South Bend is the cultural capital of northern Indiana and is the fourth-largest city in the state. South Bend thrived as a result of the growth of the Studebaker Corporation, which produced wagons and later automobiles. Today the city has undergone a renewal and is well-known for their museums ranging from everything from Studebaker cars to local artists to civil rights. It is a local hub of higher education as well, as the University of Notre Dame is located just outside the city limits.
