Chateau Chantal is a winery located on the Old Mission Peninsula, only a few miles north of Traverse City, in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. The chateau sits atop one of the highest points on the Old Mission Peninsula and has views of both East and West arms of Grand Traverse Bay. The winery is a European style chateau on a 64-acre (26 ha) estate. The Chateau has a tasting room, an eleven-room bed and breakfast, and a hospitality room where cooking classes and Jazz at Sunset are hosted.

Due to 2025 construction projects guests staying on the Leelanau Peninsula are strongly encouraged to Wine Tour in Leelanau County.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Shady Lane Cellars

Tour guests can buy flights, wine by the glass, bottles or join the wine club during this fantastic stop on the tour. One of the best vineyards on Leelanau Peninsula, guest can sip, savor and taste some of the best reds and whites in the area. Red wine drinkers can sample a stellar Blaufränkisch. White drinkers sample a Muscat or Coup de Blanc-Shady Lane is an old Chicken Coup. Shady Lane is one of the few area wineries who offer a Muscat which was the first grape brought to Europe by the conquering Romans.

This is a smaller "boutique" winery only producing 7000 cases per year. Our visitors will be seeing nature, vineyards and orchards Shady Lane is not a busy road so there is no view of traffic, no close neighbors -- just vineyard and woods in the heart of Leelanau County. An outdoor patio area will provide a relaxing environment with cozy views of the adjacent vineyards.

Perched atop the highest point on the Leelanau Peninsula at the Gallagher Estate, Rove Winery is a family farm and winery focused on using estate-grown grapes to honor their rich northern Michigan legacy and Irish ancestry.

Guests from outside of downtown-

Day tours- we can sometimes pick up before tours at local area hotels, however, traffic gets heavy in the afternoon, so drop off after the day tour would be downtown Traverse City. Day tour guests are strongly encouraged to go downtown Traverse City to eat until rush-hour is over, catch an Uber or hotel shuttle later in the afternoon. Guides have dinner recommendations for guests.

Guests on the afternoon/sunset tours- Plan ahead, get downtown early via hotel shuttles/Ubers- traffic gets heavy in the afternoon. Get to the pickup point (Hardy Street Parking Structure), and we can usually drop off at local hotels/motels after the wine tour.

Guests can choose various toppers and this drink is the winery best seller. Remember... Froze' with a Red Topper!

Our tour guests will be able to purchase the only Sauvignon Blanc on Old Mission Peninsula or try the "porch pounder" which is a rare Pinot Noir Riesling blend. Tour guests can also purchase a customizable tasting of various wines and then head to the deck for an amazing photo opportunity.

5: Bowers Harbor Vineyards

Bowers Harbor Vineyards stablished in 1991 is one of the original wineries in the area. Initially a horse farm, the estate now boasts 20 acres of vinifera vines. An inviting tasting room is a former horse stable, and a friendly staff will welcome and introduce our tour guests to an extensive selections of top wines by the glass, bottle or by the flight.

Bowers Harbor Vineyards is nicknamed the "dog winery" and guests might see various dogs at the winery.

Bowers Harbor grows Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The real show stopper is the Pinot Secco (bubbly Pinot Grigio) and a Pinot Secco Rose (Magic Mike's pick).

Grand Traverse Bay (Pass by)

Grand Traverse Bay is an arm of Lake Michigan. The bay is separated from the rest of Lake Michigan by the Leelanau Peninsula. The bay is some 32 miles long, ranges from 7 to 10 miles wide, and up to 620 feet deep in spots. It is the second-largest bay of Lake Michigan, behind Green Bay.

Grand Traverse Bay earned its name from 18th-century French voyageurs who made "la grande traverse" or a long trek or crossing, across the mouth of bay.

The most famous feature of the Grand Traverse Bay is the division into East and West arms by the Old Mission Peninsula.

During this tour, on the way from Traverse City to Hawthorne Vineyards, our tour guests will see stunning views of the East Bay. Tour guests will be driven right along the shoreline at times. One of the best vineyards in Traverse City, quite the location to pop the question! Tour guest can sip, savor and taste some of the best reds and whites on the peninsula. Red wine drinkers can purchase a glass of the Merlot / Cab Franc blend and for the white drinkers try the Auxerrois or Dry Riesling. Guests can get a popcorn flight or a charcuterie board. One of the newest up and coming wineries on Old Mission Peninsula would make quite a memorable spot to propose.

The Hawthorne Vineyards site is arguably the most secluded Old Mission Peninsula tasting room site. The tasting room location is on a high bluff with views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Our visitors will be seeing nature no view of traffic, no close neighbors -- just vineyard, woods, water and good memories.

4: Bowers Harbor Vineyards

Bowers Harbor Vineyards stablished in 1991 is one of the original wineries in the area. Initially a horse farm, the estate now boasts 20 acres of vinifera vines. An inviting tasting room is a former horse stable, and a friendly staff will welcome and introduce our tour guests to an extensive selections of top wines by the glass, bottle or by the flight.

Bowers Harbor Vineyards is nicknamed the "dog winery" and guests might see various dogs at the winery.

Bowers Harbor grows Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The real show stopper is the Pinot Secco (bubbly Pinot Grigio) and a Pinot Secco Rose (Magic Mike's pick).

Explore the mouth of the Cedar River where it meets Lake Leelanau. This is a seldom-visited part of the lake that hosts a variety of wildlife including loons and bald eagles. Experience the best of our area during a wine tasting offered by wine expert Kristy McClellan from Lake District Wine Company aboard The Discovery.

Anyone 21 and over can join Kristy in our "Wines from Around the World and Backyard" discussion and tasting. As we cruise the bay, the beautiful backdrop will serve as the perfect pairing.

Kristy will share samples of wine grown right here in Northern Michigan and compare them with similar wines from other parts of the world. She will guide you through our unique micro-climate.
