Palembang can trace its existence as far back as the 7th-century to the Srivijayan Empire. It is one of the oldest cities in the Malay Archipelago and possibly across South-East Asia and was called the 'Venice of the East' by the Dutch. Modern day Palembang is the capital city of South Sumatra and is the second-largest city on the island, after Sedan. It is also known as Kota Pempek (Pempek City) for its delicacy, pempek (fishcake with sago pearls).
