    Varanasi is one of the most important religious cities in India, situated on the banks of the Ganges River. It is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also a noted centre for silk weaving and brassware. Old Delhi is dominated by the grand bazaar of Chandni Chowk set inside the ancient walls of the sprawling Red Fort. The most elegant dome of the Taj Mahal rises 80 feet over the building and directly under the dome is the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan's favorite wife, for whom the palace was built. The Agra Fort across the Yamuna River was built by the same Moghul rulers who built the Taj. Other noteworthy buildings are Sawai Jai Singh`s observatory, Jantar Mantar, and the Amer Palace. The Kumbhalgarh Fort is one of the most important forts in this area, and a day trip can be made to Ranakpur where you can visit one of the most impressive Jain temples.
