Szeged is the largest city on the southern Great Hungarian Plain, and the third-largest city in Hungary. Located on the Tisza River, Szeged has been settled for over 2,000 years, and was believed to be the seat of power of Attila the Hun. It is home to the University of Szeged, the most prestigious Hungarian-language university, whose biological research center was funded in part by UNESCO. Sights in Szeged include Dömötör Tower, the oldest building still standing in town, dating from the 11th century; the iconic Votive Cathedral of Our Lady of Hungary, located right next to the tower, one of the largest Catholic churches in the country; and Szeged Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Hungary outside Budapest.
