HOW TO TIP IN CAYMAN ISLANDS
In the U.S. tipping is customary and expected for everything from lackluster to outstanding service. It is an etiquette which is ingrained in all trades, from wait staff at restaurants to our baristas, valets, cab drivers, porters, and many more trades.
Tipping in the Cayman Islands is pretty standard. More often than not a service charge will already be included in your price. This guide attempts to cover most situations that you, as a tourist, will encounter.
The Cayman Islands use two currencies interchangeably: CI (Cayman Island dollars) and US dollars. The CI is about 20% higher than the US dollar. ATMs dispense both currencies so you can pick up your CI dollars when you are here.
Restaurants and Bars: When should I tip? How much is customary?
A 15 - 20% gratuity is customary, but some restaurants automatically add a tip of at least 15%. It's important to check if a service charge is already included before adding more.
Like restaurants, tax and service are included in the bill. Most people will tip the bar tender and additional $1/drink to get better service.
Hotels often include a service charge. And though you may see a service charge added to your bill, you are still expected to tip. You should tip the bellboy $1-2 per bag and the housekeeper $1-2 per night.
Taxi Drivers: Should I tip?You will agree on the fare when entering the cab, however, you are still expected to tip 10 - 15% on top of this.
Spa: Should I tip?If you receive a spa treatment is it common to leave a small tip of around 15 - 20% of the treatment price.
Final Thoughts:
Be sure to check your bill for service charges. Some establishments add a service charge to the bill when at restaurants, hotels or bars. Be sure to double-check your bill before deciding whether or not to tip.
Tipping is a great way to acknowledge great service. If the service charge is not already added to your bill, then tipping is at your discretion, but will always be appreciated.
