Jelenia Gora is one of the better-known spa towns in Poland, located in the country`s southwest in the Voivodeship of Lower Silesia. Its position near the Karkonosze Mountains means it is not only a great place to stay to experience the Karkonosze National Park, but also the ski resorts on its slopes. Noteworthy sights include the spa district, called Cieplice Slaskie-Zdroj; the 14th-century Basilica of St. Erasmus and St. Pancras, built in the Gothic style; the 17th-century Baroque buildings on the main square; and the grand 18th-century Church of the Feast of the Holy Cross, built on the request of the Emperor of Austria. It is one of a minority of Polish cities and towns that were completely spared from bombing and destruction during World War II.
