Today we'll be touring Yellowstone's upper, or northern loop, including visiting the best location in the lower 48 states to see wildlife! There are frequent stops along the way!

Starting in West Yellowstone, we'll travel along the Grand Loop Road until we get to Canyon Village, where we'll head north, climbing up Dunraven Pass towards Mount Washburn. The tour passes through good grizzly bear terrain before stopping at Tower Falls. The Lamar Valley, Yellowstone's prime area for wildlife viewing, is the next major destination, followed by Mammoth Hot Springs. There is almost always an elk herd to be seen at Mammoth, along with the famous terraces and historic Fort Yellowstone.

Roaring Mountain is on the way to Norris Geyser Basin, which is made up of two separate geyser basins and includes the world's highest active geyser.

Time permitting, other locations at which we may stop include Calcite Springs, Undine Falls, and Obsidian Cliff.

We have 6am or 7am listed as a suggested pick up time but we can pick up your group at any time that you want. For those that want to maximize your wildlife viewing experience and want to get ahead of the crowds we can start your tour as early as 5am depending on the time of year and your starting location. Just let us know what works best for your family or group.

We do not provide breakfast. Please plan ahead by making coffee in your hotel room/ lobby and pick up some fruit, yogurt, donuts, snacks, etc the night before your tour from a grocery store to eat for breakfast. You are welcome to eat our assortment of healthy snacks for breakfast to keep you full before lunch. We are now providing Starbucks instant coffee if would like coffee on your tour.

4: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is the most breathtaking sight inside Yellowstone National Park. Twenty miles long, the canyon is up to 4,000-feet wide and 1,200-feet deep in places. It's located on the eastern side of the park. From several vantage points, you can view Lower Falls plunging steeply into the canyon 308 feet, or the Upper Falls tumbling 109 feet.

What Makes the Grand Prismatic so Grand? Grand Prismatic Spring, located in Midway Geyser Basin, has the distinction of being the parks largest hot spring and third largest inn the world. A description of this spring by fur trapper Osborne Russell in 1839 also makes it the earliest described thermal feature in Yellowstone that is definitely identifiable

Despite their structural similarities, no two features are exactly alike.

5: Grand Prismatic Spring

Grand Prismatic Spring is located in the Midway Geyser Basin. It has the distinction of being the park's largest hot spring. It measures approximately 370 feet (112.8 m) in diameter and is over 121 feet (37 m ) deep. A description of this spring by fur trapper Osborne Russell in 1839 also makes it the earliest described thermal feature in Yellowstone that is definitely identifiable.

Yellowstone Lake (Pass by)

Situated at 7,733 feet (2,357 m) above sea level, Yellowstone Lake is the largest high elevation lake (above 7,000 feet / 2,134 m) in North America. It is roughly 20 miles (32.2 km) long and 14 miles (22.5 km) wide, with 141 miles (227 km) of shoreline and a surface area of 132 square miles (342 km2). Yellowstone Lake freezes over completely every winter in late December or early January, with ice thicknesses varying from a few inches to more than two feet. The lake usually thaws in late May or early June. Yellowstone Lake remains cold year-round, with an average water temperature of 41°F (5°C). Because of the extremely cold water, swimming is not recommended. Survival time is estimated to be only 20 to 30 minutes in water at this temperature.

6: Yellowstone Geysers - Mud Volcano Area

Yellowstone itself is a volcano, and one of its most spectacular eruptions occurred 640,000 years ago. During the eruption, the land collapsed and left a large depression in the earththe Yellowstone Caldera. This caldera filled with lava flows over hundreds and thousands of years creating the volcanic plateau that comprises much of the central part of the park.

Here at Mud Volcano you are close to one of the resurgent domes. The hills you see east of here comprise Sour Creek Dome. Resurgent domes are areas of active ground deformation, where the land moves up or down with the fluctuation of the magma chamber below. Scientists monitor these domes closely for information about ongoing volcanic activity.

Not surprisingly, many of the parks geysers, hot springs, mudpots, and fumaroles are also found near or within the caldera.

The Artists Paintpots Trail, a 1.1-mile lollipop loop, offers a chance to see some of Yellowstones most famous features in a short period of time. The trail covers a mixture of dirt and boardwalk with 125 feet of elevation gain.

Pickup details

Front-door pickup is included for guests staying within 2 miles of the West Yellowstone Visitor Information Center. If you are staying outside of town (such as Under Canvas, Island Park, Big Sky, Bozeman, etc), please plan to meet your guide in West Yellowstone.

Guests staying inside Yellowstone National Park, in Gardiner, the Tetons, or Jackson may meet us at a central meeting location inside Yellowstone. Please call to inquire.

Your guide will contact you by 7:00 PM the evening before your tour to confirm pickup or meeting details. If you have not heard from your guide by that time, please call or text us to confirm your pickup.

Please remember to dress in layers (hat and sunglasses recommended) and eat breakfast before or bring it with you. Your guide will have drinks and an assortment of healthy snacks to hold you over until lunch if you would like, but please keep in mind that we do not provide breakfast.

Lamar Valley "the Serengeti of North America" is located in the northeastern region of Yellowstone National Park and is well known for its incredible landscape, flora, fauna, and abundance of wildlife. Our safari makes several stops here in search of wildlife. Your guide will educate you on its historical or geological significance.

2: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The canyon is 800 to 1,200 feet deep and 1,500 to 4,000 feet wide. Enjoy the awe-inspiring view of Yellowstone River raging through the canyon and dropping as a 308-foot waterfall.

3: Slough Creek

Slough Creek is a tributary of the Lamar River and originates in the Absaroka Range. The watershed supports a variety of flora and fauna. Our wildlife safari makes multiple stops in the Slough Creek area to track and spot wildlife. Your guide will educate you on its historical or geological significance.

4: Tower Fall

Located in the northeastern part of the Upper Loop near Tower Junction, this fall features a 132 foot drop. The unusual rock columns north of the fall (columnar basalt) were created by lava cracking as it cooled.

5: Mammoth Hot Springs

Mammoth Hot Springs is a collection of thermal features at the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park near Gardiner, MT. It is known for the travertine terraces that form from mineral deposits. The algae living in the pools creates the distinct brownish and reddish colors.

6: Gibbon Falls

Gibbon Falls is a 84 foot high drop of the Gibbon River along the rim of the Yellowstone caldera.

7: Norris Geyser Basin

Here, you can take an amazing walk through the most geothermically active area in Yellowstone. You will have the opportunity to see the famous Steamboat Geyser and the Porcelain Basin Hot Springs. There are a variety of trails here ranging from 0.2 miles to 3 miles.

9: Undine Falls

This easy to view waterfall is a must see three step fall! Once called the "Cascade Falls of the East Gardiner," it was renamed to Undine by geologist Arnold Hague. He named it Undine after the wise, female water goddess from German mythology who was said to live around waterfalls and who could gain souls by marrying mortal men. Sound familiar? Think Little Mermaid.
