Zakopane, located at the base of the Tatra Mountains in Lesser Poland, is considered 'the winter capital of Poland', due to the numerous ski resorts in the vicinity. The main street, Krupowki Street, runs for three miles through the center of town, and is where many restaurants, bars, and shops are located. In the summertime, visitors to Zakopane can take advantage of the numerous hiking trails that stretch deep into the High Tatras. There are amazing views of the city from the top of Gubalowka Hill, about 3,000 feet above the town; the best way to get to the top is by funicular. Moreover, the unique Goral ethnic group thrives in Zakopane and you will have chances to experience their food and culture during your stay. Keep an eye out for a Goral crafts market each week in the summer.
