experience fun the way Americans did 100 years ago at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum in North Tonawanda, New York just 25 minutes from Niagara Falls, NY.

The museum is one of the last existing wooden carousel complexes in the US. Today, the building contains a large carving shop, a woodworking shop, a paint shop, a storage area, an upholstery shop, a machine shop and a roundhouse where carousels were assembled and tested before shipping. The complex is a series of seven interconnected structures which once housed all of the manufacturing components of the Allan Herschell Company. It is listed on both the New York State and National Registers of Historic Sites.

Inside, enjoy everything from glittering carousels to scholarly archives.

Theres a historic carousel 40 feet in diameter with 36 hand-carved horses and over 580 lights and a small, 1940s aluminum carousel known as the Kiddie Carousel, located in the Childrens Gallery. Over the summer, check out the Kiddieland Testing Park Exhibit, featuring four refurbished kiddie rides from the factorys postwar baby boom era, as well as a picnic pavilion and admissions house.

Theres an Artizan-style D band organ. The Wurlitzer Music Roll Department is a one-of-a-kind exhibit that shows how carousel music was made. In the wood-carving shop, see how blocks of wood were transformed into horses for the carousels. And the Lockman Collection displays the changes of carousel animals over a period of 60 years.

Before leaving, be sure to stop by the gift shop for carousel-inspired collectibles and toys. Also, purchase tickets, memberships, music rolls and more.

1: Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum

The Herschell companies in North Tonawanda (located just 20 minutes from Niagara Falls, New York) produced over 3,000 hand-carved, wooden carousels. Many of their carousels were portable with simply carved horses, meant to be used by traveling carnivals. They were shipped all over the country. Today 71 of the 148 antique, hand-carved wooden carousels still in existence in the United States and Canada were made by Herschell. In the 1930s, the company started making small metal amusement rides for children and promoting a 'kiddieland' package to small businesses.

During a visit, view exhibits, watch a wood carving demonstration, listen to the magical sounds of a band organ, view the music roll-making shop, ride a 1916, hand-carved carousel, ride four kiddie rides (in the summer), and shop in an extensive gift shop.

After this comes the serious fun; after poncho-ing up yet again, you will walk on a wooden deck right under the Bridal Veil falls, which is rebuilt every year. This is the only place where you can actually touch the water from the falls. Not only is the feel of the water cooling, but the view is indescribable! But theres more! Youll then make your way to the hurricane deck where you can experience 60,000 gallons of water thundering down over you (if you wish)!

2: Cave of the Winds

The Cave of the Winds trip takes you closer to the waters of Niagara Falls than you thought possible. First you get to enjoy the exciting new indoor multimedia experience, the World Changed Here Pavilion. You get to see and experience a fun educational 8-minute movie that immerses you back in time where everything with the Falls began. Before you get to ride down the elevator 175 feet (53 meters) deep into the Niagara Gorge you will be given souvenir poncho. (In the past the gave sandals for during the experience now as stated on their website they have changed that policy. As we work to ensure that we are doing our part to care for the Earth, we have phased out distribution of the famous Cave of the Winds sandals. Please bring footwear that can get wet.) After you descend down the elevator you will then follow a series of wooden walkways to the famous Hurricane Deck. As you stand at the railing, you are a mere 20 feet (6 meters) from the billowing torrents of Bridal Veil Falls.

3: Niagara Falls Observation Tower

Extending out dramatically over Niagara Gorge, the architectural wonder of the Niagara Falls USA Prospect Point Observation Tower affords unobstructed views of the wild cascades of Niagara Falls, as well as the raging whitewater below. Elevators at the Observation Tower provide access to the base of the gorge and the boarding site for the Maid of the Mist boat tour. For a multi-sensory view of the American Falls, visitors can go to the base of the gorge and climb a series of stairs to the Crow's Nest, where the views come with complimentary air conditioning and blasts of misty Niagara spray. Niagara Falls USA Observation Tower provides the only panoramic view of all three Niagara Falls, including the American Falls. Bird watching is also a popular pastime at the Niagara Falls Observation Tower. Bird enthusiasts have the opportunity to spot peregrine falcons, bald eagles and the many different gull species present in the Niagara Gorge.

5: Bridal Veil Falls

The Bridal Veil is the smallest falls among the three waterfalls, that together known as the great Niagara Falls. The Bridal Veil Falls is in the US side located right to the American Falls separated by Luna Island. The Goat Island in the Canadian side separates it from Horseshoe Falls.
The waterfall looks like a 'Bridal Veil' and thus the name Bridal Veil Falls. The Bridal Veil Falls is also known as Luna Falls and Iris Falls. The height of Bridal Veil Falls is 181 ft. Though it is a small waterfall compared to its two counterparts, it has its own specialties.

6: Luna Island

This small island between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls has an awe-inspiring view of both Falls. Handicapped Accessible: Yes
It is between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, which are two of the three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls. It is approximately 130 feet (40 m) wide (between the two falls) and 350 feet (110 m) long (extending upstream from the falls).
The original wooden bridge to the island, added in the 1800s, was replaced in the 20th century.
