1: Sage Creek Wilderness Area

We know the best way to view the park during sunset. We'll take you through the Sage Creek Wilderness area to see all types of formations, with the sunset at our backs. This makes the photography of wildlife, shapes, and shadows amazing. It's our favorite tour area, and you'll understand why.

2: Hay Butte Overlook

One of the most impressive views of the Badlands and often missed. We'll be sure to stop here for photos, and maybe even set up for a viewing of the sunset.

3: Badlands Wall

We'll set up for the beautiful night sky at a location only My XO Adventures knows. Our tour includes blankets, comfortable mats, and pillows to see as much of the sky as possible. Laying on the cozy mats, we'll see planets, shooting stars, and the Milky Way Galaxy.

Our guide will take night photos and share them with you at the end of the tour. We can even show you how to take them using your phone. Red light flashlights are provided to prevent any white light from interfering with your night vision!

We also provide a chart of the night sky showing the constellations and satellites that zoom overhead. Truly a unique experience for adults and kids. Badlands National Park offers clarity that few people in the United States enjoy. Over 7,500 stars are visible on any given night.

4: Pinnacles Overlook

Well enter Badlands National Park at the magic time just before sunset. Folding chairs will be brought out at the perfect location for viewing. After, well head to the Amphitheater for night sky viewing with telescope and watch the stars light up the sky.

5: Bigfoot Pass Overlook

Bigfoot Pass Overlook is named after Chief Bigfoot, who led his tribe while being chased by the U.S. Army through the Badlands until they reached the sight of Wounded Knee, where men, women, and children were massacred. Chief Bigfoot was known for his diplomatic skills, but sadly, that didn't save him and his tribe from genocide at the hands of the U.S. Government and Col. James Forsyth.

Bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogsyou see them often. They belong to the land more than we do.

2: Sage Creek Wilderness Area

This area is far from the crowds. No pavement, no noisejust open space and wildlife doing their thing.

Youll often see bison up close here. Theyre calm but huge. Gives you some real perspective.

Feels like the land hasnt changed in a thousand years.

3: Pinnacles Overlook

PThis is usually the first place that makes people go, Wow. And I get itit hits hard.

You can see forever out here. Layers of stone, sky, and space that make everything else feel small.

Its also one of the best spots for spotting wildlife. Weve seen bighorn sheep right below the ridge.

Its a must-stop, plain and simple.

4: Ancient Hunters Overlook

This place is easy to overlookbut it has deep roots. People hunted bison here long before roads existed.

I like to talk about what life might have been like back then. You feel the past here.

Not much to read. Not many signs. Just quiet hills and stories if youre open to hearing them.

5: Yellow Mounds Overlook

These hills look like they were painted. Bright yellows, purples, and pinks you dont expect in South Dakota.

Theyre ancient soil layers pushed to the surface. A geologists dream. A photographers too.

Its one of the most colorful stops in the whole parkand people always want to get out here.

6: Bigfoot Pass Overlook

This is a heavy place. Named after Chief Big Foot, who died at Wounded Knee.

He and his people passed through here during the dead of winter. It didnt end well.

I stop here to share the story. Not to bring the mood down, but to respect what happened.

7: Homestead Overlook

This spot looks simple, but it says a lot. Imagine showing up with a wagon and being told, This is yours.

This short trail is great for kids and adults who want to see what lived here before us.

It has fossil displays, fun signs, and it's flat enough for everyone.

9: Ben Reifel Visitor Center

If you want to learn more, this is the best place. Clean bathrooms, great exhibits, friendly rangers.

You can watch fossils being cleaned in the lab or ask real questions and get real answers.

10: Big Badlands Overlook

This is your first real whoa moment if youre coming in from Wall.

It opens up fastlayers of red, white, gold, and pink stretching for miles.

Its a great sunrise spot if you're up early. And the views are better than any screen can capture.

Even after hundreds of visits, I still pull over for this one.

11: Wall Drug

Wall Drug is weird in the best way. It started with free ice water during the Great Depression.

Now its part diner, part museum, part wild west photo shoot.

You can get a donut, sit on a jackalope, or find a pair of boots.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Delta-09 Missile Silo

From 1963 until the early 1990s, the missile silo at Delta-09 contained a fully operational Minuteman Missile, bearing a 1.2 megaton nuclear warhead. The Delta-09 missile silo was one of 150 spread across western South Dakota. In total there were 1,000 Minuteman missiles deployed from the 1960's into the early 1990's. Visitors can now tour the site daily.

The launch facility consists of a silo 12 feet in diameter and 80 feet deep made of reinforced concrete with a steel-plate liner. The door to the silo has been welded and fitted with a glass roof, and an unarmed missile placed inside. For safety reasons, tours are not conducted underground. In addition to the missile and silo, visitors will see support structures such as antennas and motion sensors.

