South Bend is the cultural capital of northern Indiana and is the fourth-largest city in the state. South Bend thrived as a result of the growth of the Studebaker Corporation, which produced wagons and later automobiles. Today the city has undergone a renewal and is well-known for their museums ranging from everything from Studebaker cars to local artists to civil rights. It is a local hub of higher education as well, as the University of Notre Dame is located just outside the city limits.

There are 15 miles of beaches open to swimming and sunbathing, and the park is home to over 2,300 different species of flora and fauna.
