Zagora is an ancient Moroccan frontier city, dating from at least the eleventh century, if not even further back. The Berbers called this area "Tazagort", the twin peaks, referencing Mount Zagora overlooking the city and the Almohad hillside fortress on the mountain. The Saadi dynasty's expedition to Timbuktu started here, and today you can see a sign that says "Timbuktu - 52 Days", as that is how long it takes to make the trip by camel. Within an hour of town, Saharan sand dunes and camel rides are the order of the day at Erg Chigaga. Zagora was a popular stop along this desert route known as the “Salt Trail.” Many a Moroccan Sultan made his wealth from these caravans, which transported dates, silver, gold, slaves, handcrafted works, and, of course, salt.
