Zutphen is a small, but modern city, and one of the typical Dutch Hanseatic towns you will find in the Netherlands. The main sight is the Grote Kerk, or St Walburgis, which dates from the 12th century and contains monuments of the former counts of Zutphen and a modern monument to the Van Heeckeren family. A unique attraction of the city is Librije, a beautifully preserved 16th century library of manuscripts on chain, built on the Walburg Church. Another eye-catching defense is the Berkel Ruin. It has a truly beautiful cityscape with churches, parts of fortifications, stately warehouses, and merchant homes still around to be admired.
