About Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic FAQ's

  • The stunning island of the Dominican Republic is known for its breathtaking stretches of sparkling white beaches lapped by gorgeous blue waters and enviable year-round warm temperatures. 25% of the country`s shoreline is filled by preserved national parks, reserves and sanctuaries, providing epic adventures and attractions to explore. This breathtaking beach destination features a mixture of vibrant Spanish and Mexican architecture that appeals to the eye, it is where the fast-paced Merengue originated and the only place in the world where the semi-precious larimar stone, a rare blue pectolite, can only be found, a stunning turquoise color stone which closely resembles the Caribbean Sea (or Mar). Land and Sea adventures are never-ending with hiking up Pico Duarte, white water rafting on the Rio Yaque, birdwatching in Parque Nacional Los Haitises, whale watching in Bahia de Samana and Lago Enriquillo where crocodiles, manatees, and boas can be seen. Baseball is the country`s beloved pastime with over 100 professional Dominica players on American baseball teams. The Dominican flag is the only flag in the world with a Bible on its flag, Oscar de la Renta the famously talented designer was born and raised in the country`s capital, and Puerto Plata features the only cable car system in the Caribbean. Sip on Mama Juana the islands famous aphrodisiac drink and dine on La Bandera and Tostones. The island's luxurious selection of upscale, all-inclusive resorts in stunning surroundings with endless relaxation and entertainment in abundant casinos, and bars.

  • Punta Cana is a stunning resort town boasting miles of pristine beaches, clear waters for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, lavish all-inclusive resorts, and endless hours of relaxation in the tropical climate. The area is known for golfing, sailing, zip-lining, windsurfing, scuba diving, catamaran cruises, party boats, deep-sea fishing, and kayaking. The land excursions include horseback riding, safari tours, and dune buggy riding. La Romana allows visitors soak up the sun, sand, and mesmerizing Caribbean Seas. Home to the sprawling, luxurious, Casa de Campo resort, a favorite among celebrities, and internationally renowned golf courses. An ideal vacation destination in the Dominican Republic with long stretches of picturesque beaches, lush verdant forested interiors and historic attractions such as the 16th century Altos de Chavon. La Romana boasts desirable attractions and endless outdoor activities, and excellent dining options in a tropical paradise. Samana is a spectacular town set on the ancient Samana Peninsula boasting a unique cosmopolitan vibe with stretches of stunning beaches and a marvelous mountain backdrop. Soak up the views of Samana Bay, stroll along the Malecon waterfront promenade, dine at waterfront restaurants and bask on the picture-perfect beaches in this unspoiled tropical oasis. Fall in love with the charming villages like Los Pescadores and spend a night on the town with the area`s happening nightlife.

  • The weather in the Dominican Republic is warm all year round in most of the country, with some varying weather in the mountainous regions always being a little cooler and the inland areas seeing the hottest temperature. It is a great destination to visit throughout the year. The country features three seasons; The wet season and Hurricane season (June-Nov), and the Dry season (Dec-Apr). The best time to visit is between March and May when the weather is warm with highs in the 80s and the coastal beach areas always boast a cooling sea breeze. The spring shoulder season is a great time to go when there are lesser crowds at resorts, beaches, and attractions, there can be short afternoon showers during this time, but they pass quickly and cool things off. Santo Domingo, the country`s capital boasts average daily temperatures that float around 77 degrees in January and go up to about 82 in July.

  • We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

  • The fastest and most efficient way to travel around the Dominican Republic is on one of the country's shuttle flights which connect from Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, La Romana, Samana, and Santiago. The flights operate on demand and may not always offer a regular schedule. Flying from a few airports is also an option in Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo, but can be quite expensive and the trips can be lengthy (20+ hours!).

Renting a car to get around the country is a great option, allowing you to travel at your own pace and explore the great surroundings. Driving is one of the best ways to see the Dominican with plenty of major highways that are easy to navigate. Allow yourself plenty of time to travel around and be careful driving at night, roads tend to be poorly lit and sometimes not in the greatest shape in the countryside. Rental cars are available at major airports and in the main cities in the country.

  • The currency of the Dominican Republic is the Peso (DOP), US dollars are not accepted. There are currency exchange desks at the airport and major banks on the island are open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am until 3:00 pm and some may open on Saturdays. On the major islands, ATMs can be found at the casinos and commercial banks and the port areas.

  • The official language spoken in the Dominican Republic is Spanish, many people speak English especially in the service industry at hotels and restaurants. Most of the island's inhabitants have a good comprehension of the English language. We recommend you get a good English-Spanish guidebook and learn common phrases such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you, and numbers 1-10.
