Torun is one of the two capitals of Kuyavia-Pomerania, along with Bydgoszcz. Founded in the eighth century CE, Torun is one of Poland`s oldest cities. From the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, Torun was one of the most important trading centers in Eastern Europe. There are many types of building styles seen in the beautifully-preserved Old Town, ranging from Gothic to Baroque, reflecting Torun`s rise as a city of commerce. The Medieval portions of the city are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are fortunate enough to have survived the bombing of Poland during World War II. Torun is known for its gingerbread, and today there is a museum which teaches visitors how to make their own gingerbread the way people in Torun have done it for centuries. The astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Torun, and he was baptized at one of the city`s most beautiful buildings, Torun Cathedral, which is home to the largest Medieval-era bell in Europe.