2: Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Short stop at location of 1950'-60's Nuclear Missile Site. Small museum provides exhibits of the 'Duck and Cover' days.

During the Cold War, a vast arsenal of nuclear missiles were placed in the Great Plains. Hidden in plain sight, for thirty years 1,000 missiles were kept on constant alert; hundreds remain today. The Minuteman Missile remains an iconic weapon in the American nuclear arsenal. It holds the power to destroy civilization, but is meant as a nuclear deterrent to maintain peace and prevent war.

3: Badlands National Park

Badlands Loop Road (SD 240) is a spectacular way to see the North Unit of Badlands National Park. This two-lane paved road is wide and safe and does include viewing wildlife along the Loop Road. We drive carefully, stopping to use overlooks and pull-outs. There are over a dozen spectacular overlooks and trailheads, we stop at the best ones to explore and take photos.

4: Door Trail

A wheelchair-accessible ¼ mile boardwalk leads through a break in the Badlands Wall known as the Door to a panoramic view of the Badlands. You have the option to explore the trail. The maintained trail ends and continues onto Badlands bedrock, with yellow posts marking the primitive portion of the trail.

5: Ben Reifel Visitor Center

The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is the main facility in the North Unit of the park. You can stop by to talk with rangers, explore museum exhibits, check out the Fossil Preparation Lab, or visit the Badlands Natural History Association bookstore.

6: Fossil Exhibit Trail

The Fossil Exhibit Trail is a fully accessible boardwalk featuring fossil replicas and exhibits of extinct creatures that once lived in the area. The exhibits are tactile, so please feel free to touch.

7: Pinnacles Overlook

This view displays the expanse of the Sage Creek Wilderness area. On clear days, the Black Hills are visible on the horizon. Bison might be visible in the distance, in the valley below or the upper prairie to the northwest. This overlook is also a popular spot for Bighorn sheep to gather. This is also a lambing area for Bighorn sheep in late April to early May, so its not unusual to see lambs traversing the rocky slopes of the Badlands.

One of the worlds most well-known tourist attractions, its hard to believe Wall Drug Store got its start with something many wouldnt even turn their heads at today the promise of free ice water. But in fact, the Husteads turned free ice water into a million-dollar idea with a little determination, quick thinking and a lot of signs.

Signs with catchy jingles like Get a soda . . . Get a root beer . . . turn next corner . . . Just as near . . . To Highway 16 & 14. . . Free Ice Water. . . Wall Drug drew weary travelers into the small-town drug store to enjoy a refreshing break. Today, more than 2 million visitors a year stop at the popular roadside attraction for a meal or activity, 5 cent coffee, and ice water which is still free.

Pinnacles Overlook is one of the best locations in the Badlands. From this stunning viewpoint, you can gaze out at the breathtaking landscape of layered rock formations and jagged spires that stretch out as far as the eye can see.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower is located in northeast Wyoming. The Tower is a solitary, stump-shaped granite formation that looms 1,267 feet above the tree-lined Belle Fourche River Valley. Once hidden below the earths surface, erosion has stripped away the softer rock layers revealing the Tower.

The two-square-mile park surrounding the tower was proclaimed the nations first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. The park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. While visiting the park you are bound to see deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife. The mountains markings are the basis for Native American legend. One legend has it that a giant bear clawed the grooves into the mountainside while chasing several young Indian maidens. Known by several northern plains tribes as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site of worship for many American Indians. Devils Tower is also remembered for Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

There is time to walk the Tower Trail if you like.

This is the oldest continuing operating general store in Wyoming. Located in the little town of Aladdin (pop 15) the little store (1892) offer lots of old history in a very unique old building.

3: Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway

Spearfish Canyon offers a trip through the culture, nature and history of the Black Hills. Abundant wildlife watching opportunities are found throughout the canyon. One of the best scenic byways in America.
Older than the Grand Canyon it offers three waterfalls, 1,000 foot limestone/sandstone cliffs, four ecosystems and a flowing mountain stream. We stop at Roughlock Falls to walk the short trails and view the cascading falls. Great photo ops.

4: Bridal Veil Falls

Cascading approximately 60 feet, Bridal Veil Falls is the most accessible waterfall in the canyon. The Falls flows intensely in the spring and slows considerably in late summer and fall. it is located adjacent to a large parking lot to accommodate sightseers. An observation platform has been installed to optimal viewing and photos.

5: Roughlock Falls State Nature Area

Roughlock Falls is widely praised for its beautiful scenery and is a popular spot for its easy-to-access waterfall and surrounding nature area. 6: Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center

Old Gold and New Physics.
Located in the old gold town of Lead. Homestake visitors center is located on the edge of the open pit mine that once was the largest gold mine in the world. It is now a museum that offers exhibits of the past gold rush days and . . . the new science experience currently ongoing 4200 feet below the surface. Over 40 countries are exploring the universe for Dark Mater and Neutrinos. Interesting stuff!

