CLUJ-NAPOCA - NEIGHBORHOODS
City Center
The city center of Cluj-Napoca is a pleasant, busy area of the city where many of the main attractions can be found. Cluj-Napoca is in the heart of Transylvania and offers visitors a great experience to visit multiple museums, historical sites, parks, dining, and shopping opportunities. The city center features some impressive architecture with grand townhouses and historic buildings and beautiful outdoor spaces in the parks and squares. Staying in the center of the city allows visitors good connections with public transportation, dining, cultural activities, and most of the vibrant nightlife options the “student city” is known for. There are plenty of accommodations to choose from including some wonderful hotels set in spectacular preserved buildings. In the city center, you will never be too far away from anything, many tourist attractions are within walking distance. And the public transportation will connect you with neighboring cities and towns.
Outskirts
There are many wonderful neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city with an abundance of accommodation options including a newly opened 5-star hotel. There is something for everyone in the surrounding neighborhoods and excellent public transportation keeps visitors well connected to the city center. Gheorgheni is one of the oldest and greenest neighborhoods in the city, located across the river dating to the early 70s and home to the Iulius Mall and a few of the city’s major markets and filled with playgrounds and parks. The Grigorescu neighborhood is a nice quiet neighborhood close to one of the main streets by the Somes river and the host to many of the city’s events and festivals. Zorilor is the student neighborhood of Cluj with a pretty impressive panorama of the Student Observatory Complex. The beautiful botanical gardens are found here and it offers some of the city’s most renowned hotels as well as shopping opportunities and of course nightlife.
Town Center
Cluj-Napoca’s historic town center with Unirii Square in the heart which is the largest square in the city. There are some great options for places to stay in the town center including Hotel Melody Central which opened in 1890 and has since been a hotel, jazz club, and chapel. St Micheal’s church is the huge gothic building in the center of the square, where other major sights such as Old Banffy Palace where the National Art Museum is now housed, and the old town hall also stand. There are three main squares found in the city center; Mihai Viteazul, Avram Iancu, and Unirii where historic buildings, quaint cafes, and cozy bars are found. The Old Town has the largest variety of accommodations in the city and the most options for lively nightlife with bars, clubs, and terraces.
