Gjirokaster stretches upwards on sloping cobblestoned streets with unique stone houses, which look like small fortresses. For that reason, the town is known as 'The City of Stone.' This UNESCO World Heritage listed city features a number of well-preserved Ottoman buildings, but the most important structure is the castle, which is the biggest in Albania. Inside the castle, you can visit the Museum of Weapons, opened in 1971. Weapons from prehistoric times up to World War II are exhibited here, and the National Folk Festival is also held in the castle.