From the Mickelson trailhead (we typically start north of Hill City), we spend some time preparing each rider on their bike and outlining the day's ride.

Our ride is 18mi of the Mickelson Trail, which traverses through the stunning Black Hills countryside.

The 18mi ride is all very slightly downhill and very accessible for all fitness levels. We ride the most scenic part of the Mickelson; aspen groves and birch frame the trail with meandering streams flowing along the way.

Our guide will leapfrog riders along the trail, meeting you at the end of the ride.

First we stop at the State Game Lodge and detail its history at the Summer White House for Presidents Coolidge and Eisenhower.

Then stopping at the Custer State Park Visitor Center we visit the many displays about the iconic species of the prairie, the bison.

And one more stop along the Wildlife Loop Road at the Buffalo Corrals. The new Custer State Park Bison Center brings an all-bison experience to the park's scenic drive through the southern prairie of our 71,000 acre park.

2: Wildlife Loop Road

We tour through 18 miles of open grasslands and pine-speckled hills that much of Custer State Park's wildlife calls home. Keep eyes peeled for bison, pronghorn, whitetail and mule deer, elk, coyotes, burros, prairie dogs, eagles, hawks, and a variety of birds that are rarely found together in one location. A medley of colorful wildflowers and prairie grasses surround the road, making for a picturesque drive; and the landscape changes throughout your trip, keeping you on your toes.

3: Mount Coolidge Fire Lookout Tower

Built of local stone, Mt Coolidge Fire Tower rests atop a 6,023-foot peak on the way to Blue Bell Lodge and is still used today as a fire lookout and dispatch center.
As the highest point in central Custer State Park, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views from the top of the fire tower. On a clear day, you can see the Badlands nearly 60 miles away in the east, Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse to the north and the Wildlife Loop Road to the south.

4: Stockade Lake

Stockade Lake is the largest lake in Custer State Park and is located between Mt Coolidge Lookout and the Needles Highway. It has a very scenic and serene atmospher and here we pause for a picnic lunch.

5: Needle Eye Tunnel

The Needles Highway is a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and rugged granite mountains.

The roads name comes from the needlelike granite formations that seem to pierce the horizon along the highway.

The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922.

Needles Eye Tunnel is a unique rock formation, so named for the opening created by wind, rain, freezing, and thawing. It is the most popular tunnel in the Park.

Sylvan Lake is the most popular of the may lakes in the Park.
It was created in 1891 when Theodore Reder built a dam across Sunday Gulch Creek.

It is surronded by large granite spires, huge pines and creates a unique alpine feel to the guests. I is also home to an average of 4 wedding a week during the summer season.

With the beauty of the mountains and valleys as its backdrop, this road was specifically designed with a tremendous amount of curves, including what we refer to as switchbacks, in order to limit the speed of travelers to 35 miles per hour so that they could enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills. What makes this road so unique and memorable is not just the amount of curves and the surrounding beauty, but also the architectural features found along this road. These features include wooden structures, called pigtail bridges, and one lane tunnels that were built to showcase the American patriotic symbol, Mt. Rushmore. These tunnels frame Mt. WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Mount Rushmore National Memorial

If the weather is good we go to Mt. Rushmore first for 1½ hours. There is a 14 minute video about the carving, the sculptor Gutzon Borglum, and workers. The Lincoln Borglum Museum has some great displays about Borglum, his family and his works, the mountain and machinery and the workers.

The Presidential Trail is a gradually inclining walk that goes under the faces in the rock rubble with great spots for pictures of the individual faces. If you go further there is a strenuous walk down to the Sculptors Studio (open only in the summer months) then back up to the viewing terrace.

The Avenue of Flags represents all 50 states and the territories, and their respective dates of admission to the Union. There is also a new Youth Exploration area recently opened. The large gift shop has many items.

The Carvers Café and an ice cream shop are available for refreshments. As we leave we stop for a picture at the side profile of George Washington.

2: Crazy Horse Memorial

From Mt. Rushmore we drive 30 minutes to Crazy Horse Memorial. We allow 1½ hours here, or more if we eat lunch in the Laughing Water Restaurant. This is a 3 sided sculpture which will be the largest in the world when completed.

There is a 20 minute video about the carving and the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family that are doing the work. The North American Indian Museum has items from many different Indian tribes, with 90% of the items being donated.

The gift shop has many Native made items for sale. Ziolkowskis workshop and the log home he built, filled with antiques, are available to walk through. There is a Native American Cultural Center where you can watch Natives making items for sale, as well as display items to see and touch.

