Male is the capital city of the Maldives, it is one of the smallest capital city’s in the world, geographically located in Kaafu Atoll. The central part of the city is formed by the island of Male, five more islands form part of the city including Hulhule, Hulhumale, Vilimale, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi. Boduthakurufaanu Magu is the main street in Male, it runs along the north shore and Jumhooree Maidhaan (Republic Square) sits in the heart, there are quite a few hotels concentrated around here and in the northeastern tip of the island. The “airport hotel” is located on Hulhule Island where the airport sits adjacent. Some of the hotels on Male include The Somerset Hotel, Hotel Jen Male, and Hotel Octave, all offering great accommodations and excellent amenities. Many visitors only spend a night or two in Male, usually in-between transfers to the far-flung resorts of the Maldives. There are some cheaper options for accommodations on Hulhumale the artificial island, where beachfront rooms are available.
