Tetouan, located in northern Morocco, is one of the Kingdom's two major Mediterranean ports. The "white dove", earning its nickname from all its whitewashed buildings, is located seven miles from the Mediterranean coast, along the Martil River. Believe it or not, the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a showcase of Andalusian and colonial Spanish influence and opulence; in fact, Tetouan was the capital of the Spanish protectorate in Morocco for nearly a century until the country regained its independence in 1956. Due to Tetouan's reputation for high-quality art, ranging from crafts like zellige mosaic tilework to the performing arts such as classical music and folk singing, UNESCO has recognized Tetouan as one of the partner cities in its Creative Cities Network.