There is a brass Nature Gate and a huge statue of Fighting Stallions.

3: Custer State Park

After leaving Crazy Horse we drive through the city of Custer which is the oldest town in the Black Hills, and down into Custer State Park where we drive the 18 mile Wildlife Loop Road.

In the spring there are around 1300 buffalo including newborn calves in the park. There are also antelope, deer, prairie dogs, begging burros and breath-taking scenery.

We make a comfort stop by the State Game Lodge area at Coolidge Inn Store or Custer State Park Visitor Center, then we drive back to Rapid City.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We will leave Rapid City at 8:30 am and travel to beautiful Custer State Park. Once there, you will take an open-air jeep into the park and get up close and personal with roaming buffalo and other wildlife. Lunch will be enjoyed at an exquisite local restaurant of your choosing. For the remainder of the afternoon, you can hike some of the most beautiful and rare trails in Custer State Park.

Make the very most of your time and visit the famous faces at Mount Rushmore with an expert! Take your time enjoying all that the National Monument has to offer; museums, trails, gift stores - even Thomas Jefferson's family ice-cream recipe!

Our guide will talk you through the building of the project, its place in history and a local's perspective.

2: Iron Mountain Road

Iron Mountain Road is a Black Hills experience not worth missing! This famous scenic route was built especially to compliment Mt Rushmore. Enjoy the perfectly framed tunnels facing the faces, and the pigtail bridges.

We make our way to the top of Peter Norbeck Overlook for a spectacular view of the Black Hills.

3: Sylvan Lake

Spectacular Sylvan Lake is our first stop in Custer State Park.
A must see in the hills, this is the beginning of our journey onto Needles Hwy.

4: South Dakota 87

The jewel of the Black Hills, Needles Hwy is like nothing you have very seen before. This scenic drive is cradled by the heart of the mountain range; magnificent spires and sparkling rock formations (really, the mica makes it sparkle!), this is a drive you must see.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Sheep Mountain Table Road

Sheep Mtn Table is off the beaten path - not many people get out to explore this area like some other areas in the National Park. It is located next to the famous Stronghold Table (Ghost Dance). It is found in a unique and isolated location, wedged between the North and South Units. Lots of Lakota and Homesteading history . . . and it has great views of the Badlands and distant Black Hills.

The road when dry is safe. However, Sheep Mtn Table may not be included if road is wet.

*"Sheep Mountain Table Road is a dirt road that should not be driven during or after storms. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, even in dry conditions." - National Park Service

2: Scenic

Once upon a time upcoming railroad stop - hotels, banks and bars . . . now an empty ghost town.

3: Ben Reifel Visitor Center

This is the main facility in the North Unit of the park. You can talk with rangers, explore museum exhibits, check out the Fossil Preparation Lab and there is time to visit the Badlands Natural History Association bookstore.

4: Fossil Exhibit Trail

The Fossil Exhibit Trail is a fully accessible boardwalk featuring fossil replicas and exhibits of extinct creatures that once lived in the area. Just .25 miles long the trail takes you past 75 million years of history and the animals that once inhabited this land.

5: Yellow Mounds Overlook

These strangely colored mounds are the result of an ancient sea draining away and the chemicals from decaying plants turning the soil yellow. They make for a great photo opportunity.

6: Pinnacles Overlook

This is the highest overlook on the Badlands Loop Road, and it offers some of the most panoramic views. This view displays the expanse of the Sage Creek Wilderness area from which you just came. On clear days, the Black Hills are visible on the horizon. Bison might be visible in the distance. This overlook is also a popular spot for Bighorn sheep to gather. This is also a lambing area for Bighorn sheep in late April to early May, so its not unusual to see lambs traversing the rocky slopes of the Badlands.

7: Roberts Prairie Dog Town

First we stop at the Sage Creek Overlook, looking back at the path we have just traveled . . . many think this is the best of all the Park views.

We then stop to view the largest prairie-dog town in the accessible areas of Badlands National Park. Other than the mounds of dirt where the prairie dogs have made their homes, the first thing you will likely notice is the high-pitched squeaks and noises coming from the Prairie dogs. Prairie dogs provide habitat for approximately 200 animal and plant species, so keep your eyes open for other wildlife at this pulloff.

8: Sage Creek Wilderness Area

This is a less traveled area of Badlands National Park with unusual scenery and wildlife such as bighorn sheep, bison, black-footed ferrets and prairie dogs. This area is one of the oldest in the Park and most of the badlands formations have eroded away, and the underlying Cretaceous sediments are more suitable for soil development for the grasslands. Because of this and the Sage Creek running through it, you will find wildlife. Bison, sheep, antelope, deer and more (this is the water hole). The roads are less developed but no problem for our Jeep Gladiators.
