OVERVIEW

Today we'll be touring Yellowstone's upper, or northern loop, including visiting the best location in the lower 48 states to see wildlife! There are frequent stops along the way!

Starting in West Yellowstone, we'll travel along the Grand Loop Road until we get to Canyon Village, where we'll head north, climbing up Dunraven Pass towards Mount Washburn. The tour passes through good grizzly bear terrain before stopping at Tower Falls. The Lamar Valley, Yellowstone's prime area for wildlife viewing, is the next major destination, followed by Mammoth Hot Springs. There is almost always an elk herd to be seen at Mammoth, along with the famous terraces and historic Fort Yellowstone.

Roaring Mountain is on the way to Norris Geyser Basin, which is made up of two separate geyser basins and includes the world's highest active geyser.

Time permitting, other locations at which we may stop include Calcite Springs, Undine Falls, and Obsidian Cliff.

Our trained and certified adventure guides will take you on a hiking adventure that will be the highlight of your Yellowstone National Park trip.

We will hike 6-7 miles behind the hills and valleys that the normal park visitor sees. During these hiking trips, you will have the opportunity to see all arrays of wildlife. The possibility of seeing bison, elk, moose, wolves, bears, badgers, coyotes and so much more.

Our guides will give you an in the field educational and interactive trip. Equipped with their field guide and bear spray, they will teach you about the fauna and flora throughout the trek while maintaining the safety of the group.

Front door pickup is included in the price of your tour if you are staying within 2 miles of the West Yellowstone Visitor Information Center. You will be picked up in a Toyota Sienna Mini-van. Please plan to meet us at the West Yellowstone Visitor Information Center if you are staying outside of town (Under Canvas, Island Park, Big Sky, etc). For those that want to maximize your wildlife viewing experience and want to get ahead of the crowds we can start your tour as early as 5am depending on the time of year and your starting location. Just let us know what works best for your family or group.

We do not provide breakfast. Please plan ahead by making coffee in your hotel room/ lobby and pick up some fruit, yogurt, donuts, snacks, etc the night before your tour from a grocery store to eat for breakfast. At 308" tall these falls are 308 feet (94 m) high, or nearly twice as high as Niagara Falls. The volume of water flowing over Lower Yellowstone Falls can vary from 680 cu ft/s (19 m3/s) in the autumn, to 8,400 cu ft/s (240 m3/s) at peak runoff in late springtime.

4: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is the most breathtaking sight inside Yellowstone National Park. Twenty miles long, the canyon is up to 4,000-feet wide and 1,200-feet deep in places. It's located on the eastern side of the park. From several vantage points, you can view Lower Falls plunging steeply into the canyon 308 feet, or the Upper Falls tumbling 109 feet.

We will access an area of the largest geyser basin in the park from an obscure entry point that few people know exist. In this area we will hike to multiple hot springs, geysers, and fumaroles that will get us into a place that's hidden in plain sight and few other tourist ever seem to find. This trail os often our clients favorite part of their tour. Over the years we have received tremendous feedback on this family friendly hike.

10: Grand Prismatic Spring

What Makes the Grand Prismatic so Grand? Grand Prismatic Spring, located in Midway Geyser Basin, has the distinction of being the parks largest hot spring and third largest inn the world. It measures approximately 370 feet (112.8 m) in diameter and is over 121 feet (37 m) deep. A description of this spring by fur trapper Osborne Russell in 1839 also makes it the earliest described thermal feature in Yellowstone that is definitely identifiable

Along this short walk you will see very good examples of most types of thermal features found in Yellowstone. This easy to view waterfall is a must see three step fall! Once called the "Cascade Falls of the East Gardiner," it was renamed to Undine by geologist Arnold Hague. He named it Undine after the wise, female water goddess from German mythology who was said to live around waterfalls and who could gain souls by marrying mortal men. Sound familiar? Think Little Mermaid.

WINTER TOURS - Most of Yellowstone's roads and entrances close to vehicles for the winter. If you are booking a tour with us from November through April, your tour will be in the northern section of the park. It will include wildlife watching in the Lamar Valley, visiting Mammoth Hot Springs, and some hiking or snowshoeing (rentals included) if you like! We will not be able to visit Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, etc, but it is a fantastic way to see the park! If you would like to tour the southern loop in the winter, we recommend booking a snowcoach or snowmobile tour!

Within this geologic system, each type of thermal feature is represented. They can be grouped into two general categoriesthose with a great deal of water (hot springs and geysers) and those with limited water (mudpots and fumaroles). Despite their structural similarities, no two features are exactly alike.

Hayden Valley (Pass by)

Hayden Valley is a large, sub-alpine valley in Yellowstone National Park straddling the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. The valley floor along the river is an ancient lake bed from a time when Yellowstone Lake was much larger.
During the drive through Hayden Valley, you will have the chance to see Bison, Elk, Wolves, Grizzly Bears, River Otters and many other animals.

5: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River expresses the park's complex geologic history in dramatic colors and shapes. Puffs of steam mark hydrothermal features in the canyon's walls. The Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River add to the grandeur of the unique natural treasure.

Yellowstone Lake (Pass by)

Situated at 7,733 feet (2,357 m) above sea level, Yellowstone Lake is the largest high elevation lake (above 7,000 feet / 2,134 m) in North America. It is roughly 20 miles (32.2 km) long and 14 miles (22.5 km) wide, with 141 miles (227 km) of shoreline and a surface area of 132 square miles (342 km2). Yellowstone Lake freezes over completely every winter in late December or early January, with ice thicknesses varying from a few inches to more than two feet. The lake usually thaws in late May or early June. Yellowstone Lake remains cold year-round, with an average water temperature of 41°F (5°C). Because of the extremely cold water, swimming is not recommended. Survival time is estimated to be only 20 to 30 minutes in water at this temperature.

This caldera filled with lava flows over hundreds and thousands of years creating the volcanic plateau that comprises much of the central part of the park.

Here at Mud Volcano you are close to one of the resurgent domes. The hills you see east of here comprise Sour Creek Dome. Resurgent domes are areas of active ground deformation, where the land moves up or down with the fluctuation of the magma chamber below. Scientists monitor these domes closely for information about ongoing volcanic activity.

Not surprisingly, many of the parks geysers, hot springs, mudpots, and fumaroles are also found near or within the caldera.

7: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River expresses the park's complex geologic history in dramatic colors and shapes. Puffs of steam mark hydrothermal features in the canyon's walls. The Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River add to the grandeur of the unique natural treasure.

Hayden Valley (Pass by)

Hayden Valley is a large, sub-alpine valley in Yellowstone National Park straddling the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. The valley floor along the river is an ancient lake bed from a time when Yellowstone Lake was much larger.
