One of the few German towns that suffered very little damage in World War II, Bambergis located in northern Bavaria, laid out over 7 hills where the Regnitz and Main rivers meet. The Old Town of Bamberg is included in the UNESCO World Heritage, since it has retained intact its medieval look. Its old town preserves structures from the 11th to 19th centuries including the muraled Altes Rathaus (town hall), which occupies an island in the Regnitz reached by arched bridges. The Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral, begun in the 11th century, features 4 towers and numerous stone carvings. Bamberg's architecture styles rang from Romanesque to Gothic, Renaissance to baroque, up to the eclecticism of the 19th century. Take a stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets and admire the ornate mansions and palaces, and the impressive churches.
