ROATAN - HOTEL ZONES
North Shore/East End
The North Shore, often referred to as the East End, is a stunning and more secluded area of Roatán, perfect for travelers seeking an escape from the busier tourist hubs like West End. Less developed and quieter than other parts of the island, the East End offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. Hidden gems abound here, including beaches like Camp Bay, where the peaceful surroundings provide the perfect setting for relaxation.
This area features a selection of excellent all-inclusive resorts located on beautiful beaches, offering a comfortable base for your stay. However, the East End is not known for walkability, and dining or shopping options are limited. The road infrastructure is less developed, and getting around often requires a 4x4 vehicle or water taxis. Taxis are infrequent and can be expensive, so having a car is highly recommended for convenience. While its remoteness contributes to the area's charm, it’s important to plan ahead to make the most of this beautiful, off-the-beaten-path destination.
South Shore
The South Shore of Roatán offers a peaceful retreat, contrasting with the island’s busier West End and West Bay. This area is characterized by lush greenery, rolling hills, and breathtaking views of the Caribbean. Its laid-back atmosphere and minimal development make it a haven for those seeking tranquility. The coastline features a mix of rocky shores, mangroves, and sandy beaches, creating a rugged and naturally beautiful setting.
As part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the South Shore boasts uncrowded dive sites and exceptional opportunities for snorkeling and diving. The region is also renowned for its mangrove forests, which can be explored by kayak or boat.
The beaches in this area are serene and less crowded, perfect for relaxation. While development is limited, there are a few local restaurants and accommodations. Accessibility can be a challenge, as some areas require a 4x4 vehicle, and water taxis are a common and scenic way to reach the South Shore. This tranquil part of the island is ideal for nature lovers and those looking to unwind in a serene environment.
West Bay
West Bay is the ideal destination for those looking to be in the heart of the action. This vibrant area allows you to walk to a variety of restaurants, bars, and beaches, making it easy to explore without needing a car. Accommodations in West Bay range from luxurious beachfront resorts to boutique hotels and vacation rentals, offering options to suit every traveler.
West Bay Beach is one of the Caribbean’s most breathtaking spots, known for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. The proximity to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef makes it a prime location for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts, with incredible marine life accessible right from the shore.
The area also offers a lively nightlife scene, featuring live music and beachside cocktails that add to its charm. West Bay is well-connected by paved roads and water taxis, making it easy to visit nearby attractions and explore the island.
While West Bay is a lively and popular destination, it can become crowded during peak season, especially on cruise ship days. Early mornings and evenings are great times to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this stunning location.
West End
The West End of Roatan is a long-standing village located on the island’s northwest coast. Known for its vibrant shopping scene, numerous bars, restaurants, and dive shops, it offers a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Compared to the more tourist-heavy West Bay, West End has a laid-back charm with fewer crowds. Nestled in a cove, it’s a favored spot for fishermen launching their boats for a day on the water. It also serves as the hub for Roatan’s water taxi service, with the calm waters providing an overnight docking spot. The water taxi offers a scenic 10-minute ride connecting West End to West Bay. While it has fewer beaches, it remains a prime waterfront destination.
