Danube River

Major Cities
Regensburg has stood on the banks of the Bavarian Danube for about 2000 years. It is known for its well-preserved medieval core. The 12th-century Stone Bridge, a 310m-long icon with 16 arches, crosses the river to the old town. Although obscure for many foreign tourists, its rich history left very well-preserved fingerprints of different historical and architectural eras.
Linz, the capital of Upper Austria and the country`s third largest city after Vienna and Graz, lies in an attractive location on both banks of the River Danube. Famous for its many fine churches, museums, and cultural activities, the city permeates a quaint-yet-happening vibe. Linz has been named the European Capital of Culture and offers a glimpse into the future with a number of museums and performing art venues that highlight cutting edge architecture and the technology of our future world.
Vienna, the largest city and capital of Austria, is unarguably one of the most cultured capital cities in Europe. It`s sophisticated in simplicity and boasts an incredible cultural scene, elegant coffee houses, style, art and some of the most beautiful architecture. Add to this an incredible classical music scene, fabulous food, and tons to see and do, and you`ll be sure to fall in love with The Jewel of the Danube!
Bratislava, located on the Danube River adjacent to the borders of Austria and Hungary, is the capital of Slovakia. The Medieval and Renaissance eras meet the modern age in Bratislava, all while the city is hemmed in by vineyards, forests, and the Little Carpathian Mountains. The most famous attraction is Bratislava Castle, a castle originally built in the 10th century, on top of the highest hill in the city. The pedestrian-only Old Town boasts such points of interest as the Old Town Hall, which is now a history museum, and the Roland Fountain, both found on Main Square.
Gyor, located halfway between Vienna and Budapest, is in fact located at the confluence of three rivers: the Danube, the Raba, and the Rabca. The city was founded by the Celts in the 5th century BCE; it was also a Roman settlement in the province of Pannonia called Arrabona. The Magyars arrived in the year 900 CE. Important sights in the area include the 15th-century Doczy Chapel; the Gothic-Baroque-hybrid Gyor Cathedral; the Museum of Roman Archaeology; and about 12 miles out of town, the Pannonhalma Archabbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Budapest, Hungary`s capital, is two cities in one! Buda is on a hill and is the historical part of the city, and Pest is on a plain, with both sides separated by the Danube River and connected by four magnificent bridges. Among them, perhaps the most famous is the beautiful 19th-century Szechenyi Chain Bridge. With a unique, youthful atmosphere, a world-class classical music scene as well as pulsating nightlife and an exceptionally rich offering of natural thermal baths, Budapest is one of Europe`s most delightful and enjoyable cities.
One of Europe`s oldest cities, Belgrade`s wider city area was the birthplace of the largest prehistoric culture of Europe, the Vinca culture. Nowadays, this city on the Danube is the central economic hub of Serbia, and the capital of Serbian culture, education and science. The city`s main attractions are: Skadarlija, the National Museum and adjacent National Theatre, Zemun, Terazije, Students` Square, the Kalemegdan Fortress, Prince Michael Street, the Parliament, the Temple of Saint Sava, and the Old Palace.
WHY THE DANUBE RIVER?

The Danube River is one of the world`s famous, most scenic, and most important rivers. It flows through ten countries, more than any other river in the world. 1,501 miles of it is navigable, making it the second-longest river in Europe. The Brigach and Breg rivers join to form the Danube at Donaueschingen, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It flows through cities such as Regensburg before the next portion of the river begins in the Bavarian town of Passau. This portion flows through the Austrian cities of Linz and Vienna. The middle portion of the Danube begins around the Austria/Slovakia border, and it flows through the Slovak capital, Bratislava, as well as the Hungarian cities of Gyor and Budapest. The final portion of the Danube flows into Serbia, past the capital, Belgrade, and then through the Iron Gate gorge to Romania, eventually emptying into the Black Sea fifty miles east of the Danube`s largest port, Galati, in the east of the country. Whether you want to see the Danube via train, on your own terms with a self-drive, or as a passenger on one of the popular cruise boats, you are guaranteed an experience you will never forget.
