Debrecen is the largest city on the northern Great Hungarian Plain, and the second-largest city in Hungary after Budapest. Until the 19th century, it was the largest city in Hungary, and served as the capital of the country during the Revolution of 1848 and in the immediate aftermath. The Reformed Great Church, located between Kossuth tér and Kalvin tér, is the largest Protestant church located in Hungary and was the site where Lajos Kossuth issued the proclamation of Hungarian independence. Debrecen is a hub of commerce, education, and culture, and is home to the University of Debrecen, the largest university in Hungary with over 27,000 students.
